A fair way to pick GPF finalists?

That's very interesting Mathman. I would imagine the GPF will be a lot more profitable if Patrick and Max are in the final as they a hugely popular, not just in their home countries but, worldwide. I don't remember the full lineup of Ladies but, IMO, Gracie and Yulia are enough to make me think that a BIG announcement must be coming.
I don't think so cuz Patrick or no Patrick most of the tickets are already sold out.

Similar to the weekly Grand Prix Event predictions ... it'll be interesting to see if anyone correctly predicts the outcome of the ISU decision/ruling (related to the TEB, and the subsequent ranking for the GPF)!!

:yes2: ...anyone care to figure out the 'odds'? hehe

Prediction: Use SP standings as medals and to award GP points.

Reason: it's the simplest solution aside from nullifying the event, and I doubt they'll do that because it's unfair to the skaters and takes several major contenders out of the final (don't they want the best possible competition?).

The Grand Prix final without Patrick, would be our loss. Truly, you want the 'best of the best' competing here, and he is such an amazing skater and arguably the best of his time. Without his presence in the field, while impressive athletes...ho hum. By his participation, he inspires others to go further and brings out their best in skating.

This isn't about ticket sales, this is about TV ratings. Most people in Canada and the US had no plans to fly to Spain. They planned to watch the event on TV. Patrick Chan's Comeback is big news to Everyone in skating. Even in Spain, they all know that for Javi to keep his title, Patrick is someone Javi will need to take down to get there. It would be beneficial for Javi if he were to defeat Patrick at the GPF. I can hear it now...."Javi won because Patrick wasn't there." True or not, it will be the talk of skating until they finally meet at Worlds.

Are you saying that all of last year's figure skating competitions should be negated because Chan took a hiatus?

I don't think short program result is fair because it is not a full competition per the rule book. I think take top 6 from other events. Then give people double the points from the previous event. If you were in first after the short you get 5 additional points second three points and third one extra point. If your point total as as high as sixth place finisher congrats your in too.

Uh, there is another skater who Javi needs to beat other than Patrick, and it is the reigning Olympic champion......Hanyu will be in Spain and won't need any help getting there....

how hard is it?????

who is served by making only the SP results of TEB count towards the GPG????? not the skaters, and certainly not the paying public in Barcelona and not the sponsors onTV broadcasts. What happened in Paris is extraordinary and requires a determination by the ISU to come up with an equitable plan. Cut the damn politics, and come up with something fair and practical - that's what they are paid for .

It's not Elizaveta's or Chan's fault that they did not get to work their way about the short. All other skaters are having their GP destinies decided by full competitions.

The short program is not even a legal competition per the rules. Saying that they are getting some big benefit is unfair. It's like saying we should call a baseball game after the third inning. Or a basketball game after the first quarter. In those cases the game would be rescheduled not counted as an actual game.

For schedule reasons TEB cannot be rescheduled but it is in the sports interest to come up with a solution.

I know that. I thought we were talking about Patrick. I expect Hanyu to Win the event. I thought we were discussing the GPF. Wouldn't Patrick have made the GPF with a Silver Medal in Paris? Same with Max. If they had finished 1 and 2, wouldn't they have BOTH made the GPF? If I'm wrong, I'm sorry.

No, you are not wrong Mr. Rice. Chuckie is just being....chuckie.

I believe Max needed only a bronze and could have jagged it with a fourth and other favourable results, so I assume the same goes for Chan.

Of course, this is now bittersweet - the score Max got for his SP in Tallinn would have had him second at TEB...

To me, that "if" is the whole problem. Yes, if Patrick had rebounded and won TEB he would be headed to the final. If he had sprained his ankle and been forced to withdraw from the LP he would not have made the final. So which of the two imaginary scenarios should the selection precess go with?

In sports, you have to go with what actually happened on the field of play.

Likewise, the argument that the ISU will make more money if Chan, Aaron, Tuktamysheva, Lipnitskia, etc., are there -- to me that's not sport. In U.S. football they don't decide who goes to the Super Bowl by which two teams play in the biggest market.

Except for the fact that Patrick Chan did not get injured. He was ready and willing to skate and the competition was cancelled. There's a huge difference between being injured and having a competition cancelled.

I guarantee you that if a play off game got cancelled in this kind of circumstance. Football would not say to bad so sad. They would find a way to reschedule etc.

Once again a huge difference in my book between an athlete being ready and able to compete and an athlete getting injured.

And I am not concerned just for Chan. Its unfair to any of them that were in position to make the GPF and lost out because of it.

An athlete losing out to due to their own health is part of sport. Injuries happen and taking care of your body is part of it. Having a competition cancelled because terrorists attacked a country is not part of sport.

Of course it is not the fault of any of the skaters that the competition was interrupted by catastrophe beyond the ISU's control. No one is saying it is their fault.

All other skaters are having their GP destinies decided by full competitions.

Of course it would have been better if the TEB skaters had been able to complete the competition. That didn't happen.

The short program is not even a legal competition per the rules.

True, but I think we are (sadly) reduced by circumstances to the position that something is better than nothing.

Saying that they are getting some big benefit is unfair.

No one is saying that anyone is getting a big benefit. What benefit?

Exactly. The game cannot be rescheduled  So we have tp come up with a solution. Here it is: Count the SP only to determine the TEB placements. Not an ideal solution, but the only one based on actual skating not guessing about what might have been. Some people will be pleased (Hubbell and Donohue), some won't (Aaron). But in any case, for better or worse both Hubbell and Donohue and Max Aaron earned their TEB placements on the ice, not on a figure skating forum.

That's my story and I'm sticking with it. ;)

Except, they didn't. If Max was still seventh after the LP I would agree with you. But he wasn't. He was seventh after only one part of the competition, just like he is first after one part of the competition at Tallinn.

I don't think money is the most compelling reason to interpret the rules in a way that don't punish Chan, Liza, and Max for not having the opportunity to skate a LP.

Except for the fact that Patrick Chan did not get injured.

Exactly. Patrick did not get injured, So we cannot pretend that he did.

Similarly, Patrick did not skate a stellar LP and make the Grand Prix Final, so we cannot pretend that he did.

What did happen is that Patrick skated in the short program and got fifth. That is what happened. That is reality. That is the truth.

Since we cannot reschedule, that is all we have to go on. He might make the GP final with a 1st and a 5th, he might not. That's sport. Not ideal, but at least it was decided on the ice and not in our imaginations about what might have been had circumstance been different. It is what it is.

(That's what I think, anyway. ;) )
