Alena Kostornaia

She smiles a lot, talks a lot about others, it’s not customary with us.

And her outgoing personality is one reason why so many fans love her! (of course in addition to her wonderful skating)

So I don’t understand all this backlash about her personality lately. She’s always been funny/fiery even if she looks like an angel on the ice

I do not understand too. She is better than Alina. Everyone sees it. Therefore. I love Alina but ..

I'm so frustrated guys, about the narrative her being sore loser because she wasn't satisfied with her last skate in Nationals.
We as fans knew that her perfectionist-self isn't news, from when she had the mini breakdown in JGP Ostrava and in NHK & IDF, she always emphasize how she wanted a clean skate regardless of a win or not.

I guess that she's no longer the underdog, now a very serious contender top lady, people scrutinize everything.

(i admit it's partly my fault for engaging with hate in youtube, I can't help it, she really didn't deserve it :noshake:)

I know! It’s very frustrating and so hard to restrain myself and not feed the trolls.

But if any of these detractors took time to read her interview from today, they could see she’s upset not because she didn’t win, but because she didn’t skate her best. And she said the feelings would have been different had she skated her best and ended up with silver or bronze.

I hope she’s able to rest up a bit before her performance at Bolzano Passion Gala in Italy. I noticed her back was taped - don’t want to start any rumors here like last time - so I hope everything is okay with that. She deserves some rest after basically competing every 2/3 weeks since Finlandia!

And she said the feelings would have been different had she skated her best and ended up with silver or bronze.

Exactly! For example it happened in previous Nationals 2019, she looked so happy & relieved she had a clean FS, she was smiling the whole time too knowing she'd be getting a bronze for her mistake in her short.

I almost forgot the show in Italy :dumb: anyone knows if it will be broadcasted somewhere or will it be private just like in japan?

Who says she’s a sore loser and that she was upset? :-/
Some people really need to mind their own business, what the hell?
Aliona was not upset with placements, imo, she looked a little upset with her landings from some of the jumps. I understand her, she did 2 best 3A in her life, and then she did some poor landings, it’s gotta be frustrating! She was about to put a performance of her life, and then came a few upsetting mistakes, which probably upset her, as she wasn’t happy right when she finished, not after the marks.

But she’s also a very emotional girl, she often cries when things don’t work out. I mean...there are people, who just cry easily, my wife cries when she sees some emotional commercials, and mind you she’s way older than Aliona, who’s just a teen. :D
I just think some people can’t hold their tears in, and she’s just a kid, people gotta let her be...

It's on youtube where the translated rusnats press is uploaded, nevermind them I can calm myself now
Ikr? by the way this narrative played it sounds like she was whining kicking around on the podium or something, when actually she just casually answered a question, I had a feeling if Aliona wasn't a teenage girl no one would bat an eyelash about her being emotional and a perfectionist :coffee:

Anyway, Happy New Year to you all ! It's been a great year for Aliona and her fans :luv17:

Alyona's offical FFKKR interview by Olga Yermolina: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_aUEUZAJ4tU

Alena Kostornaya shared her impressions of the past Russian championship, where she became the Silver medalist.

- I'm glad that I was able to qualify for the European Championship. My skating run was not perfect of course, in general, I'll work on my elements.

Overall, in the first half of the season I was glad there were more Gold medals than Silver ones. Of course this is very nice. I will also participate in a show in Italy, after which I will prepare for the European Championship, I guess.

-- This is your third Russian championship. Can you compare where it was most difficult to perform?

- The hardest thing was to perform here. It is not connected with any responsibility, or something was crushing me, neither.

It’s just, firstly, that it’s even later by a week, with each year it's moved a week later, it’s very difficult. Plus, holidays are close, everyone is already so half-relaxed, and you work, work.

And plus, probably, this long flight, longer than at all the other Russian championships. Fatigue builds up. Probably, it was harder here, but the audience supported me. I hope I have not disappointed anyone.

-- What would you wish yourself for the New Year?

- Less upset and more work.

i also don't understand why anyone would question her character when she was upset with how she skated. she knew her mistakes cost her the title, heaven forbid one be upset about that! it's really pathetic these girls aren't allowed to feel or show emotion without being questioned about their motives. she's 16, come on. they are human.

So I'm a bit behind with this thread and the end of Nationals stuff, but I'm slowly catching up. ;)

Um, yes please! Equestrian sports have a far longer window of opportunity for the rider, and it doesn't matter that she's started riding a little later than others - she's got plenty of time to catch up. I know of someone who started riding in her late 50s and went on to win the national endurance championships in her 60s, and I am riding better and more competitively now than I did in my twenties, because my horsemanship has improved. So I would love to see her skate for Russia at the Olympics, and then compete in show jumping or dressage at a later Olympics. (Maybe she can even be a Michael Jung or Ingrid Klimke, and be multi-talented and compete in multiple disciplines at the highest level!)

Yes, it would be really awesome to see Aliona try show jumping or dressage after she retires from figure skating!

In fact, the head of the Equestrian Federation of Russia commented about this!

GoogleTranslate:
The head of the Equestrian Federation of Russia Marina Sechina said that the skater Alena Kostornaya, who is fond of equestrian sports, has talent, and if she wants, she can prove herself well in this sport. This opinion was expressed by Sechin TASS on Sunday.

