2026 Canadian Nationals : Women's Long Program

What a competition?
Two French ladies over 166 👏
Two Junior girls over 174 👏

Megan JWC spot waiting for Reese (who usually finds free skates challenging)

Fee Ann 4CC spot waiting for Kaiya free skate

Then, our 180+ four ladies to end the competition. Who will go to Olympics? Who will win Nationals?

What a competition!!

Justine is lovely, but she really does not have the technical content to be popping these jumps. Especially in the context of what we are seeing from Canadian ladies this year. This is a new generation in terms of the attack we are seeing - I've never seen anything like this in women's skating in the 30 plus years I've been watching.

This skate would have been probably top five in most years in the past, but I think this might be the end of the road for Justine...
yup.. we are catching up. Canada is done with focusing on presentation. The kids learn their jumps very early now and that's what we are starting to see. The switch started about 10-12 years ago according to some Quebec commentators (a few years ago Alain Goldberg mentioned that switch and of course was talking about the skaters from a federation we shall not name that our skaters needed to compete with, the change in jumping technique (more calves less thighs) etc) so we are starting to see it in this younger generation.

French ? LOL... They are from Québec ;) not France :)

I don't know - I haven't really seen her have a great competition or skate this season. She's been in tears on multiple occasions, and has had some very very low scores, finishing below skaters who are nowhere near her ability or world ranking. Didn't she finish in like 5th place at her own Nationals or something?
Anna won silver at Nepela Memorial with a 192+ score and scored in the mid to high 170s at her second Challenger (Trialetti Trophy) and both GPs she attended. Things only started falling apart after that, with her having a truly terrible time at the Warsaw Cup and things only got a bit better at Nationals, where she finished 4th.

Either way, this is not really the place to discuss Anna, though she does have something Fee Ann could maybe ask her for advice on how to achieve with monster jumps like theirs - A stable triple-triple (though I do think she too prefers 2A+3T).

Sara got her triple axel and looks happy about that, which is good, because she looked really tense for the first part of warm up. Hopefully that eases her nerves and puts her in a good mindset going into the program.

Also, regardless of who I'd love to see at Jr Worlds, I hope Skate Canada is smart about choosing someone who is consistent in the Short program with a 3Lo because you first have to make it out of a cut-throat SP competition to make the Free at Junior Worlds and reap the rewards of a higher overall scoring potential. 😬

From Skate Ontario, this is what Reese said yesterday:
had fans throwing Reese’s candy on the ice. In fact, her mother didn’t have a name for her and when her brother arrived with a Reese candy bar, Mom thought it would be a great name, and it stuck!

The ladies are much better and getting down in their knees and skating strong edges than the fellas (other than the top ones).
