BBC Documentary Ice Stars Airing again UK

Oh thank you, thank you CaroLiza_fan for the updates! I'm a huge Team Jellie fan. I forget how I stumbled across them now, but I'm a fan on fb and have been wishing I could watch the show clips with them in it. Reading the recaps is almost as good as watching though. They're SO cute and while of course I don't really wish the time away, I wish they'd hurry and grow grow grow so I can be their biggest fan at their hopefully soon-to-come jgp assignments in the next year or two! Go Team Jellie!!

As an aside, do you have an idea how hard it is to find and compare novice scores online?? Argh! It's really hard to track teams not in the ISU database yet! I wish that weren't so. :bang: :bang:

For older scores, up to the end of the 2013-14 season, quite a few novice competition results can be found at

http://tracings.net/

For ISU and National championship competitions, check out GS's files.

And statsonice has some novice results

Plus in the US, novice results are included in icenetwork bios (not always for their bios of non- US skaters.

Check Courtney Hicks' bio for an example. Data on Juvenile and intermediate results are included.

You know, I was going to wait until the series was over to post these to this thread. But, since you have written such a glowing reference for them, I think I'd better let the wider public see them in action now:

2014 NRW Trophy Free Dance
2014 NRW Trophy Pattern Dance (American Waltz)
2014 NRW Trophy Pattern Dance (Foxtrot)

Those videos are from last season. But, Ellie's Mum has let me know that, a few weeks ago, they performed their FD for this season at a charity gala. Now, she admitted herself, it isn't a great performance. But hopefully it should get polished up in time for Nationals

Best of British Gala 2015

Thank you for the heads up, tiffoc! :points:

Regarding finding novice level results, tell me about it! :rolleye:

When I was doing the Fan Fests over the summer, Tracings.net was definitely the best place for finding earlier results, as Melanie has put all the results she can find for a particular skater into an easy to read table.

But, that is assuming that the skaters you are looking for have been put into the database! When I came to do Team Cyprus, only Kristina Dubrovskaya had a Tracings Bio. So, the next best place to go is Stats On Ice.

Stats On Ice is good in that, rather than putting in the data by skater, Curran has put in the data by competition. So, you get the results from all the levels.

However, the problems can arise when there are descrepencies with how the names of skaters were written on the original Entries/Results pages. So, you can end up with the same skater having multiple profiles, each of which is incomplete. And that is what has happened with Ellie. :rolleye:

Josh and Ellie do not have a Tracings Bio yet. However, here are their Stats On Ice Bios:

As you may have noticed, so far in this thread I have been following the BBC's lead in not mentioning any surnames. But, I have had a chat with Ellie's Mum, and she doesn't mind their full names being revealed on here. And that is why I am now able to post these links.

So, thank you again, tiffoc!

Awww!!! Thank you for the compliments about the episode reviews. :o:

If I am totally honest, I don’t actually like doing them as detailed as I have been. I would prefer to leave an air of intrigue, so that people go and watch the episodes themselves. But, because only 2 episodes have appeared on YouTube, I feel that it is better to go really detailed, so that those members who cannot access iPlayer do not feel like they are missing out.

Now that I have (finally!) finished watching the Ladies FS from Austria, I am going to go watch last week's episode now. So, all being well, the review should be up by dinner time.

You know how I said that Episode 4 was “the most interesting episode of the series so far”. Well, Episode 5 was very interesting as well!

Episode 5 – Sweet Sixteen

Although we had three disciplines dealt with in this episode, we actually had four strands rather than three. Two Single skating strands, a Speed Skating strand, and an Ice Dance strand.

The first strand was Josh B and Kloe. Or, as Katie Thistleton referred to them in the preview an hour before the episode was broadcast, “those lovebirds”!

If any of us had any doubts about shipping them, then they were quickly dispelled. The programme started with the clip that was showed last time where Josh B was saying that he wouldn’t know what to do without her. But, this time they extended it, and showed even more of him gushing about her!

Anyway, it was Kloe’s 16th birthday. And they showed some of Josh B and Kloe’s ballet class. As it was Kloe’s birthday, a lot of the other skaters there had got her presents. And then they started in. I’ll be honest, I wish they showed even more of the class, because it would have been very interesting to see just what the skaters do. But, it was only shown to introduce the setting for Josh B’s surprise for Kloe.

This was the clip that was shown in the preview.

After the class, Josh B hijacked Kloe, and gave her this envelope and told her to open it. And in it was this letter. Here is how it started:

“SURPRISE!!!

Because you mean absolutely everything to me, I wanted to make your sweet 16th the most amazing it could ever be…”

Anyway, the gist of it was that Josh B had arranged for them to have a trip to London the following day. And such an amount of excitement and hugging this produced…

“Oh Josh, you’re so cute!”

Thank goodness we then went to the next strand, speed skating!

We were introduced to 16 year old Izzy. She has been skating since she was 6, and I like the way she explained why she chose speed skating over ice hockey or figure skating:

“it’s different, it’s quite a weird sport, but I kinda like that. No-one knows what it is” [laughs]

Yep. She described it down to a “T”!

Anyway, Izzy is a 2-time British Champion (she didn’t say what age level, though), and made the “Star Class Finals”, which she says is like the European Championships. And because she had been doing so well, she was selected to train with the Olympic squad. And that session was the main focus of her strand in this episode.

But first, she did a very interesting technical feature. First, she showed us what speed skating blades were like. We were told that Izzy had just had a bad season, but that she had now got a new set of blades (Elise Christie’s old blades, no less!), and things had improved massively. She also showed us the protective layer she wears under her costume, and then the costume itself. It was really funny when she said:

“So with figure skating, things like that, obviously you’ve got these really nice dresses on and, erm, you make yourself look really nice. Er, speed skating, that doesn’t matter as much. Er, we do look a bit silly. Erm, it’s kinda funny telling my friends what I wear. At the end of the day, you’re not there to look good. You’re there to win”

I like this girl already! ;)

Anyway, she found the warm-up before the session really tough, because it was a lot longer than the 20 minutes warm-up she normally does. And the she found the same with the first half of the session. The second part of the session was a 20-minute team relay.