Earlier, Kostornaya, who became the winner of the Grand Prix finals and the silver medalist of the Russian Figure Skating Championship, said she was seriously interested in horse riding.

"The Equestrian Federation of Russia is a large and friendly family, we are always happy to see new faces on the battlefield and in the stands. We will definitely call Alena to our tournaments, next year the Eurasian Championship will take place in Russia so that she can feel the atmosphere in equestrian competitions "It’s never too late to start dressage, talented people are talented in everything. If Alena succeeds in performing such miracles on ice, she’s sure that in equestrian sport she’ll succeed if she wants to," Sechina said.

That would be awesome if they do invite Aliona to watch their tournaments! :agree: I think she would really enjoy that!
And it sounds like they'd be more than happy to support her if she does decide to pursue dressage or show jumping more seriously! :cool2:

Okay, finally watched Aliona's EX, the medal ceremony, and the FS press conference, and I have thoughts!

1) You can tell how much of a perfectionist that Aliona is by her dissatisfied expression at the end of her EX. It's just an exhibition, and it doesn't count for anything, but she is totally annoyed that she fell on the 3F! So of course she has to do a perfect 3F+1Eu+3S in the gala finale. :agree:

2) Okay, I have serious complaints about the medal ceremony.
First off, I have to say, Aliona's hair at the last two Nationals medal ceremonies have been a disappointment! Last year she had those two braids, which I didn't care for (looked a bit childish), and this year she had a messy half ponytail. :disapp: Oh yes, this is definitely a very superficial complaint, but since Aliona is such a gorgeous girl, it annoys me when her hair is not as nice as it could be--like when she had it completely down at the NHK Trophy gala :luv17: or at the 2018 JGPF medal ceremony where she seriously looked like a princess/real-life Juliet!
Second, why the heck did they choose to show her 3F+3T combo that she messed up instead of one of her gorgeous 3As?
Third, I'm very disappointed that they didn't show the girls hugging each other, because that's always one of my favorite parts. Hmmph!

3) In the press conference, Aliona was looking still a bit depressed and subdued, but I totally  when Aliona insisted on answering the question on the doping scandal that Anna and Sasha didn't want to answer:

Yes, that is our little daring devil!

I think all the talk of her getting a quad are a bit premature...

They would be wise to wait, at least until after Worlds to begin seriously working on any potential quads. I have no doubts that she can do quads. I just don’t think they are necessary...yet. Her consistency at performing all of her content perfectly is her greatest strength, and trying to add a new difficult element midseason might throw her off her game. She can go for an easier upgrade instead, like maybe doing 3Lz-3T, and just focus on executing everything flawlessly.

OMG! Now i'm excited to see if Aliona would really be invited to the equestrian championship in Moscow :hap57: and it will be in off-season too!

Imagine, about a month ago, I totally would have agreed with you about the quads. I still am very worried about Aliona working on quads and potentially getting injured or ruining her consistency on the rest of her elements. :drama:

However, the fact that Daniil said that Aliona wanted to try a quad at Nationals suggests to me that her quad is pretty much ready to go, which means that she has been working on it already, anyway. Though I'm still confused about this comment, because in her interview, Aliona made it seem like she hasn't fully rotated a 4S yet. I do think Aliona is aware that her consistency is her strength, though--or at least the coaches are aware--so I'm sure they won't let her try a quad in competition until it's almost perfect.

I agree with you that it's probably not necessary at this point if her goal is to win the Olympics, but I do think that Aliona wants to increase her base value now so that 1) she'll have a good chance to win even if others skate cleanly and 2) she can have a small margin of error to make small mistakes.

One thing I think Aliona absolutely needs to work on, though, before she can add a quad in competition, is being able to warm up her difficult elements quickly. We have seen how she needs to wait (or she prefers to wait) until the entire rink is practically clear so that she can do a 3A attempt, and she often has to abort her attempts if other skaters get in her way. She's probably not going to have enough time to try to do that for a 3A AND a separate quad in the 6-minute warmup, so she needs to find a more efficient way to warm up her 3A and a quad, in my opinion.

So today is the birthday of Aliona's bestie, Dasha Pavliuchenko! Aliona wished her happy birthday in her Instagram story! :luv17:
I'm sure they will celebrate her birthday together, surely by getting into all sorts of trouble. ;)

Did you see their adorable pictures together at the gala finale?

Also, they went to the premiere of the film about Elena Tchaikovskaia together (a few weeks ago)! Here is a photo of them with her:

They are both kind of smirking like they got caught doing something naughty!

And here's a very tiny clip of them at the premiere (with Aliona talking):

I'm so very glad that Aliona has such a fun and supportive bestie!!
And I have to say, I'm so glad that Dasha & Denis made it to the Euros team! I feel like Aliona feels better when Dasha is with her at competitions! And I hope they go to Worlds together too!

I am pretty certain Alyona and Dar'ya rely on each other for emotional support when things get a little difficult. It was Dar'ya who lifted Alyona's spirits after Test Skates and suggested she'd try learning a new element after all.
Dar'ya has a male partner in Denis but probably values Alyona's friendship equally.

Having a friend close, but not on the same rink, makes the bond strong: https://pbs.twimg.com/media/EM854YAWsAEAZV5?format=jpg&name=900x900 , BFF's :-)

Has anyone heard if there will be a stream or videos from the Bolzano Passion Gala Aliona is performing in on the 4th? I’ve been searching but haven’t been able to find anything yet.
