A fair way to pick GPF finalists?

I don't think money is the most compelling reason to interpret the rules in a way that don't punish Chan, Liza, and Max for not having the opportunity to skate a LP.

I don't think money is a compelling reason either, but there have been several posts to the effect that the GP Finals need Patrick to create higher television ratings. I do not support that position.

......and Mathman, your story is the right one to stick with! May the powers that be stick with the facts and not pollute them with political shenanigans.

Agreed. There are many potentially fair(ish) ways to decide and I'd hope people don't think it's about money if those three end up in the final.

I think that if Shoma and Jin make the finals it will be sufficient as far as ratings are concerned, plus Yuzu and Javi. The buzz around the first two is quite high at the moment. (for Asian TV) Who can tell if North American audiences will give a hoot one way or another?

I would not mind the field expanded though, to give the benefit of the doubt to those 'on the bubble' of qualifying, but it must also include Murakami if that is the case.

I highly doubt after all this time they are going to just use the SP scores. I have no doubts that the Feds are cutting deals to make special exceptions for certain skaters who for whatever reasons underperformed in the SP. It's only going to water the roots of reputation judging and in my opinion devalues the SP as a whole. Oh well....it's not the first time nor will it be the last that the decisions made aren't based on what went down on the ice.

I hope they come to a decision soon, for the sake of the athletes. Can you imagine having to go skate at CoC this weekend when you have no idea what your results from last weekend mean? When you don't know what your chances are for making the final or what you need to do at this competition to qualify since you don't know what your TEB result is?

I can't decide if the wait for a decision is a good or bad sign. Good because it shows they are taking it seriously, looking at multiple options, etc. Bad because I'm worried what crazy thing they might come up with....:palmf:

Yes. This. All of it.

I just want to get this over with. The poor skaters must be worried sick. :hopelessness:

But doesn't using only the SP results devalue the GP qualification as a whole?

Again: every other skater at every other event had and will have the opportunity to redeem a poor SP. The skaters at TEB didn't. They CAN'T use the SP results as final. It is simply not fair.

Karne, YES, YES, YES. Skaters at the other five events had a chance (for good or ill) to skate two performances. The competitors at TEB did not.. Why is that so hard to understand?

No, it's not fair. The rain falls on the just and the unjust. (No wait -- that IS fair. Never mind. :scratch2: )

I know, right? Even when they are perfectly innocent the ISU will come up with a way to make it seem like they are a bunch of conniving crooks. :)

By the way, if this is really being fought out within the ISU Council, the members for figure skating represent Canada (Vice President), Finland, Japan, USA, and Slovenia. As far as i can see Finland and Slovenia don't have a stake, and Japan should be content to stand pat. By going with "use the SP results" USA will be sacrificing Aaron while benefiting Gracie Gold and Hubbell & Donahue. Now, Hubbell and Donohue have long been USFSA whipping-children (or so it seems ;) ), so they probably don't care about them, but Gracie, yes. So that leaves Canada. :drama:

I still maintain there will be nothing fair about the decision - someone is going to be very unhappy.

To me, one thing that has come out of all this is the question, "why do skating competitions have a long program anyway?" What if there was just one program, winner take all. Yes, if you skated badly in that one program then you lose. But on the other hand, if you skate well in that one program you win. Sort of like a sport. ;)

The advantage would be that the competition would be shorter (duh) and would emphasize great performances like Uno's and not so many falls, like we often see in LPs. All in all,…

They said it would be decided by the end of Wednesday. It's 8 on Wednesday where I am and I'm positive it's now Thursday where this meeting is taking place. And there's been no news or announcements postponing the decision.

What is going on?

Aren't they required to abide by the deadline they set...?

The wheels of justice turn slowly. ;)

Of course, but I would think that deadline was a requirement. It didn't seem like a loose suggestion.

But if they miraculously come up with a solution that pleases everyone (impossible, IMHO), it'll be worth the wait. :)

Exactly. Patrick did not get injured, So we cannot pretend that he did.

Similarly, Patrick did not skate a stellar LP and make the Grand Prix Final, so we cannot pretend that he did.

What did happen is that Patrick skated in the short program and got fifth. That is what happened. That is reality. That is the truth.

Since we cannot reschedule, that is all we have to go on. He might make the GP final with a 1st and a 5th, he might not. That's sport. Not ideal, but at least it was decided on the ice and not in our imaginations about what might have been had circumstance been different. It is what it is.

(That's what I think, anyway. ;) )

There was not enough skating to adequately declare s winner. I think a way must be found to give skaters and not just Patrick the benefit of the doubt. If they expand the GPF no one is penalized.

Here is why I regard that position as a slippery slope. If we declare hat "not enough skating was done to determine a winner," then we are basing our deliberations on the assumption that the event was never held.

In that case, the only way to make sure that no one is penalized is to invite to the GP Final every skater who, if he had won TEB (had it been held), would have qualified. This is equivalent to giving every invited TEB skater 15 points, and then see who qualifies and who doesn't.

I don't think this is a viable solution, but it is the only way to give, not just Patrick but every TEB skate3r the benefit of the doubt.

To me, this conclusion ought to make us go back and reexamine our initial declaration that "not enough skating was done to determine a winner."