But, despite it tiring her out, everybody was impressed with Izzy.

After the session, we were told that Izzy was going to an “international competition in Munich”. Now, unlike with the singles skaters at the “international competition in Luxembourg”, the cameras did not go with her. So, we were told later in the episode how she got on.

Next, it was to our second Singles skating strand. We were introduced to another 16 year old, Emma. And then she introduced us to umpteen relatives who also skated. And there was a very familiar face amongst them…

Do you remember during “Ice Rink On The Estate”, I commented that there was a wee fella who was obviously a very experienced skater, but they never featured him. And after a bit of investigating (see this comment), I found out that he was called Jamie Tsang, and that he was already on the competition circuit.

Well, I spotted Jamie in the background of a shot in one of the early episodes of “Ice Stars”. And now he was properly introduced to us as one of Emma’s cousins.

Anyway, Emma’s Dad was a pretty good skater, and it was him that got her into it. And now her sister, Sarah, is following her into the sport.

But, the main focus of the strand was on how Emma was helping out her twin cousins, Ryan and Jessica.

First, we saw Emma coaching them. Ryan asked for help with his axels. Emma got him to do one, and although it was technically alright, it was VERY slow. So, she told him to try doing it faster, and did a demonstration. Suffice to say, it was a lot more impressive! Anyway, Ryan continued trying, and each time Emma would give him some advice, and I was thinking “she is going to make a good coach some day”. It was noticeable that they were not showing Jessica. But, at the very end of this section they did finally show her, and we found out why. She was nearly as good as Emma!

Afterwards, Emma was talking to camera, and admitted that she hadn’t realised that the twins were that good. They then went to Jessica, who talked about the benefits of having a relative who skated at a higher level, and about all the good advice and help that Emma could give to them.

Next, it was back to the lovebirds. Now, I don’t know how much of a romantic trip they managed to get, because they had another skater with them, a girl called Sasha! Anyway, they went to the observation floor of the Shard (the tallest building in Europe). And Kloe couldn’t get over how high they were, or how big London was.

They then went for a meal. Josh B commented that as she was now 16, Kloe was old enough to buy a Lottery ticket. So, this sparked a discussion of what they would do if they won the Lottery. And, amongst the normal things like going on holidays, and getting Selena Gomez to sing for her, Kloe said she would buy an ice rink.

Then a wee cupcake arrived with a candle on it, and Josh B said to make a wish. And then added “to win the Lottery”! At the end of this section, Kloe said that this was genuinely the best birthday she had ever had.

They weren’t the only skaters having a meal. Back in Nottingham, Jessica and her relatives were having a family meal at their Chinese restaurant. While the kids were talking skating, Emma’s Mum (Mai) was doing a piece to camera. And she pointed out that whilst it was nice that all the kids had something in common, they weren’t getting out to see their friends as much as other kids. And that it was particularly hard on Emma, as she is a teenager and teenagers do sleepovers and things. But, when they went to Emma, she didn’t seem that bothered!

Back to speed skating, and Izzy was back from Munich. She finished 6th out of “about 30”, and set new SB’s which were not far off her PB’s. And so impressed were the Team GB coaches that she was under consideration for a scheme for future Olympians. But, it would mean leaving home.

Then the narrator told us that we would be returning to her later in the series. Thanks a lot! Build up a story, and then tell us you’re leaving it until later in the series!

Back to the skating family, and Emma and Jessica were talking dresses. This was actually very interesting. We saw Emma bring all her old dresses down the stairs, and there were LOTS of them! The narrator explained that figure skating dresses were very expensive – “brand new ones can cost hundreds of pounds, and Olympic dresses thousands”!!! :jaw: (Erm, maybe I’m a thick bloke, but what’s the difference with an “Olympic dress”?!) With Emma having so many dresses, the plan is for her to pass her old dresses onto Jessica as she grows.

So, Jessica lifted this purple one that she liked, and went to try it on. And I was thinking “there is no way that is going to fit you. It is far too small!” But, when she came back, although it looked skimpy enough, it did fit. And Emma got Jessica to stretch out in different directions to make sure she could still move, and much to my surprise, she could!

Finally, 5 minutes before the end of the episode, we reached the final strand – Ice Dancing. We were back with Chloe, Lauren and Kershia, who were all without partners. Ice Partner Search didn’t work, so they were trying a different tactic.

There is a disco at the rink every Friday, so the girls decided to go to check out the talent. They were looking for guys that were tall, and were not wobbly on the ice. They spotted 2 guys that fitted this bill, and dragged them off for what seemed like the Spanish Inquisition!

Fair play to them, the guys did seem keen enough to try Ice Dancing. Then they heard about the early morning training sessions. And there wasn’t as much enthusiasm after that as there was before.

Finally, the girls started to think realistically. Although these guys were decent skaters, it would take a lot of time to get them up to their standard. So, they concluded that it would be better to just keep looking for somebody that was already trained up.

So, in other words, this whole exercise did turn out to be as pointless as I expected it to be. You know, I’m not sure, but I think the “Looking for a partner” thing might just have been an excuse for them to go checking out guys… ;)

And they still haven’t told us Kershia’s story! (If they don’t tell us by the end of the series, I will…)

Next time (erm, in about 1h 40m from now :slink: ): Liam the Ice Hockey player is trying out for Team GB, but has food poisoning. And we (finally!) get back to Ella and Adriano, and the Icicles!

Sorry again that this is so late

Hmmm. It's only 10 minutes after I posted the review of last week's episode, and it is already time to post the reminder for this week's. :slink:

Just a wee reminder that the fifth episode of "Ice Stars" will start on the CBBC Channel at 17:00 BST, i.e. 1h 30m from now.

