The doping bans may be over but is Russia done doping?

6 Winter Olympics in a row they have been stripped of a medal. 49 Olympic medals stripped (so far).

The fact that it takes a war to ban these skaters and then they are given consideration still - in the sport where they had a doping infraction leading to another stripped medal. The IOC has no shame, and it is indeed about money.

A bonus gift for hosting the trash that was $$$ochi 2014.
What do you think should happen? Permanent ban forever?

What do you think should happen? Permanent ban forever?

Any athlete caught doping should be banned from the Olympics for life and stripped of any results or medals, from the time of doping onwards (previously earned medals/results stand if there is no proof of doping).

Coaches of such athletes are banned from attending the Olympics after the one in which their doped athlete(s) were sanctioned.

Goes without saying… Ban Russia/Belarus athletes from the Olympics until they are out of Ukraine. Periodt.

Any event where an athlete(s) has been caught doping is limited to a maximum of one entry in the subsequent Olympics. If they are clean before, throughout, and during that subsequent Olympics, that country can go back to earning more than one spot in the Olympics after that.

Any athlete competing in any event where their country has been caught doping in the past (ever) must be subject to mandatory testing prior, during and after the Olympics - not random testing.

And since it has to be said because even common sense fails to prevail - any team where one of the members is sanctioned for doping, the entire team is DQ’ed. Results and medals get reallocated as if those athletes had never competed (other than sports which have heats or prelim rounds that can’t be redone).

A public apology by the doping athlete + their country to the athlete(s)/country(ies) in that particular event.

Finally any AINs from Russia or Belarus who show any support (verbal/social media vid, etc) of the war before, during, or AFTER the 2026 Olympics are subject to having any of their results nullified /medals stripped.

And on that note Sochi was all about Plushenko (hence the mass exodus when he dropped out of the men’s individual), team, and winning in the women’s event (Sotnikova).
To me, at the time it seemed like Sochi was intended to be all about Yulia Lipnitskaia. The Russian Federation was so high on her that they had her skate both segments of the team competition, where she skated great and earned 20 placement points for the Russian team.

When the individual competition began, the bottom dropped out when Lipniskia f;uubed her triple flip, getting essentially a goose egg for the element. They had to switch to pan B. Adelina Sotnikova, skating next to last, did OK. Despite having only a 3T/3T combo compared to 2Lz+3T that most of the other top ladies were presenting, still she did fine on spins and steps (all level 4 with solid GOE) and ended up within a few tenths of Yuna Kim in TES -- and also in PCS, despite Kim's Send in the Clowns masterpiece.

As for Plushenko, he didn't exactly enhance his legacy by forcing his way onto the team, but whatever.

There's a clip of the team event, the Russian team watching Yuzuru's short and it hones right in on Plushenko's face, the 'crap I canNOT beat that' look (mirrored by the whole Russian team, to be fair and he was the first to applaud afterwards, they were not happy). I doubt most in the know at the time were surprised when he withdrew from the individual event, but wonder if there hadn't been a Yuzuru Hanyu whether he might have still gone for it...

Plushie barely beat Kevin Reynolds in the LP of the team event... he was a few tenths ahead with huge PCS compared to Kevin. In the end, he may not even have on the podium if he had skated the men event... even with the mess that happened over there...

When Russian champion Kovtun came in third place among Russians at euros the decision was over! And no one could seriously support sending Kovtun after the total bombing at not only 2013 worlds but then 2014 euros

Because the back injury struck him very badly in that free skate and he doubled 2 or 3 jumps

As Russia is not leaving Crimea the answer is yes!

It happens a lot when injured... skaters can manage a SP but the LPs are another story. My point was more that I do not believe Plushie's decision was simply about Yuzuru... :) He was in bad shape and knew he wouldn't win... and perhaps even podium

Oh agreed that he would not have won and almost certainly - even with the being-Plushenko-at-Sochi bonus - wouldn't have podiumed. I'm saying that being Plushenko (unashamedly one of the biggest egos the sport has known after all) and having beaten Patrick in the short, he may have thought it possible and worth the damage to have a shot that prized second OGM. Hindsight is a wonderful thing, of course.

I could be wrong, we'll never know. But in that clip I mentioned (I saved it yonks ago), even with his ego it's written all over his face what he was thinking.

ps - I looked them up, Plushenko's team total 259.59 was higher than that the 255.10 that got Denis Ten bronze. Of course, no one could predict the general meltdown in the free, so it would have been a ginormous leap of faith on Plushenko's part to think after the team free he could hold up to beat not only Chan but Fernandez and Takahashi as well.

Sorry for stating the obvious:

1. There is such a trifle as the Olympic Charter. It directly states that discrimination against athletes for political reasons or on the basis of citizenship is incompatible with the Olympic principles. Thus, the ISU and the IOC have been directly violating their own basic law for several years now. And, as I see, many people here are completely satisfied with such arbitrariness.

2. In the initial statements of the ISU about the reasons for not allowing Russian figure skaters to participate in international competitions, it was stated that the reason for this ban was concern for the safety of these athletes. As I see, no one remembers this now.

