PS I'd say this is very right moment for change of BVs in favor of non jumping elements. ISU played this game where jumps were everything for a long time and they rather lost than won, maybe it's time to focus on actual skating.
How much were the school figures part of the better quality of skating in the past? I remember Midori Ito really really had a hard time with them and announcers suggested that she'd be way better off moving forward (as someone focused more on jumps and athleticism).

Rather than having them as formal parts of the competition, would be interesting to consider them as certifications or achievements like the martial arts belt systems...

Shaidorov made history with his 3A+EU+4S at worlds 2025 being the only male to ever do it. Today, he is now the first male to do it on Olympic ice. The point score from it gave him a whopping 21.39 on the first element alone today. Part of being a great competitor is rising to the challenge under pressure - he did. Good for him. He won silver at Worlds 2025 because he didn't cave under pressure either. Winning isn't simply what jumps you do on the ice, it is having a superior state of mind.

Congrats to Mikhail.

He started his diatribe with the word, Beijing by name. I was stunned at such a display of poor sportsmanship and the unwillingness to hold himself accountable. I was sympathetic until he blamed "they" for not sending him and clearly saying this would not have happened. Johnny Weir made it perfectly clear what was said which made it even worse. Other people had a rough day today and they didn't blame anyone else,

This was Shaidorov's first OLYG as well. Congrats again to Mikhail.
I was saddened by the Sour Grapes remark in the K and C about this all being USFS's fault. This is not the first time he has blamed the USFS for not sending him to Bejing. I can see a young immature person saying this but he owes the USFS an apology. He is correct in that going to the Olys is not like going to Worlds or any other big comp. The massive size of the event itself can be intimidating but he did OK in the Team event. He just cracked under pressure as we all have at some point in our lives. Ilia, ditch the back flip and the rasberry and the Quad god shirt. Concentrate on realizing you are just another human on this earth...no more...no less... and have fun and skate well.

I don't want figures back, I want non jumping elements of programs to have more BV.
Each fed has own rules for certifications - US and Canada have insane amounts of programs and tests to be even allowed to compete. Mine has 0 tests, when you enter the competition, you declare your level  TBH with like 5 ice rinks operating in the summer for whole country and very limited ice available for FS any system with tests and certifications isn't possible. Martial arts have internatiolnal system of belts and each color of belt is supposed to know the same techniques, but it's much easier to train martial arts than FS because of infrastructure needed.

No as audience i tune in 1. I like figure skating. 2 i am an american. 3. I hope he win. 4. Quads had nothing to do with it.5. He himself gave quadgod title not me. The hype brought on by former OGM like Scott Hamilton, Tara lipinski. And a whole slows of others. He didn't live up to their hype. They didn't want him to. Nbc and sponsor like Honda, and others
I didn’t say you specifically, I meant in general. I’m also talking about one specific skater. His jumps are what he’s known for. The quad axel really put him on the map. Otherwise, he’d be a good or even a great skater, but part of a crowd of the same. These seven-quad and quad axel programs are what he’s known for. He needs to build other aspect of his skating, including artistry. Otherwise, he’ll be (justifiably) written off as a one-trick pony. Mao Asada, for example, could do a triple axel, but had more to her skating than one trick. My comment stands. Also he needs to get rid of the shag hairdo. That went out with the 70s.

You might be right but I always found Nathan to be shy. I think he really liked performing once he got into it. And he did study ballet and did Nutcracker as a kid. I don't think his parents steered him in the wrong direction from his standpoint. He was very fond of this mother and celebrated his gold medal with her. Nathan is just shy.
You may be right. Obviously I don't know Nathan personally. I did think he had a lot of potential as a performer that wasn't always fully realized because of all the focus on the quads, but he was by no means a weak skater or performer.

That moment you realize that at GPF Malinin scored 46.01 for the two second half combos he missed here,
and between the pop, REP, Q and falls he only got 1.89 for those last night.

2 jumping passes ... 44.12 points

(and that's without considering loss in PCS)

I also think Ilia is very capable of more artistically if he applies himself and has some good guidance (Artunian is not the man for this).
This. I think Ilia could be quite an artistic skater. He can be expressive, he isn't gangly anymore, his last spin when he did the raspberry twist entry was super well timed to the music. Not like Takahashi artistic, but more like Yagudin, if he wanted. But instead he likes to chase records and be remembered for his jumps, which is reasonable as well, he cannot do everything at the same time and he's young. That's why I'm not so upset about his programs compared to other quadsters, where you can see there's little potential to improve.
I hope, once he gets older and maybe cannot jump as many quads anymore, he will develope his artistic side.