However, some weeks, people from "Ice Stars" have been appearing in the CBBC studio on Tuesday afternoons. And that is due to start in about 20–25 minutes from now.

So, you might want to keep an eye out just in case there are more in the studio this week.

Details on how to receive CBBC (along with links to videos of the previous episodes) are in this post.

As usual, I will record it and watch it later.

Thanks for all the novice links. I'd found them on stats on ice, but that was the only place I could find, so I'm glad to get a few more leads. And so many thanks CaroLiza_fan for posting their latest program. I saw the pics of the costumes on fb and was wondering what the program looked like. It's an ambitious program, but I'm looking forward to seeing it grow over the season. I know nothing about novice level skaters in general or the average skill level of novice vs. junior, but I do hope they're able to turn junior sooner rather than later. I'm definitely looking forward to cheering them on!

Thank you for the tip off that they have a Facebook page. It took a while, but I've managed to hunt it down. So, guess what I'm going to join now...

Incidentally, for those who have access to iPlayer, I have added the link for Episode 6 to this post.

Aw, I could have linked to it and saved you all the trouble. Sorry about that! I would have done so if I'd thought to!

Oh, don't worry about it! I got there in the end. It's just another example of why I don't like the search feature on Facebook being so precise. There were just so many possible combinations of words that you could put into the search box!

Episode 6 – Sickness Strikes

We were back to normal, having 3 strands this week – Ice Hockey, Synchro and Ice Dance.

Starting off with Ice Hockey, and we had a quick re-cap about what happened when Liam was sent off in that crucial game in Episode 3.

As I expected he would be after some time had passed, the coach (Paul) was very philosophical about what happened. But, I was surprised (and impressed) with Liam. He seems to have had an epiphany, realising that he has to control his temper.

It looks like TheGrandSophy was right to not give up on him!

Anyway, the story was that he was going to Dumfries in Scotland to try out for Team GB ahead of the upcoming Youth Olympics in Lillehammer. Liam and 9 other players were trying out, and some of them he knew from playing for England.

The first test was a speed test, where they had to do a lap of the rink. Then there was an agility test, where they had to skate around cones. Liam did well in these 2 tests, but then he started to feel sick. Liam, 2 of the other players, and some of the parents had got food poisoning from eating dodgy eggs at the hotel they were staying at.

But, they had to get on with it. Next was another agility test, but this time with a puck. Then there was a shooting test, where the net was boarded up, except for the four corners. You could see that Liam was struggling by now, and he only managed to score 1 goal. Finally there was a passing accuracy test. And he actually did very well here.

Tests over, the players were told that they would be contacted within the next 2 to 3 days. When talking to camera afterwards, the Team GB coach said that Liam did well, and was definitely one of six players that was in the mix. But, Liam wasn’t as confident. But, as a further sign of how far he has come on, he was philosophical about it.

Next, it was to Synchro, and this week we were focussing in on the Icicles captain, Emily. Emily has been skating for 10 years, and it is not just a big part of her life, but also her family’s. Her Mum (Penny) makes the costumes, while her sister (Lizzie) does the make-up.

This is Emily’s first year as captain but, at school, it is also Lower Sixth Form (or "Year 13", as it now tends to be known). Which means she is doing her AS Levels this year. And her schoolwork is suffering. So, Emily is trying to decide whether to quit skating now, so that she can concentrate fully on schoolwork in Upper Sixth Form ("Year 14") when she is doing her A Levels, or whether to stay on for another year and then quit before she goes to Uni.

For me, it was surprising to hear that her family wants her to continue. I would have thought that they would have been taking the “education is the priority” line. But, they know how much Emily enjoys skating, and they enjoy being involved as well.

Next we moved onto the Ice Dance strand. Now, when I was writing about the “Next Time” section at the end of Episode 5, I said that we were returning to Ella and Adriano. Well, as it turned out, Adriano barely appeared at all (only for a meal at the start) – it was all about Ella.

She was talking about how she had been skating for 5 years, and was showing us her medals (though not in the same way that Rais and Oren were showing their medals the other week, thank goodness!)

Ella trains 20 hours a week, and she was explaining that the other kids at school don’t seem to understand just how much time she does train. She was saying that she sometimes has to miss classes, and the other kids accuse her of skiving, and give her a hard time for it. They can’t understand that it is actually harder for her, because she still has to catch up on what she’s missed.

Ella says she is not going to stop because of what people say about her. (By this stage, she is not far off crying). She doesn’t want to quit skating, because she knows she’ll regret it when she’s older. And she says that although she has lost friends because of skating, she has other friends.

This led into a section where Ella and some friends were playing on a trampoline. They were asking what her costume looked like, and from the description she gave, it sounds pretty wild!

We then returned to the Icicles, and started with a recap of what happened the last time we saw them in Episode 1. Now, they are preparing for the World Championships, and a special technical coach (Chris) has been brought in alongside their regular coach (Esther). Suffice to say, he is very strict.

You know the way that Synchro either looks great, or it doesn’t. There is no in-between. Well, during the training session we saw, it certainly didn’t look great. And Chris was getting very cross.

Next thing you know, Emily has hurt her shoulder. She wasn’t sure if it had “popped out a bit and then back” but it really hurt. But, ever the professional, she carried on with the session. Even though she was clearly in a lot of pain. After a while she got some strapping put on it to see if that would help.

Away from Emily, Chris was getting even crosser. He was telling off 2 girls for standing too close together, as there wouldn’t be enough room for the girl behind them to get through the gap. And he ended it by shouting “Injured Emily is doing it better than you two!”

Once they were re-positioned, they did the move. But Chris wasn’t happy. So, they did it again. And Emily fell. On her bad shoulder. And she was in a LOT of pain. She was crying and barely able to catch a breath. Chris and Esther helped her up, and then tried to cheer her up. But, that was the end of the session for her. The question is: is this the end of her season, and possibly her career?

