A fair way to pick GPF finalists?

Miki Ando is a chronic lipper. She didn't even attempt any when she won her second world title.

Here is her 2007 Worlds FS where she does four lutzes; be warned, terrible spins and offensive spirals lie ahead:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4RUy4tGtE_k

Ughhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh. I forgot all about that performance. I remember watching that performance and thinking. Her Choreographer needs the boot for giving her all those Flash Hands she kept doing around her face, those Flailing Arms, and the horrible posture she had on that Change of Edge Spiral. Then BOOM. Who's in the Kiss N Cry. Her Slutty Boyfriend Nikolai Morozov!!! :eeking:

I am not certain this will help mrrice's confusion any, but for their reference, the first jump combo is a lutz, the third jump is meant to be a flip, the fourth jump is a lutz, and the sixth jump combo is meant to be a flip.

Also, the super-excited Japanese male commentator is adorable!

Thanks Karne, I loved both commentator's. Can I just say one thing.........I spent six months in Japan and I could never say "Triple" correctly. I still laugh every time I hear it. Can someone spell "triple" the way the Japanese say triple. It's like............Impossible.

It's because of the way their letters break down. They don't have the "tr" or "pl" sound. So, to spell it, it would be tsu-ri-ppu-ru (there is no "tu" sound). I think the commentators had done well to flatten the "tsu" to an approximate "tu". (Hopefully I've got that right - I'm digging into some rusty disused memory here. Hopefully the many Japanese GSers can correct me if wrong, and I apologise for butchering their language ).

Of course, there is an actual word for "triple", as there is for "quadruple" - if you watch a lot of Japanese commentary you will become familiar with "san-kai-ten" (three revolution) and "yon-kai-ten" (four revolution).

NEAT!!!! I'm such a dork but I love that. Thank you so much!! Karne, do you speak Japanese by any chance?

to all of the people who talk about using previous LP scores to add to SP... that's one of the most unfair thing ever...

1) some skaters who did well in the SP may not have had great LPs since they have reached new higher standards (Uno is one example)
2) some skaters didn't skate in previous assignments or previous years (V/T or Chan)
3) a competition is about what happens that day... using scores from other ones is silly... what about the fact that some skaters are sick or injured on a particular competition like Denis Ten was in SA... using his LP from SA is unfair to him as of course, even if he weren't great in his SP in France, it showed a lot more potential than in SA....

this is all non-sense... sorry but the ISU will make a decision and that's it ;)

finally, if one of our favorites is denied GPF... well... MEH

look at Misha GE... he wasn't at TEB because he had VISA issues... thus he only gets one GP assignment... is that fair for #6 in the world? NO.... is it his fault? NO... is there a solution? NO... it just sucks.. that's all...

How would we determine which skaters fall into a gray area and should get GPF spots?
Perhaps those who placed/will place high (first to second/third) at their other event, so realistically would have had a chance to qualify for the Final if they placed highly at TEB as well? That could add people like Aaron, Chan (if he doesn't qualify with the fifth place standing from the SP), probably also Murakami (since two third places would have most likely been insufficient, but he could have placed higher overall if he had skated also the FS) in men, Tuktamysheva in ladies, Tarasova/Morozov and Peng/Zhang (if they place high at their next event) in pairs, as well as Gilles/Poirier and perhaps Stepanova/Bukin (if they win over Hubbell/Donohue and take second place at NHK).

But I think it can't be mandatory that only an exact number of skaters/teams (two, for instance) should be added to each discipline in such case.

Because, what would happen then?

If Chan qualified anyway based on his SC win and the fifth place in the TEB SP, and Kovtun qualified based on the TEB SP placing and his placing at the next event, and also Hanyu, Fernandez, Boyang Jin and Uno (based on his SA result and TEB SP placing) qualified, Aaron and Murakami could be added. In the scenario where Brown qualifies by winning silver at NHK and Kovtun places fourth it could be Hanyu, Fernandez, B.J., Uno, Brown + Kovtun, Chan and still Murakami (as two third places should give priority over Aaron's first and seventh in the TEB SP). That would still leave Aaron out.

