Andrew Torgashev

I have loved Andrew's L'Enfer ever since the rough outing at Skate America. He scored in the 60s but I said, "Oh my gosh, the program is amazing." He has gone on to skate it cleanly many times, which I am so happy about. Right now, I'm going to make a bold statement: Legacy on Ice is my favorite of all of Andrew's L'Enfers! We have Worlds to go, and I hope he has another clean SP in store, but it won't be like it was at Legacy on Ice.

I never imagined that Andrew's L'Enfer could be like this or that it could feel like this!!! Never has Andrew skated L'Enfer closer to the spirit of the lyrics, in my opinion. I could feel the pain. Andrew found extra seconds in the music to extend his arm more or extend his free leg more, to pause in newly expressive ways, even though I've seen the choreography so many times. It was different this time; it felt fresh, like I was seeing it for the first time. The obvious answer is, "Oh, it was a gala with no judges, he did two triples and a double axel and no combos so of course it was different." But that's not it.

I've always felt emotion from Andrew in this program, but his emotion in this particular performance was on another level. Andrew took extra care in every moment of this performance. Through the masterful camerawork of Jordan Cowan and by having no commentary at all, I could experience every little detail. It was amazing.

And then, Andrew's tears. After L'Enfer at competitions, he stands there calm and collected for a long few moments in his strong ending position. (I've never timed how long, but I admire that he stays in character). At Legacy on Ice, he hit the ending position and instantly the tears started forming for him, he didn't stand still for long, then the camera pulled out, and the next time it went in, he had tears streaming down his face as he took his bows and thanked the crowd. He even looked like he was about to cry before he placed his white rose.

The crowd's applause seemed more an embrace than cheering (okay, maybe I'm getting too poetic there). It didn't break the spell that Andrew had cast. It didn't take me out of the moment of profundity at all. The crowd was like that for all the skaters, for the whole 2+ hours. It was incredible.

On his IG stories after, Andrew wrote this:

Thank you to all of my friends that were here for this show.
This has been the most meaningful performance of my time on ice.
Thank you so much to all that watched.
The love and support that was felt tonight cannot be expressed in words.
Just thank you to all.

Thank you, Andrew, thank you. His second sentence says it all, doesn't it? All the sentences, really. How beautifully and profoundly simple his words are.

The reason it took me so many days to get to posting anything in this thread is (1) real life, and (2) I was busy posting in the main LOI thread. I downloaded the whole stream from Peacock and later made a table with the start times of all the performances. I knew I wanted to keep all the performances, so I did not go through the work of extracting any programs individually.

"L'Enfer" starts at 1:42:18.

In addition to L'Enfer, Andrew was part of the enormous Imagine group number and the moment of silence that followed. I didn't spot him on first watch because there were so many skaters on the ice. He wore a blue shirt and black pants. He was part of a quartet of double axels. The skaters finished Imagine in a tight circle, with their arms around each others' shoulders, and then they all went to one knee and lifted both arms up and out. We see Andrew kneeling next to Madison Chock and he has an arm underneath hers.

"Imagine" starts at 38:00

And of course, Andrew was in the Finale, which starts at 2:16:27. He's not heavily featured, but I could watch him skate around the rink all day.

Thanks for posting this. The camerawork is quite exceptional. Also, I have to bring up the lighting of not only Andrew's performance, but the ice and the entire arena. This is not what you usually see at an ice show or gala. I do not like a pitch-black arena with one narrow spotlight on a skater. Thanks, again!

Wassup Team Torgs!
Or Torgies? Torgashites lol? Torgashians?

Anyway checking in to see if anyone else is watching his group practice on USFS YouTube. He will be doing a run through last in this group. So excited! According to Jackie Wong, Raf is in Boston, first comp he is attending in years. I'll look around to see if he's at practice, and of course see how Andrew is doing, if he even does much on camera. At Nationals, he did only triples and not Quads for the FS run through. I'm curious to see if he had changed his layout at all since Nats... Like do a 4S instead of the 3Loop? Might be wishful thinking though.

ETA looks like only him and 1 other guy in their practice session, so really easy to see him! He's done a bunch of 3flips and his 3z eu 3S combo

Almost all the men are marking their programs to some extent, so I wouldn't have expected Andrew to do much more than he did. He had a long flight and we don't know when he arrived.

The next practice is 10:30 pm, which may be to his advantage if he is still on West Coast time. :)

Even his jumps that look off seem landable these days. They didn't used to be that way. Well done, Andrew! He actually didn't mark as much as I thought he would. He looked tired at the end but that's understandable. Same jump layout as Nationals. Hopefully no pops in the competition! I am so excited for his 2nd Worlds, which, fingers crossed, will go much better than 2023. Here we go!!!

I was pretty surprised he didn't do any marking in his FS run through, but he was definitely looking winded at the end, only doing a 2s after the 3z and pretty much ended the program after that last 3flip. I don't think he is favoring his back, as was a comment of another site, just think he was sucking wind. Was glad to see that he didn't combo that flip, the 4T combo should still be second jumping pass, even though he didn't do that here.

After, he did another 3a, 2T, 4T(fall), 4T, and then a couple of 3F-3T combos so looks like that will still be his combo in the SP.

Was nice to see Raf, he looks good and had a very positive energy even though Andrew was struggling a bit with his 4T timing this session. I do hope that Brandon will be there as well, he seems quite calming on Andrew during the competitions if this season is any indication.

Andrew just did a very nice SP runthrough at practice. Watched it on Peacock. Landed 4T, 3A and solo 3F. Marked the last 2 spins. Did most of his StSeq expect the slide. Looks like he has more energy than yesterday, although yesterday he did the LP which is more tiring to begin with. Andrew's focus better be good tomorrow because the crowd will probably be very loud for him as a US skater, if today's segments are any indication. I am not worried but anything can happen. In Andrew I trust, especially this season. 🤞

There are 7 Warmup Groups tomorrow. Andrew is 2nd to skate in Group 5. He'll skate at 2:30pm Eastern, give or take a few minutes. Someone asked in the pregame chat thread how people handle nerves when our favorites skate. I wrote that I usually check the results first. But, would you believe it, I'm typing this during a pairs SP resurface, happening live! I suppose I only get outright nervous for Women and Men, then. I turned the pairs SP stream on just in time to hear the enormous roar as Alisa & Misha took the ice, and they are still sitting in 2nd.

He looked much more confident/energetic this evening. I noticed it right away. I think Raf being there with him is great and will help. ( I never thought he'd travel again, but he did.)

My adrenaline!!

Completely pumped, so glad that he got all his levels and only had slight negative GOE on the quad. A PB short program score at Worlds!! So so happy he kept his nerve and really gave what he could into the choreo and stayed in the moment. So proud of Torgs!

Andrew got 87!!! He is ahead of Jason who got 84. ANDREW DID IT!!! :cheer2: The crowd was amazingly supportive. What a sendoff for Andrew's L'Enfer!!! Landed the quad with the slightest touch down of his free foot, GORGEOUS 3A, GORGEOUS 3F+3T. Andrew being Andrew as far as the spins and StSeq. Remember ONLY TWO SEASONS AGO when he was way down in 22nd after the Short?!?! He's a new and improved skater this time. Oh, I am so happy!!! :hap10:  :dance3:  KMT loves his StSeq. Who doesn't, though? Seriously. Great job today, Andrew!!!!!
