A fair way to pick GPF finalists?

The only reason I keep opening this thread is to see if the ISU has announced anything yet. :bang::hopelessness:

That's what I keep telling myself, but I usually check GS on my phone so it's less obvious. I've kind of just trained myself not to expect anything when I open this thread...doesn't work. :biggrin:

This is always the biggest difficulty with any sort of big decision, that the outcome doesn't exist in a vacuum. We always validate decisions based on whether the outcome makes sense. When COP was in it's initial version, the ISU tested it on previous events and one result was that, under that version, Goebel would have won SLC over Yagudin. So, based on the outcome that the ISU didn't like, the scale was modified. It wasn't that there was anything unfair about the values. It's kind of a similar situation here; we have to look at the result of a proposal to see if it makes sense. This does mean favoritism can have an impact, but not necessarily that it does. Personally, I think any interpretation that leaves a GP winner out of the final deserves extra scrutiny. Not necessarily that it would be unacceptable, but that it is indeed fair.
 
At this point I don't care what the decision is, I just want them to make one! :drama:

If this goes on much longer, the potential qualification of some skaters at Rostelecom might be in question, too.

Unfortunately, at this point I do think it is truly a legitimate possibility that they are deliberately trying to delay the decision till after they see what happens at Rostelecom. If they truly are doing this, I think it is disgraceful.

I agree on both points... that it is disgraceful, but could easily be what they are doing. Sadly they may not even see it that way.... they may think "well may as well wait and see what happens so we can make a more informed decisions"
 
It seems that if they were going to use SP scores, the decision would have been announced already. My guess is that they're trying to find ice time somewhere to hold the LP. Maybe in Barcelona right before the finals . . .

or wait to COR to see who can qualify and who can't...

Gosh, I like the (idealistic) idea of still hosting a long program for TEB, but in Barcelona right before the GPF? Imagine how awful that would feel if you traveled all the way to Barcelona and then didn't make the final?

Yes, knowing the future is always helpful :sarcasm: how about I get to pick my numbers for a lottery ticket after the winning numbers have already been determined? That would really help me to make a more informed decision.

well, its easier for ISU to actually wait for the next TWO GPs. By then, they will have a clear scenery of who is going to GPF from non TEB skaters, and then can decide wisely

Still awful though. If they want to do it, they could have at least said they will just wait for all results to make a decision, that would be more respectful

probably not that different from traveling to NHK and winding up an alternate.
 
I actually quite liked the suggestion of the 75% non-TEB Grand Prix event + 25% TEB weighting.

Seems pretty fair because that's essentially the ratio of a SP+FS vs. just a SP.