From ladies Gold and Tuktamysheva really had a chance for the GPF from the ladies skating at TEB. Murakami would have had a slight chance by winning the event, but she was fourth also at the TEB SP. Gold qualifies for the Final already with the SP placing, so only Tuktamysheva can be added from those who didn't place that well in the TEB SP which would mean that six ladies should qualify from the other events. Those would most likely be Asada, Wagner, Medvedeva and three of Hongo, Radionova, Miahara and Pogorilaya. But what if Radionova places first to third at CoR, Hongo places first to fourth, Pogorilaya places first to second at NHK and Miahara places second to third there? That would be four ladies who would deserve a place at GPF more than Tuktamysheva with her second and fifth place (according to the usual rules). Again, this would leave Tuktamysheva out, otherwise it would be unfair.

In pairs, Yu/Jin with two third places or even a third and fourth would deserve a spot more than Tarasova/Morozov with their second and seventh. So would Scimeca/Knierim with second and fifth/sixth, James/Cipress with the same, Seguin/Bilodeau with what they already have, Stolbova/Klimov with fourth and even third, and so on. I don't have time to write about ice dancers anymore, but I think the gist is clear.

Sorry, I didn't get to read all the comments before mine, so I don't know what other posters have suggested. Perhaps much more precise solutions have been offered.

Who would you pick?

Well, I've never liked Mondays. Any skater born on a Monday is out.

Excessive feathers and/or sequins... out.

Pairs is my least favorite discipline, so they're ALL out.

All the Russians are in; all the Canadians are out. I'm neither Canadian nor Russian, but I love feeding conspiracy theories.

Tie-breakers go the blonde. I'm a gentleman, and I prefer them.

So...

Out on costuming grounds: Mura, G/P
Out on Canadian grounds (besides pairs): Gabby, Kaetlyn, Alaine, Patrick, Nam, W/P, etc.
In on Russian grounds: Yulia, Elena, Liza, Evgenia, Mazim, I/Z, S/K, etc.
In on blonde-tie grounds: Elena, Gracie

That would be...interesting.

Seriously!!!

With Josh out and Plushy getting injured. Patrick is my whole skating life when it comes to the Men. I'll get to the women in a second.

Close, but remember: All pairs are out. Instead, I will accept the pairs medals and prize money for myself.

Also... I'm assuming you've checked, and the rest of the "ins" weren't born on Monday.

I realize both that this was quoted earlier in the thread and that I probably underestimated the total number of qualifiers (maybe more like 11 men and 9 or 10 ladies, but still fine with me):

"Take the top 6 based on results not including TEB. Then look at TEB competitors, and see whether they would have been placed above skater #6 *if they had won TEB*. If yes, add them to the final. If no, do not add them to the final. If that means there are, say, 9 men and 7 or 8 ladies in the final, fine."

I like it because:
a) It's simple
b) It recognizes the fact that anything could have happened in the FS and we will never know what the final placements would have been
c) It both includes some non-TEB skaters who might not otherwise have made it and removes any trace of penalizing the TEB skaters for being at an event that could not be concluded

Gracie and Elena weren't-checked.

Gotta check the rest though...:p

EDIT: Yulia, Evgenia, Liza + Maxim all passed. ;)

I think my criteria would be:

1. Women will be admitted by the quality of either their layback, biellman or their 3-3 (convenient for good 3-3-ers like Gracie and Rika, and good layback-and-biellman-ers like Yulia, Karen and Elena), as those are my three favorite elements.
2. Skaters have to at least have had two GPs, regardless of placement.
3. A "small federation bonus" will be awarded to best breakout skater from a small fed. They will gain alternate status.
4. Comebacking legends? Put 'em in. I wanna see that go down.
5. Anyone I met in an elevator at SA is in: this includes G/P, Yulia, S/K (dancers), and Shoma.
6. Skaters may be rejected or admitted on costuming grounds.

Aaaaand...yeah, that's it. :laugh2:

I'm missing Josh, too. He's a tough luck case.

I'm guessing that Patrick will be in the same boat as Max. Win one GP event, lose out on the GPF at TEB. Patrick did place ahead of Max, though, didn't he? It probably won't be enough.

TontoK, I would seriously skip the Mens event if Patrick, Max and Jason don't make it. I can't see Misha getting in and I think watching the GPF Men would actually make me more depressed than happy. The Gals OTOH are all great!! I don't care who makes it, I'll be watching.

Misha Ge is out.. only 1 GP because of VISA issues...

Only one of JB or PC will make it... JB needs to place 1st or 2nd at NHK to beat Chan... if he doesn't, most likely Chan will be at GPF... if he does, Jason will be at GPF...
Max is way out of contention

it's all simple ;)