3. The ISU is not an organization authorized to make any political demands on any country.

4. Neither the ISU nor the users of the GS have any rights to demand "correct behavior" from anyone. Attempts to dictate to people who owe you absolutely nothing where to go, where not to go, what to write on social networks, what not to write, what to think and what not to think - this is indescribable impudence. It is very typical that such attempts to shut people's mouths and impose the "only correct" opinion on a political issue that has nothing to do with sports and the ISU are accompanied by high-flown maxims about freedom of speech. You imagine yourselves to be gods, as I see it.

5. Endless false statements about doping have crossed all reasonable limits. Deliberately false statements are constantly repeated, while the facts of doping detection in athletes not associated with Russia are completely ignored.

I did not want to say anything meaningful here about "war and politics", but, as I see, many users consider it entirely acceptable for themselves to publish messages containing political demands on Russia. For some strange reason, these "anti-war" statements always and invariably refer to only one military conflict. This is truly amazing selectivity. No other war has worried the ISU in the past or worries it now. There is only one explanation for such selectivity of reaction - the ISU also became a participant in this war, albeit in a "soft" version.

You are very predictable in such answers. You can't object to anything of substance, but you try to show how much you are above it and make stupid jokes. I once read about such a style of discussion in Herbert Wells, but I never thought that it was so typical for representatives of "Western civilization".

It remains to be hoped that when Galliamov gets it into his head to dictate to you how to dress, what to read and what to think, you will carry out these orders unquestioningly and without any objections. This will be logical - you are not embarrassed by such a dictatorship towards Galliamov.

Dont like it either way!! Not if it’s really about the doping from 2014! Or the doping of one in 2021 or the war now! The failed test was from Russian nationals not Olympics
Yes, that's well known. I didn't say anything about a failed drug test occurring at the Olympics. There clearly was a scandal, though, that erupted at the Olympics due to the earlier failed drug test, which should have resulted in a suspension. Instead, Rusfed blatantly sent an athlete to the 2022 Olympics who had failed a drug test.

Relatively, nobody in Russia will care if Mishima/Galliamov gets gold.
Mishina/Galliamov were submitted by Rusfed, but were not approved as neutral athletes. Thus, they don't have any chance to qualify to compete at the 2026 Olympics. There are certainly Russians who care that M/G were not approved to even have the chance to go to the Olympics. Of course, there are Russians who hoped M/G would qualify for the Olympics and win the OGM in pairs.

Petrosian was approved, so she has a chance to qualify and she will likely make it to the Olympics. I don't find Petrosian's skating that interesting, though she appears to be a good spinner. Her jump positions in the air are inelegant, and she does not have great technique, as we have seen from other Eteri-trained female singles skaters. Petrosian does have quick rotations, aided by pre-rotating. I don't know if any of these drawbacks will make a difference to the international judges. We'll find out. Plus, it will be interesting to see how Petrosian handles international competition.

Who says I was joking? You were doing exactly what you were decrying, which (sorry mods) is more than a little hypocritical.

No one on this board or on social media has the slightest ability or in fact desire to tell Galliamov what to say or how to act, we are not as arrogant or stupid as to think what we as fans think or say has some magical influence on these matters (and to be honest, I wouldn't recognise him if I fell over him in the street). We can however have our own opinions which he doesn't even know or care about (neither does the ISU as I have sourly noted on many occasions) and mine is they should get over themselves. and give over the pity party and faux-righteous outrage over a self-entitled first world problem that they and their fed and their government have been pretty well asking for at the top of their collective voices. For years.

Well Kovtun would have placed higher in the individual event than Plushenko did…

Plushenko didnt even himself compete at Euros to legitimize it, or compete at Worlds to earn the second spot… he just took the one spot - and trashed Kovtun for a poor Euros performance and inexperience to justify himself being sent to Sochi… even though Kovtun beat him fair and square, and soundly, at Nationals.

Yeah, it was all about Lipnitskaia but Sotnikova “saved” the event for Russia. Yes they were happy to win team and pairs but they really wanted a singles gold.

And while I know Plushenko withdrew due to injury, his prior suggestion that another Russian do the individual (before someone clarified the rules to him) showed IMO that he had never intended to do the individual anyways and just wanted to snag an easy team gold to add to his existing collection. The irony is, had he competed in individual with that hot mess of an event he might have actually gotten bronze and the solo medal record first (later tied with Virtue/Moir). But who knows, maybe Hanyu did spook him as well as Reynolds (who should have beaten him in the team FS).

It's tough to assert really. I think that if he had been fit, he would have competed. He managed in the SP but still, that wasn't enough. Both Patrick and Yuzuru had higher PCS and in the LP, it was going to make an even bigger difference. As a matter of fact, people forget how close it ended up being in the end between the top two... despite a hot mess in the LP for both. If I were to rewatch this event, I'd watch Denis Ten's LP and that would be it ;)

My hypothesis was always that he wasn't fit enough and grabbed his gold from the team event and there was no longer any incentive for him to skate the men's event, considering his condition first and foremost. Took part, got his gold, was injured, didn't get better enough to compete, w/d.

I believe that any athlete in good shape would take their chances at home Olympics... especially someone as driven as Plushie. But, indeed, we will never know what went in his head and what that look was about.
