AIN Competitors, Coaches, and ISU Rules

Exactly my point - if we’re considering the music to not be neutral then I’d say that the ROC flag isn’t neutral either.
The ROC flag? It literally has the Russian tricolor on it, just in a different shape

Yea you're totally right, those tri-colours aren't neutral at all. Reading back I am not even sure what I was arguing against, I guess I was talking to chan mostly and quoted you to make a further point or something - IDK! I must be really confused lol.

AIN status should be for athletes like Daria Dalidovich - so that they don't have to seek for another citizenship because they had to flee their countries and were banned by national feds, not for athletes who train with full support from banned countries and will be used for propaganda purposes. IOC messed thoroughly.
Do not discuss this, you won't change my mind.

it was just all speculation from fans.

What we know is that Daniil wasn't allowed to go to Beijing but that doesn't mean that the other coaches like Dudakov or any coaches and personnel from that school are also not going.

I'm pretty certain that she will not be going alone as it is very much unheard of where skaters only list one person as their personnel/ coaching staff and there is always some sort of contingency. In fact ISU discourages skaters to travel and compete to any competition by themselves. I know this as I have been a volunteer to an ISU sanctioned competition and we confirm who attends/ coaches/ responsible person for that athlete as organizers doesn't want to babysit any skaters and essentially acts as their personnel because it is a liability issue.

If its true that none of Petrosyan's coaches and personnel are not allowed to go to Beijing, some sort of arrangement will be done by ISU to not abandon or let that skaters by themselves for the whole tournament. On top of that, the organizer will never allow this. Organizers will most likely group her with the other AINs coaches plus someone from the organizer to watch over her(checking her schedule etc which is usually tasked to the coaches/personnel).
All skaters could only choose one coach to get approved for this competition, so Adeliia will be without an official coach.

However, to expand on your second point, the teams do indeed always have a team leader (usually a federation official), up to two medical staff, and usually a chaperone (Mostly for doping test purposes, often a family member of the skater). From reports, Adeliia is being accompanied by a federation official and a physiotherapist, plus potentially a parent/both parents.

Approved coaches from other federations are also able to act as stand-ins for unaccompanied skaters (seen at many JGPs). As it's being reported that the Georgian federation named Eteri as a coach (For whom, though? Who had to give up their coach for Adeliia to get Eteri there? Or is she there as the team leader and Mariam has to stay home?), she'll be able to be with Adeliia the whole time.

It is rumoured she is listed as coach for georgian pair and already flew to Bejing. This event is turning into shitshow and if it wasn't for a few athletes I really want to support, I wouldn't be even considering watching.

There is no pair going, just the Ice Dance team (I assume that is what you mean), but that's clearly just on paper, as neither of them have anything to do with Eteri and she's not an ice dance coach (she might have been an ice dancer, but there's a reason she didn't coach her own daughter once she stopped doing singles).

Regardless of this situation, I'm not a fan of just anyone being able to be named as a coach. I feel like there should at least be some connection to the skater, as they are there only to support the skater/team they have been listed for, not because the federation pulled some strings.

Yup, my mistake. Or she will join Gubanova's team so that she can be present at women's event. If so, I'm curious if she'll have the audacity to seat with Petrosyan and what will ogranizers do.

Do you know if Eteri coaching the Georgians is a last minute decision because Daniil got rejected for Petrosyan or not? I thought ISU had to approve and vet both the athletes and coaches in advance before getting approved. So how did ISU approved her this fast?

To me, the whole discussion of flags and anthems is theater of the absurd. The entire point of an anthem and a flag is to say, "hooray for my country!" They have no other purpose.

My understanding is Eteri has not been approved as Petroyan's coach. Eteri will not be allowed to sit with her in the K&C, to be involved in her training session etc.
Naturally she is there for a reason and will be giving her support behind the scenes, which is ridiculous but the whole thing is...

As a motorsports fan, that's not the way I look at anthems and flags.

In motorsports, you don't represent a country; you represent a team. (They did have a one-make car racing series from 2005 to 2009 where the drivers were representing their country, called A1 GP. But it didn't catch on. I should add that the final champion was a fellow Ulsterman of mine, Adam Carroll, representing Team Ireland). And the writing and design of the clothing being worn is in the colours of the team and / or their sponsors, not in the colours of the country. So if you didn't already know where somebody was from, you couldn't tell from their apparel.

So, to me, the point of an anthem and flag is to tell people "that's where I'm from!"

Although, that doesn't really work for people from Northern Ireland, as we compete under so many different flags, including our own. (Did you know that athletes from NI have won Olympic / Paralympic 🥇 Gold Medals representing Great Britain, Ireland, Canada, and South Africa?)

All this is why I always prefer to think of skaters primarily representing their club and coaches, rather than their country.

(shrug) Gumennik is going to skate to Onegin, and opera by Tchaikovsky. As Russian a story as ever existed with as Russian a composer as had ever been.
It's not the opera, it's a movie soundtrack if I understand correctly, so if you don't like the music, don't blame Tchaikovsky for it. :) Apparently, he went back to last season's LP, because the new one is crap.

Patriotic index reduction achieved.

the discussion happens exactly because if athletes are independent, they should just not have any flags nor anthem :) It's meaningless to them... and in the previous olympics were athletes were not independent per se, both anthem and flag (though I am silly enough not to have noticed) were closely related to Russia.

So yeah... this is what happens when the IOC should simply ban a country for whatever reason, and doesn't do it properly. They end up with having to make compromises that defeat the entire purpose of the said ban.

For me, it should 100% ban or 0 ban at all. These in between compromises are absurd indeed.