Unsurprisingly, this marked the move to one of the other strands! It was back to Liam to get his results. Now, we weren’t told it in so many words, but Liam gave the impression that to get in the team, you had to be in the Top 3. Liam came 5th. His Dad (Mark) congratulated him, pointing out that being Top 5 was an achievement. But Liam went quiet.

Mark did a piece to camera explaining that this was typical Liam. He realised Liam was disappointed because, after all, every kid wants to be number 1. But he made very clear how proud he was of Liam. Then we went to Liam, and he was again being very philosophical, talking about how good an experience it was. The narrator summed the whole thing up perfectly. She said:

“Coming 5th in the country is a great result, especially when he was sick. Just imagine what he could do when he’s on top form”.

Back to Ella, and we got a surprise appearance from Kloe (who was now blonde). The girls were having a heart-to-heart in a café. The narrator said that Kloe “has heard that Ella has been having a tough time fitting in recently, and wants to share her experiences”. And, after hearing the story of what it was like for Kloe when she first moved from Hungary, there couldn’t have been a better person for Ella to get advice from!

There’s not really much point going through the conversation, because they were both saying what you would expect them to be saying in this sort of conversation. But, Kloe did make the very good point that Ella is really young, and her friends are also really young. And that things will get better with time (although Kloe didn’t actually say it outright, she was implying that things will improve as they mature).

Back to Emily, and it is “only days” to the World Championships, and her shoulder is still giving her gip. We saw her Mum heating up something for Emily to put on her shoulder. And there was a funny quip about it making the tape stick more!

With the typical mentality of an elite athlete, even if her shoulder does get worse, Emily is determined to go to the World Championships. She said:

“The programmes are only 3 minutes and 4 minutes so, to have… being in pain just for that long, and to be able to be at something so amazing, it’s definitely worth the pain”.

But, it is Esther who has the final say. And she was being a lot more realistic:

“Obviously, we couldn’t ever let anybody skate in the programme if they are seriously injured. It’s really important that they are fit enough to skate the programme and if they’re not, we would have to consider putting a reserve in”.

Finally, we went to a sleepover that some of the younger members of the Icicles were having. It was a week before Worlds, and they wanted to know the latest about Emily’s shoulder. One girl (out of shot) said that she was in a lot of pain yesterday. And then another (also out of shot) said “the doctor told her not to skate for a couple of weeks as well. But she has to”. And I was thinking “That’s a very selfish attitude to have. Like, does the poor girl’s health not matter?!”

Then another girl (this time in shot) said: “When she’s going to get there, she’s going to, like, pull it out of the bag and give it everything.” Aimee (the girl hosting the party) added “That’s just dedication”.

The girl that originally asked about Emily then added “Yeah, ’cause she needs to just rest it, and then at Worlds she can really bring it out. Because if she keeps using it all the time, she’s gonna make it worse”.

The same girl then asked if they thought Emily would stay on as captain next year, or if they thought she would leave. Aimee replied that “she might leave because of A-Levels, but it would be really nice if she stayed.”

The girl asking all the questions said “Yeah, I think she’s a really good captain”. She then asked that, if Emily did leave, would any of them would like to be captain. And there were unanimous replies of “No”! Somebody out of shot (possibly Aimee) said “I’d make an awful captain”, and another girl said “Too immature”, to which Aimee replied “Yeah, too immature” It then descended into laughter.

Next Time: It’s the World Championships for the Icicles, and it looks like Afton is going to be featured again. We are introduced to a young Singles Skater called Solomon. And we are introduced to another young Synchro skater called Asiah. Oh, and she wears a hijab…

That should be an interesting episode!

I zapped into the start of the episode with the "competition in Luxembourg". What a lovely little show! Will make an effort to watch more episodes, this was probably a repeat of a repeat, anyway (on children's BBC, I think).

You know, before the series started, I wasn't sure what it was going to be like. But, it has turned out to be extremely enjoyable.

It is just a pity that only the first 2 episodes have appeared on YouTube. Because I know how much figuire skating fans outisde of the UK would enjoy watching the series.

I was going to wait until next Sunday or Monday to mention it in this thread, but since you have just watched the competition episode, I think it would be appropriate to do it now.

After being a reserve on the provisional entry lists for Colorado Springs and Toruń, the skater I have been referring to as "Josh B" will be the British entry in the final 2 rounds of the Junior Grand Prix Series.

30[SUP]th[/SUP] Sep – 3[SUP]rd[/SUP] Oct 2015: Logroño (Spain)
Men's Provisional Entry List

7[SUP]th[/SUP] Oct – 10[SUP]th[/SUP] Oct 2015: Zagreb (Croatia)
Men's Provisional Entry List

We'll have to keep an eye out to see if we can spot Kloe cheering him on in the audience! ;)

:cheer: ALL THE BEST JOSH B!!! :cheer:

Oh hey, that's cool, so we may actually get to see one of these skaters in the upcoming JGPs? Nice!
Thanks for the headsup, I will switch on the telly. It airs on digital telly in the Netherlands, including channel 63 on Ziggo. (BBC3/CBBC).

Before I go into the episode, I just want to tie up some loose ends. Firstly, there were no studio guests this week. HOWEVER, Katie Thistleton and Hacker did get a video call from Josh B just before the episode came on.

Well, they made out that it was a video call, but it was obvious that it was pre-recorded. All it consisted of was him saying hello, and then going out into the rink and doing a camel spin.

But, it did gave Katie a chance to throw in a bad pun. The picture was breaking up, and Hacker commented about “It keeps going funny, is that the connection” and Katie replied “It’s a poor connection – it’s frozen hasn’t it?! ’Cause of the ice – you get it? Like the ice, it’s frozen…”

Yes, we get it. But we’d rather not!

