2025 Skate Canada Practice Reports

Women:

Ami and Sara-Maud working on the 3A, Ami landed at least one good one, Sara-Maud had one that was quite UR.

Yuna Aoki is doing 3?-3 loop combo that looked good.

Isabeau’s jumps looking good, Bradie’s less so.

Maddie and Uliana, mixed success on the jumps

Pairs:

When did Lia and Trennt start doing the Orchid lift?

Deanna is getting down lower to the ice on the FO death spiral, which is good to see. They did their backflip!

3rd Canadian team struggling with jumps and throws, understandable if this is their first outing this season.

Germans did a few solid, well synched jump combos.

Ellie and Danny still biffing the throws, which is too bad as everything else about them is glorious (okay, I’m a little biased).

The Swiss struggled with jumps, they have good speed and lovely amplitude on the twist, I hope they continue to progress next quadrennium. Wish she had better extension of her free leg.

That’s all I’ve got off the top of my head, mostly I’m in no technik as they say on that other skating board. Let me know if any questions, gotta go watch dance now.

We made it to Saskatoon and watched dance and men practice yesterday. Hiwatashi looked very strong. Malinin looked tired but packed plenty of speed. Peeps who say he doesn't have speed should have seen him crossing the rink diagonal in like 3 strokes. Gogolev's jumps looked gorgeous. I love Miura's skating, but his jumps still looked troubled, i am worried. Dance line up is superb, really looking forward to competition. Waiting to see everyone else this morning. The arena is sure on the outskirts, but can't beat a hotel right next to it.

More notes from yesterday, not there today for practices.

Dance:

Piper and Paul’s RD, I’m not feeling it yet, but that could just be lack of familiarity on my part, we’ll see what Saturday brings. The Lithuanians may have got out ahead of them in the sass department.

The top two Canadian teams are both doing FD retreads? In an Olympic year?! Does not fill me with confidence. LaLe make the most of a somewhat tired theme (criticism which also could be leveled at Chock/Bates), I hope it is enough to get them to the Olympics.

Saw three of these teams at 2023 Junior Worlds, huzzah! Lim/Quan are funky and confident. Rock and roll suits the Mrazkovi, they skate right up to the edge, and sometimes right over it, each going down in a splat on separate occasions. Her hair is insane. The young Americans still feel juniorish to me.

Car/Pom are graceful, but didn’t wow. The Lithuanians, who skate so confidently, may overtake them here. I like Bra/Som more than expected, he especially is smooth and enjoyable to watch.

Men (first half only):

Roman landing good 3As, quads not so much. Gogo’s quads mostly looking good, would not be surprised if he is the top Canadian here. Rakic ambitiously working the 3 loop 3 loop combo, but struggles to check out of the second jump, so not there yet.

This could be Kevin, or this could be hell? What’s with the devil horns? Oh, Judas? Practice was a mixed bag, IIRC, suggesting he will either podium or finish 12th.

Tomono I found a bit subdued, was expecting more personality and umph out of him, but may be saving it for the competition.

Oh Kao (another of my 2023 Junior babies). Some lovely jumps, but not a practice that inspires confidence, I'm afraid. I give him (and Kevin) 6-7 out of 10.

I was at practice yesterday and was really bothered by Mrazkov hair. All over the place and so distracting, not cute in the least. I was impressed by Nesset/Markelov, did not expect them to be so good. My hubby thought they were spectacular.

I was a little distracted by Kevin's devil horns, but man, he landed everything! I hope he gets silver. Also thought that Selevko looked good, loved the blond hair. He rocked the Prince tune.

I got there too late to see the women, only saw Isabeau land a few jumps.

As far as the pairs, Minerva and Deanna looked good. Danny O'Shea's ankle seems to have healed, wish Ellie could have landed her throws.

Shocked to find out yesterday- SASKTEL Center does not have WIFI! Make sure you retrieve your tix before you set foot in there!

Went to all the practicex today and adjusted predictions based on what I saw, even though obviously practices are not an indicator.

Today groups looked more shuffled by ranking so to speak.

