Alena Kostornaia

My ❤️ Goes out to her especially after all she has been through. Had the same injury of the left hand myself recently so I know she has pain as well as disappointment not to mention added difficulty if her right hand is dominant Healing time will depend on whether it is a simple (straight line) or compound. Heal quickly and well Aliona!🦋 As bad as this is we fans are well aware this could have been much much worse.. rest and recover

I am absolutely devastated by this news. Alena is by far my favorite Russian skater in the women’s discipline. She has the whole package: charisma, big, beautiful jumps, dazzling spins and footwork, impeccable skating skills and musicality. Sadly, she also has such unfortunate luck; the pandemic robbed her of her best chance to become a senior World Champion in 2020 and now there is no hope of a 2022 Olympic berth. For this, I am incredibly sad, but I know what is of paramount importance is Alena’s health and safety. This sport can be so unforgiving and tragic at this intense level of competition. No matter what the future holds for Alena, I wish for her health, protection and happiness. I wish her healing, rest and a full and speedy recovery! <3

I had left wrist surgery in 2017 and they put in a titanium plate and I think 8 screws in it. I sure hope Aliona does not need anything like that.

The only upside is that this girl can now rest the rest of this season not deal with the drama and stress coming up at nationals and Europeans it would be immense on her. She has plenty of time to figure out where she wants to be for next season.

The main thing now is for Alionas star to shine for many more years on the ice.

Yours was a serious break indeed!! Let us hope Aliona’s is easier to manage…
Mine was a simple straight line but still took months heal (likely because I am older and we take longer to heal). I hope you are well now and have no residual effects. I commiserate…. My worst fear is that Aliona may try to come back too soon tho I cannot imagine her coaches or parents would allow this. Elite sports are hard on the body, no question. I hope she and her team do the sensible right thing.

I can't believe this is really happening... Someone pinch me! I want to wake up! 😢 On a spiritual note, everything happens for a reason. But whatever the reason is, I really hope she stays strong and determined to carry on and we'll see her skate at the age of 22 or 24 or when she's even older! (Maybe that is the reason why this has happened, who knows... Time will tell.)

But now the most important thing for her is to go back to the health club ASAP! Let's send as much healing energy to our girl as we can!

Had the same thing with my left wrist - bad fall at a high school reunion. Titanium plate with 6 screws however great doctors at Hospital for Special Surgery in NYC. Doctor forbade me any rehab - said I did not need it as he did great work. But than again he is the hand surgeon for the NY Giants football team. 12 years later have never had any adverse affects. Here's hoping Aliona has a speedy and healthy recovery.

A friend of mine once broke their wrist while jogging and tripping on something and also had to wear a cast. One bad fall…
It’s just the timing of this is so maddening. Of course accidents happen, but this one happened at the worst time possible. :(

I can’t imagine how she feels.
It’s a injury which isn’t even that bad in itself, as she will likely easily fully recover soon, but having this kind of a silly accident happen close to nationals must be gut wrenching.
Yes, maybe she didn’t have a rock solid chance, but getting stripped of even trying and giving your best shot, because of a stupid misfortune is making me so heartbroken for her.

I agree fully with Ted. I often try to think that if a certain opportunity didn’t work out, I will later realize that it all was only for the better and a much better opportunity is going to materialize down the road. It’s hard to apply the same thinking to the sport, where each athlete has such limited amount of opportunities and it’s always a race against time and luck, but I really hope Aliona will manage to find stronger motivation to prove all the federation’s „talking heads“ wrong.
As I said many times, she’s more than capable, I know that. And those heads can keep spewing their nonsense, it will not make what they are saying right or correct.

Perhaps this will be a great time to regroup and go into a new season with new goals. Looking at it from another angle, a lot of skaters will be exhausted after the Olympic season is over. Perhaps Aliona will have more time to work more focused on her 3A and maybe try quads.

She’s still one of the most special skaters I’ve seen in a while, my only wish is to see her bright smile, like she does after NYNY performances.

We who have “been there” have a lot in common with Aliona.. hope her injury isn’t as serious. Having a great surgeon is the lion’s share of the battle and, man, you were lucky! I was taken to the ER in terrible pain… I “knew” instinctively it was broken but the intake physician (a man about my age) who I swear needed a corneal transplant said “It’s not broken.. you have a sprain…”🙄 but he asked for x-rays anyway.. even the x-ray tech said it was broken when she took the films but the break was so clean it was indeed hard to tell!! The intake physician later apologized to me..:bang:Guess it comes with living in the country where great healthcare is scarce.. haha

Wishing Aliona an easy and speedy recovery!!