Half an hour earlier, they had shown a preview of the episode, and the antics were even more cringe-worthy! They showed a clip of one of the icicles taking off her skateguard, and it led to this sketch where Hacker was trying to work out what it was for and why it needed to be taken off. Oh, it was awful!

I’m getting too old for this!

Anyway, onto the episode!

Episode 7 – International Rivalry

I have to be honest – this was not the best episode of the series. And a large part of that assessment was because of the way it was put together.

You know the way that each episode has three strands, and they jump between them to try to keep the attention of the young viewers. And usually they nicely interweave the stories, with (say) 5 minutes on one story, then 5 minutes on another, and so on. Well, this time, for the first five minutes or so of this episode, we were changing story every minute! And it was getting extremely irritating!

In my recent reviews, I have got into the habit of telling you what happened in the order it happened. But, I can’t do that this time – it would be impossible to follow! So, I will revert back to my original style of talking about each strand in its entirity.

The first strand was about a Singles skater called Solomon. He is 8 years old, and we see his Mum getting him up at 4:45am. And he is no-where near fully awake! At the rink, we see him and some other skaters being taken through a warm-up by their coach (Joy) before they go out on the ice.

Already, it was obvious that this was a strict coach that pushes her students hard. And the piece she did to camera more than confirmed it!

“Getting out of bed at 4 or 5 in the morning, they are not coming to a playgroup. They’re coming to learn to develop the body, to be able to go onto the ice, to do the skills, and progress throughout their skating career”

Come on, these are kids! Skating is supposed to be fun for them!

The next time we come to Solomon, his Mum is picking him up from school. He is going home to get changed, fed and then back to the rink. At home, we find out a bit about his family. He is from a family of 6 children. And there was an interesting piece with 2 of his sisters, Enid and Lydia.

Enid told us that they also had skating lessons, and tried out for the Synchro team. But, they realised that their parents couldn’t afford for all 3 of them to be skating, so since Solomon was the best of the three, the girls let him continue. Lydia then added that although she sacrificed skating for Solly, she is the best one at Chess.

We then finally get to see Solomon on the ice. And Joy was shouting and roaring at them. I have to be honest, if it was me, I would have been walked out and never came back. So, fair play to the kids for having the determination to keep at it.

Anyway, after being made out like an auld targe, she then showed her softer side. She had gathered the 4 pupils together and told them that it was time to train the axel. And she asked who was excited, and three of them put their hands up straight away, while Solomon was more hesitant. But, she explained what it entailed to them very calmly and softly. It was like a different woman!

Anyway, they then started trying, and Solomon was falling. Now, I’m not sure whether Joy was talking to him or talking to us, but she made a very good observation:

“When you think about, they’re coming down onto a hard slippy cold surface with a very, very thin blade and a big fat boot on the end of their foot”.

Unfortunately, that’s where the producer cut off that sound bite. So, we don’t know what the point she was getting to was!

Anyway, they then showed Solomon doing some spins, and Joy was back to shouting. But then he did it right and she was praising him no end! Then she revealed something to us. Solomon is the sort of pupil that while he is skating, he is always listening out, looking for information. And she said that he is “an absolute dream to teach”.

What this was all leading up to was that Joy wants Solomon to do his axel as part of a routine with some older boys for the centre’s annual gala. We met the woman in charge of the gala, Tamara (I was intrigued by her accent, so I did a bit of searching, and found out that she was Tamara Glad, a coach from Croatia), and she told us that the theme was “Around The World In 80 Skates”.

Apparently, Tamara has been going around the centre talent spotting, so Joy brought her along to see Solomon. He had to do his axel three times in a row to show that he could do it consistently. The first attempt, he fell. But then he did it successfully three times. So, he got in.

The next strand I want to discuss is a Synchro strand. Now, there were actually 2 Synchro strands, but we will come to the main one later. This one was about a young skater called Asiyah. She is Muslim, and wears a hijab. So, I’m not entirely sure how doing Synchro is going to work, given the obsession with everybody looking identical. But, that is just me thinking things through too much.

Anyway, she really enjoys skating, and has been doing Synchro for 2 years. And she explained the progression. She started off in “Ice Pops”, then moved onto “Icetastics”, and the aim is to make it into the “Icicles”. And when talking about the Icicles, she was so in awe of them! But, first she has to make it into the juvenile team. We weren’t told their name in the programme, but a quick search revealed they are called the “Silhouettes” (evidently not a jazzy enough name for this series!)

The next time we come to Asiyah, she is at home. First we see her in the kitchen, where her Dad is washing the dishes. This isn’t significant; I am just mentioning it so that I can point out that he is wearing TARTAN TREWS and a WAISTCOAT!!! For washing the dishes!!!

In this part, Asiyah is talking about Islam, and about wearing the hijab (OK, so she just refers to it as a headscarf. This is a children’s programme, remember, so they don’t want to make things too complicated!). She explains that her Mum and her sister also wear headscarves, and she likes it. She would like to see more Muslim girls getting into Synchro, and skating in general. Then she says she has only ever seen one Muslim girl skating internationally, and she is from the Emirates. (Mmmm, I wonder who that could be… :sarcasm: ) And Asiyah would like to meet her one day.

So, Zahra Lari, if you are reading this, the invitation has been extended!

Back in the kitchen, and Asiyah’s Dad asks what time the squad announcements were due, and when Asiyah said the time, he casually pointed out that that was 5 minutes ago. So, mad rush to the laptop, and she found out she had got into the team.

So, she is now 2 squads away from the Icicles.

Which brings us neatly onto the third strand: the Icicles going to the World Championships in Zagreb.

The episode started with a re-cap of what has happened so far in the series with the Icicles. And, ominously, there was an emphasis placed on the injuries to Afton and Emily. Thankfully, this was just the producers trying to lead us up the garden path. Both were there, and both were fine to compete.

They left on a bus for Heathrow at 2am!!! After arriving at the rink, we saw them having a sing-song in the changing rooms (“Everytime We Touch” by Cascada). And they were still singing when waiting to get onto the ice for their 20 minute practice!