In pairs, first group with exceptions of L/E looked noticeably weaker than second group. F/M had best jumps, S/D looked more in control with a nice high twist, good landings on throws and sbs. Absolutely loved the look of H/V, both aestetics and the way he handles the partner, in contrast to the Americans. They were not landing much.

In women, Dupuis' short looked great in the first warm up. Shiryaeva has lovely combo, but still lacks speed. I thought Chiba was more convincing as a frontrunner than Nakai, particularly since Nakai popped her 3A attempts except one. Levito looked far better than I remember her, and really delivered charm. Everhardt was nice and light. Tennell appeared basically dated/labored. Gutman didn't fire the audience up as she did in previous year. Other women are hard to specifically say anything about, though Seniyuk looked a bit unsure.

In men, i went from being concerned for Miura to being terrified for Miura. He walked through his warm up after the fall on the first jump, which looked like it put his ankle or whatever out of commission. When Samoilov lands, he has great jumps and his spin with a split looks absolutely gorgeous. The two smaller framed skaters, Hiwatashi and Tomono, look at disadvantage in practice when taller/larger guys warm up with them, but both commanded the rink when they had run throughs. Samoilov and Malinin ran through without jumps, Malinin warmed up methodically, finishing the practice with jumping. It's hard to say if he is injured or cautious. Egadze jumped a storm. Aymoz didn't really stand out except for step sequences with lots of slides. Selevko did large, impressive skating throughout, some cool jumps, some botched. Memola let music and good looks do the job. Looks dramatic and gorgeous when he skates towards audience. Other than that, Moskvina wouldn't have been amiss there to reminded the young men to tack shirts nicely, because there was a fair bit of brightly lit abs.

In dance, I spent most of the first time frustrated with Mrazkovs wrestling the skirt. It tripped her at the start of run through, he had hard time on a spin with it, it covers his face on a lift and their attempts to bunch it togther... particularly with C/B going for the same effect with a simpler and more intriguing skirt (because it has black/red surfaces)... I beg them to ditch the skirt. I adore them and a few times Mrazkov improvised when they had to hug the boards was wonderful. Anyway, I am gonna grind my teeth to dust if they keep persisting. I keep remembering how the skirt nearly cost them the JGPF, and it's the Olympic year...

Anyway, everyone else was, in late Grishin's words, a pure concert. 👌 but from what I had seen in practice, C/B will win in the finals.

Love your detailed reports. You answered my questions without my even having to ask them. Thank you so much!

This morning, I am happy to report that Miura looked far less tentative, landing everything i saw him go for. Hiwatashi skated almost full short in rt, looks confident/strong. Sadovskiy and Memola also looked problem-free, not to jinx. I regretted not putting Hiwatashi into 3rd after Aymoz. I don't think Aymoz is practicing much, but I assume he is ready. Can't really say much about others, including Malinin.

In pairs, Switzerland team's woman partner had a bad fall but no major problems in rt, British team looks a bit under the cloud from yesterday, P/M, SD/D and H/V all had solid rts, with no major mistakes. Music selections were a downer for the most part, save for Polish if you like the Irish stuff. Unlike Everhardt, they smile through it and overall have decent partner connection.

Dance for the second warm up looked phenomenal, i literally can't wait! My biggest concern are Lajoie/Lagha's drab outfits and junior'ish music choice. We missed the first group of dance and women due to need for creature comforts.

Of course, of course, Mrazkova tripped on the skirt. It has gaping holes in the hem, so I guess there is a deduction coming for that too. Argh.

In men's practice, Selevko looked dominant, great, wide, hearty skating. I will work as Peter of Slovakia today, i guess, since i haven't seen Estonia number one fan in the arena. Gogolev didn't do an rt, not sure why, didn't see any bad falls. Malinin maybe looked healthier, did full rt without jumps. Tomono's free doesn't have much impact after Selevko and Miura. Ditto Aymoz. Unfortunately, Miura had the full collection of pops, unsure landings and a fall or two but nothing at least looked heart-stopping. Egadze looked tentative, Samoilov still wear back brace, and i cannot recall anything else of note.