This isn't the first time? Ugh. I didn't know that. That's even worse, then. There's a sense of entitlement here, evidently. As for the young part, he's the same age as another American who made more Olympic history today: Jordan Stolz. Age 21. Speedskater. I love the guy. Mature. Dedicated. Relentless. He's already won his first two gold medals in two different events and he will go for his third next week. His nickname given to him by skaters in the Netherlands is, "The Jet."

I don't want to hear one more person use Ilia's age for an excuse. Immaturity rings true. And I agree with you, he owes USFS an apology. They were simply following their own criteria for 2022 selection and that should have been the end of the story. Success can be failure turned inside out. I hope Ilia learns that.

I don't think Ilia's 2024 worlds program only worked because of his jumps. I thought the Succession theme and choreo from Shae Lynn Bourne were great and gave a sense/feeling of the show. I would have enjoyed watching that program even if he were just doing triples.

Also, there's also a limited amount of choreography you can do if you're planning 6-7 quad programs, it's physically not possible.

I just re-watched Yuma's FS and I don't see much choreography there either. It's setting up for jumps and jumping for most of the program, which is to be expected when you do a higher number of quads. Then he does an Ina Bauer and a choreo sequence toward the end. It's nothing close to choreo masterpieces like Yagudin 2002, Yuzuru 2012 R&J, or Yuzuru Seimei.

I don't think Ilia owes anyone an apology. It was a heat of a moment super emotional comment. He's allowed to have his own opinion and feelings on being left off the team in 2022. I think a lot of figure skating fans were split by the decision and it's not the only controversial decision that's been made over the years. I do wish to USFS would focus on the younger generation of skaters instead of holding up veterans. (I'm a Jason Brown fan) I think that's why Japan tends to have a stronger crop they support their young up and coming skaters more. If the USFS wants to grow the sport of figure skating in America they need to have a YouTube channel all programs need to be available on the YouTube channel hey charge a monthly fee they probably make more money than peacock. But no one's going to know it exists or care if it's behind a paywall not everybody can afford peacock.

That is super strange how Kagiyama didn't get a single call despite multiple botched landings
Can you stop repeating this fallacy nonstop. It's especially annoying when you self-admittedly only care about skating because of jumps, and yet display no ability to judge them. The rotation of his jumps was fine, so of course he didn't get called on anything. There was nothing to call. Having bad landings is separate from rotation issues.

Gumennik's 4F and 4S jumps had rotation issues.

And it was Shaidorov's first Olympics too - he didn't have prior Olympic experience either
People keep talking about Shaidorov and Shun not having prior Olympic experience but THEY WEREN'T THE OVERWHELMING FAVORITES. There is a massive difference in the pressure that was on them, compared to Ilia.

USFSA absolutely made a mistake not sending Ilia in 2022. We'll never know if it would have changed anything, but there was no good reason to send Jason Brown in 2022. He was not a medal threat and he already had a trip to the Olympics and got a team medal already. Ilia at 2022 Nationals was astonishing and it was stupid to set him aside like they did.

@jenaj The IJS system was designed to have "the second mark" be roughly equal in value to the technical. The way the system was designed has not be properly updated to reflect the growth of technical content. Tons of other things about the system have been mismanaged and abused too, and nobody should accept those problems simply because they happen to exist.

I am a Jason Brown fan. I have never heard him blame anyone for his mistakes. He is not cocky or arrogant, and never was. Even though he is the most artistic male skater ever. Who has not said things that were hurtful when emotionally stressed? When I do, I appologize for them. Ilia is entitled to his opinion that not having the Oly experience denied by the USFS was the cause of his meltdown. That's a cop out. I say someone who is undefeated since 2023, and who won an OGM in the team event has only himself to blame. Or his team for not properly preparing him for an event 100 times bigger than a worlds. I have no blame for him for loosing...I think Scot Hamilton's description of what happened is probably pretty accurate. Could happen to any top skater....but dont blame anyone for your own mistakes....especially a decision, right or wrong, made 4 years ago.

And what can cause a skater with presumably perfect technique with deep, controlled edges to stumble and fall on such a regular basis? I watched Kagiyama since 2018, and he never stopped falling. If that skater also has measurabley and demonstrably lower height of each jump, and doesn't have tall frame that brings instability due to demands on conditioning? Logic dictates that he under-rotates. At the very least, Kagiyama cannot have perfect technique, because a part of perfect technique is a secure landing. Basically, compliments to Kagiyama do not compute, unless he is short on rotation.

...This day is call'd the feast of Crispian.
He that outlives this day, and comes safe home,
Will stand a tip-toe when this day is nam'd,

...But he'll remember, with advantages,
What feats he did that day...

Henry V
Act IV, Scene iii

I was crying, too. And smiling until my face hurt. Those split jumps!
Beautiful! Yes! those splits! Ah, right now it's great to remember something so special!