Instead of showing us much of the practice, the producers decided to give us some background information. Between the coach Esther and the narrator, we found out that the Icicles were 14th out of 19 teams competing at Worlds the previous year. But this year, there were 24 teams, and so it was going to be harder. The narrator also introduced what was to become the over-riding theme of the whole strand: the aim was to beat France. And by the end of the episode, you were fed up hearing about wanting to beat France!

Getting back to the practice, and I liked the way the woman over the PA told them their time was up: “Please leave the ice. Have a nice day!”

When we returned to the Icicles, it was the day of the competition. And this was where Afton was featured again. She was led to believe that her Mum (Michelle) wasn’t able to come. But, this was all just a rouse so that she could arrive on the day and surprise her. One of the other girls on the team, Sam, was in on the plan, and had made sure Afton was in her room.

Oh, it was brilliant. Michelle knocked on the door, and one of the girls shouted it was open. And she went in, and as soon as Afton saw her, she jumped off the bed, screamed “Mum!” and ran over to get the biggest cuddle you have ever seen! All in the blink of an eye!

Next time we came back to them, the Icicles were getting their make-up done (although it wasn’t pointed out this episode, it was Emily’s sister Lizzie doing it as usual). And the girl that had been asking all the questions at the party in the previous episode was back in action! Not asking questions this time, but just going on about how everything they had worked for over the past year boiled down to these 3 minutes. And I was thinking “are you trying to make them nervous?!”

Competition time! But first, they showed a bit of the Opening Ceremony, which looked impressive. Then they showed Esther having her pre-competition pep talk to the team, and then the girls having a team chant in the foyer. And then they had a few of the parents talking to camera about how nervous they were!

We then went into the changing rooms, and the Icicles were trying to having a moment of concentration. And the French team next door were making a racket. And Esther was trying to tell the girls not to let it get to them, and that the French would be celebrating when getting their scores no matter how they did.

The reason she did this was because the French team (the Black Diam’s) was on directly before them, and so would be getting their scores while the Icicles were getting into position.

Now, they showed a few clips, and the narrator was saying that they were looking good. But, from the couple of clips they showed, I didn’t think they looked great.

It’s really hard to judge from a couple of clips. So, here is a video of the whole routine:

WJSSC 2015 Zagreb - Team Black Diam`s Junior - France - Short Program

You can even see the Icicles in their sky blue dresses in the background waiting to come on!

Well, the French finished, and as they were coming off the ice, the Icicles were coming onto the ice. And, I have to saw, it was a badly planned thing, as the two gates were right beside each other. Anyway, the French then got their scores, and some of the Icicles were covering their ears as they didn’t want to hear it. No, I don’t know how that would have drowned out the PA either!

As they did with the Singles skaters at the Coupe de Printemps, the BBC just showed edited together clips with their own music over the top of it. But, if you want to see the proper version of the routine, here it is:

WJSSC 2015 Zagreb - Team Icicles Junior - Great Britain - Short Program

Oh no!!! If I had realised it was “Let It Go”, I wouldn’t have bothered looking it up!!! I HATE THAT SONG!!! I much preferred the BBC’s music!!! :drama:

Here are the SP results and the SP Protocols. I am no expert on Synchro but, based on what I saw on those 2 videos, they got the French and British teams the right way around.

Awww!!! It was great to watch the girls celebrating, both when they got the results and afterwards. Afton was talking about it being the first time they had beat the French, and being totally overwhelmed. Emily talked about how everybody was so happy, crying and screaming with happiness, and how it was “the best moment ever”. Esther’s comment was the best, though. She said

“I feel like I’m in a dream. I still don’t feel right, like. My heart’s beating as fast as it’s ever beaten in it’s life. I’ve cried more than I’ve ever cried. I’m just… I can’t believe it. I’m so proud of them.”

Now, do you remember how I was complaining about how the producers of the series put together the coverage of the Singles skaters competing at the Coupe de Printemps. Well, this was as bad. No, it was worse, because they really did give the impression that this was a one-round competition. It was all about the Short Programme. There was no mention of the Free Skate AT ALL!!!

But, thankfully, we can see how they both got on in the Free Skate:

WJSSC 2015 Zagreb - Team Black Diam`s Junior - France - Free Skating

WJSSC 2015 Zagreb - Team Icicles Junior - Great Britain - Free Skating

Incidentally, the user who uploaded these videos actually has ALL of the routines from last year’s Junior Worlds. So, thank you so much for filming these videos and uploading them to YouTube.

Now, I haven’t watched these Free Skate videos, as I want to get as much of what I have left from the Cup of Austria and Lombardia Trophy watched before tomorrow. But, I have had a look at the FS results and the FS Protocols.

And, finally, here is a link to the overall results.

Next Time: Jellie have a competition, and Ellie admits to being nervous. We see a clip of a school assembly, where it is being announced that one of the pupils is getting a skating scholarship. And Kloe goes home to visit her family.

Looking forward to it!

Um... Doesn't everyone?!

My Dad gave me a quare look when I suggested that this is what I wanted him to wear next time he is doing the dishes!

By the way, I just edited the end of my review, as I realised that I had forgotten to put in a link to the overall results! Oops! :o: :slink:

Just a wee reminder that the eighth episode of "Ice Stars" will start on the CBBC Channel at 17:00 BST, i.e. 1h 25m from now.

However, some weeks, people from "Ice Stars" have been appearing in the CBBC studio on Tuesday afternoons. And that is due to start, erm, sometime between now and 16:30!!! :slink: (If the past few weeks have taught me anything, it is that the start time of the studio stuff really varies! :rolleye: )

So, you might want to keep an eye out just in case there are more in the studio this week.

I can tell you one thing for nothing. If there is anybody in the studio, it won't be Josh B. Because, he is probably already in Spain getting ready to make his Junior Grand Prix debut in Logroño on Thursday night!!!