My first thought when I saw the news was -- well, at least I won't have to get up in the middle of the night to watch Russian Nationals! 😅

It's so unfortunate for Aliona to suffer another injury and miss yet another big competition, but honestly my hopes for Aliona to score high enough at Nationals to make the Olympic team died when the Grand Prix Final was canceled... 😭 From my perspective, the only thing that has changed is that now Aliona probably won't even be an alternate for the team, but who really knows? Any of the other girls could still get injured or sick between now and February 3, so I still think anything is possible (though highly unlikely).

For now I'll choose to agree with Alena Leonova:

I wonder how Alena will be selected for further competitions. Usually, for athletes of this level who are in the top, additional control rentals are arranged. The coaching staff will analyze the situation, the results of the skates at the Russian Championship, and see who will get the third ticket to the European Championship. It's too early to say anything, Alena still has some chances for the Olympic Games.

In terms of injuries, I think a fractured hand or wrist is probably the least problematic for a skater (as opposed to a leg/foot/hip injury). Like some of you, I also fractured my wrist, and while it was painful and very inconvenient to have a cast, my wrist was back to normal pretty quickly -- unlike the times when I sprained my ankles. Even with the cast, Aliona can still do stuff like ride a stationary bike to help maintain her stamina, and if she's really careful, she could maybe even do some basic stroking exercises on the ice.

But health is most important, so please just concentrate on making a full recovery, Aliona!!

The post from Kostornaia Team about her injury was the first thing I saw about it, so although I was totally bummed to hear about her injury, I was also really excited to hear that she wants to keep skating for another 4-year cycle!!
I still think a lot will depend on whether Team Tut allows her stay, but I really hope we will get to see her beautiful, expressive skating for another 4 years!

I'll be supporting Aliona no matter what! :hap10:

It's my non-dominant wrist and I guess I got back to like 90%. Aliona as beautiful as she is is a super tough athlete and I guarantee you she will come back too soon rather than too late because it's just the way these athletes are wired. But if the rest of the season is all over for her then why not just wait until the summer to come back at test skates?

Let's hope aliona has a great circle of friends and relatives who can keep her upbeat during these tough times.

What country are you in? Good job on on the man pushing them for an x-ray and I'm sure the Russian doctors will do right by Aliona.
Right as I was about to get knocked out for my surgery the surgeon came in and she talked to me for a minute I thought she looks familiar. It turns out I've seen her at church which is why I recognized her right before she operated on me. It really can be a small world. And her daughter does some figure skating. I actually sometimes talk about figure skating with this doctor when I see her.

I wish we had more information on Aliona's broken hand or wrist so we could figure out the next steps. I can attest that my wrist strength is almost back to normal where it was 4 years ago. I actually fell in a 5K race about six months after my left wrist surgery and no problems with my wrist or hand. My wrist held up but my collarbone did not. And my pinky has been jacked up since then. ;)

If it's one of those situations where it's like a 50/50 situation whether to have surgery or not I would say go ahead with it. But it's up to Aliona and her doctor.

More detail may leak about Aliona’s injury in the coming days; it did not take long before we discovered more about Daria’s hip but we know very little about Sasha’s foot injury.. if Aliona does not put on skates right away, I will wager she gets into the saddle just as soon as she can hold the reins 🥰💙
I choked on my coffee when you asked what country - the good old USA! But am in a part of Connecticut called “the quiet corner” and it is a bit of a drive to a hospital tho Urgent Care is 15 minutes away, the staff quality can be a crap shoot.
Take care of yourself in your next run!!

Given that she has a hand injury, I think it's more likely that she'll be back in skates before she's back in the saddle... ;)

But it does make me wonder... We really know very little about what caused Aliona's injury, and she herself said she couldn't/wouldn't comment on it. I know most people assume that she got injured in training, but it's entirely possible that she got injured elsewhere -- like if she had gone horse riding on her day off and fell...

In fact, since it's our hooligan, I wouldn't be surprised if it turned out that Aliona had been doing something silly like jumping on a bed, or dancing on a table, and accidentally fell off.:palmf:😝

I just really hope that she didn't injure herself because of a 3A attempt. She already has a mental block about that jump -- if it turns out that she broke her hand after falling from a 3A, it's going to be even worse... 😢

At first I was glad to read about 4 years, but now that I think about it, why are they so convinced that she will continue another 4 years? Unless she has a contract when she came back to ET and by obligation she must. Currently she cannot even say anything about her fracture.