:cheer: ALL THE BEST JOSH B!!! :cheer:

Details on how to receive CBBC (along with links to videos of the previous episodes) are in this post.

As usual, I will record it and watch it later.

Right, I'm away to watch the Lombardia Senior Ladies FS (yes, I'm still trying to catch up!)

How shall I put this?

You can tell that it’s getting near the end of the series.

For a start, whereas in previous weeks they have been telling us what was coming up during the CBBC Studio pieces, this week it was only immediately before the episode came on. And all they did was 2 things.

First, they showed show a vertical video (arrrrgh!!!!) of Kloe doing some spins. Admittedly, it was a lot better quality a video than the one of Josh B they showed the previous week, which was coughing and spluttering.

The second thing was to show a 2 second clip of Josh and Ellie taken from the episode. Unfortunately, the clip they showed pretty much gave away a crucial part of what was going to happen in Josh and Ellie’s strand. So, thanks a lot BBC! :sarcasm:

And that was it. They then did a big feature connected to a dancing series that they show on Fridays, called “The Next Step”. In fact, they seem to be really going all out to promote that series as, from what I can tell, nearly every studio piece discusses it!

Episode 8 – Home Sweet Home

And you can also tell that it is getting near the end of the series from the content o f the episode. To be brutally honest, there wasn’t actually much happening in this episode.

That said, there were a few interesting things that came out of the three strands.

The episode started with some preparations for the gala. This led into the first strand – Ice Dance with Josh and Ellie!!! And we found out something that had never been mentioned in the series before, and which I feel should have been part of their story from the start. Josh also does ballet.

Like, people go on here about how important ballet training is, and they don’t even mention it until this late in the series?! And they only mention it in a negative connotation, as the storyline is that Josh has to choose between ballet and skating.

Now, here is the interesting bit. You know the way that we have been talking about the lack of funding for skating in Britain recently, after Smart / Buckland, Yankowskas / Gaman and Fancy / Boyadji all split. Well, that was also brought up here.

The narrator explained that “training, travelling and buying all of the kit needed for skating costs thousands of pounds every year for Josh’s family”. And then they go to Josh, who tells us that “because ballet is funded, if I was to choose that, then we would have money for the whole family to do something that we wanted to do together”.

Thankfully, this was then balanced up by Josh’s Mum, Jo, who said “Even though obviously ballet is funded and skating is not, we don’t want to put that onto him. We want him to decide for himself where his passion lies the most”.

Josh has been offered a full scholarship for the Central School Of Ballet, in London. So, we see him and Jo being given a tour of the school. First, he is shown the timetable, and then one of the lessons. Now, I am sorry, but I HAVE to point it out. They showed some guy doing some spinning move, and I swear his neck was proportionately as long as a giraffe’s!

Afterwards, Josh was given the opportunity to talk to 2 of the students, Adam and Stephen. Now, I don’t know if this was just the way it was edited, but they seemed to be talking more about the practicalities. Like, how hard is it to get to the school on the Tube. And about cooking, so that you are not living on ready meals. Then Josh brought up the fact that he is trying to choose between ballet and skating, and the guy that was talking about the food said “That’s a really tough decision. You should always, like, follow what you love”.

Next, we were off to Hungary with Kloe. At the start of this strand, they re-hashed the bit form Episode 4 where she was talking about what it was like when she first arrived. The last time she went was 4 months ago at Christmas, so she was looking forward to seeing her Dad, her sister and the rest of her family again. At her home, she was telling us that it was just like being a normal teenager again.

We saw a clip of Kloe cooking scrambled eggs with her Dad, Gyorgy. (We didn’t need to be told that he was her Dad – you can see the similarity between them!) And during it, she was talking about how she doesn’t get to see him much, but they are always talking on the phone. And it was funny, because you could tell that she had also mentioned Skype, but that the BBC had edited that out, leaving a strange pause in the middle of the sentence!

Next, she met up with her Grandma. And I swear, they are so alike that it was freaky! No question about it, that is how Kloe is going to look when she is that age! Anyway, they were going to the hairdressers, because Kloe wanted to go blonde to look like Cara Delevingne. Now, maybe I am a thick bloke, but I couldn’t actually see any difference. It wasn’t even light enough to qualify as that awful “bronde” word! And it certainly wasn’t anywhere near as blonde as it was when she was in the CBBC studio a few weeks ago!

After this, she went for a coffee with her older sister, Vanda. And the whole of the English part of the conversation was about how much they missed each other. It was so cute!

Back to Nottingham, and we moved onto the third strand. Now, I don’t know how to classify this strand. It started off with Charlie, the 9-year old Ice Hockey player we met in the first episode. But, the strand wasn’t actually about Ice Hockey. Charlie was telling us that he started playing when he was 6, and got talent spotted, and got a scholarship. And it meant that he got to have time on the ice for free.

Now, it is time for more scholarships to be given out. So, all of Charlie’s year were heading to the ice rink to get assessed. On the way, they showed a conversation between Charlie and a girl called Matilda. And she asked him “Which is more fun – ice hockey or ice skating?” To which Charlie predictably replied “Er, hockey”. But it was Matilda’s response that was priceless: “But, it’s dangerous!” So cute! (Just to finish the discussion of the conversation, Charlie then said “Well, still, once you get used to it…”)

There were 60 children competing for 2 scholarships. So, they had o be assessed by the coaches. Cue a whole pile of funny clips of children falling over on the ice! One of the coaches, Mandy, explained that “There are always children that can naturally glide, so we’re looking for that”. Cue clips of children not falling over!

Next, it was back to Josh and Ellie. Well, back to Ellie, anyway. She is at school, and during a break she is talking to a couple of friends about the situation.

Now, this is what I didn’t like about this strand. We know that if Josh went for ballet it would have a massive impact on Ellie’s skating career. It has been a real theme of the series that there are not enough male Ice Dancers about. And any time Ellie was speaking about it (be it in this part of the episode, or in other parts), it was coming from her heart. But for me, the way the programme makers edited it together each time was not fair. It made it look like emotional blackmail.

I wouldn’t normally go through a conversation in this much detail, but I will with the discussion between Ellie and her school friends.

Girl 1 asked Ellie “what happens if he goes?” And Ellie replied in a sing-song fashion “I stop skating!” Then there was a very rough edit (see what I mean!) before Girl 2 said “What, so you stop everything?”, to which Ellie replied quietly “Yeah”. Girl 1 then asked “Why do you have to stop everything because he’s leaving?”, and Ellie said sadly “Because I can’t get anywhere without him”.

I’ll just interrupt here to say that it was obvious to us in the know that Ellie was referring to the difficulties of finding a new partner. But, the producers really did make it look like Ellie had no confidence whatsoever, and that she was only capable of skating when Josh was around. Which is complete rubbish! But this impression was reinforced with the next exchange (there was a change of camera angle here, but it’s hard to tell if there was anything edited out).

Girl 2 asked “Can’t you do it by yourself?”, to which Ellie replied “Yeah, but I won’t get anywhere, will I?” Girl 2 then asked bluntly “Why?!” and then added “Cause you’re amazing!”

By this stage, I was getting really annoyed at the way Ellie was being portrayed. But then, after another change of camera angle, we FINALLY reached the crux of the matter when Girl 1 asked “Is there no more boy dancers that can, like, help you achieve what you do if Josh actually goes?” Ellie replied with a sarcastic “No!”, but then elaborated “Everyone’s got a partner”.

Now, this was the point where you would have expected the conversation to go down the route where they would talk about the difficulties of getting a partner. But it didn’t. In the same shot (so nothing was edited out), Girl 1 asked “So could you not make it to the, like, Olympics or anything with… if he goes?” To which Ellie shook her head, and then burst into a giggling fit. And Girl 1 said “Oh, that’s so bad”. Then they all got up to head back to class.

I felt really uncomfortable after that conversation. The thing is, watching it again for this review, I couldn’t help wondering: was it all a set-up? Were the girls with Ellie told by the producers to ask specific questions, so as to provoke the response they wanted from an oblivious Ellie?

The way Ellie replied to the questions she was asked seemed totally natural. But it was the direction that the other girls were taking the conversation in which seemed suspicious. It did not seem like the way you would expect a conversation on this topic between a group of girls this age to go. Like, that comment about the Olympics was completely out of the blue, and it was obvious that it was just thrown in to steer Ellie away from a discussion about the lack of boys in the sport.

Throughout this series, it has been obvious that Josh and Ellie are incredibly close. But, throughout this episode, it really did seem like the producers were trying to drive a wedge between them to add to the drama. And that is just not right.

If my theory is right, and these girls were acting on instructions from the producers, then they should not be blamed. They were just pawns in a game that the producers were playing. That is why I have only referred to them as “Girl 1” and “Girl 2” in this review, rather than by their first names (which we were told). Because I don’t want them to be portrayed in a bad light, or suffer a backlash, because of what I have said.

Anyway, back to Hungary, and Kloe and Vanda were visiting the ice rink where they started skating. Kloe explained that she trained there from when she was 7 to when she was 12. And she said that she did lots of competitions there, including Nationals. Vanda was then talking about how Kloe is improving, and how proud she is of her little sister. Kloe also told us that for the gala, she was (unsurprisingly!) doing a routine to Hungarian music.

Kloe also had a catch up with one of her skating friends. But, they didn’t put up a name graphic, and I didn’t recognise her.

Finally, there was a family get together at her grandparent’s house. And we found out that Kloe’s Dad and her Grandad were both Ice Hockey players. And Kloe told us that “Before I started figure skating, my Grandad didn’t want me to do it, because hockey players don’t really like figure skaters”. But, she went on to explain that once he saw her at Nationals, and realised how good she was, that he came round to the idea.

It was back to Josh and Ellie, but thankfully it wasn’t the whole “will he / won’t he” thing. This time, they were taking part in a “big competition in Bracknell”. It was their first competition after moving up from Basic Novice to Advanced Novice.

Ellie was describing what the nerves were like: “When I’m competing at competition, it feels like someone’s trying to dance on your stomach. You can feel butterflies. It’s really nerve-wrecking.” Then the narrator started talking about the unclear future again, and concluded that “their first competition at a higher level could be their last”. I was ready to scream. But then Josh, Ellie and Woody took us through the rules.

As with all the competitions that have been covered in the series, it was made out to be a one round competition. In this case, the Free Dance. So, to provide a bit of context before we get to that, here are the results of the Pattern Dances:

Rocker Foxtrot Results and Protocols.
Starlight Waltz Results and Protocols.
Pattern Dance Overall Results.

Again, as with all the competitions that have been covered in this series, the BBC did not show proper coverage of the Free Dance. Instead, they showed highlights with their own music inserted on top.

Everything was going well. Then Josh lost his balance while doing a simple dance on the spot thing behind Ellie, and as his leg came up, it took Ellie down as well.

As you would expect, the narrator tried to build up the drama after this. But, in the end the 2 points in deductions for the fall didn’t matter. Everything else was that good enough for them to still win by half a point.

There was a really funny part afterwards where Josh and Ellie were discussing it and Josh said to her “Obviously, you know, it was all your fault that we fell over”. And you should have seen the look on Ellie’s face! If looks could kill…

So Josh very quickly had to laugh and say “I’m joking! I know… I know it was my fault. Mostly”. To which Ellie shouted back at him “Yeah, it was your fault!”

Like an old married couple!

Free Dance Results and Protocols.

Next, it was back to Charlie’s school, and they were having a special assembly to reveal who was getting the scholarships, consisting of free lessons for a 6-week course. First recipient was a boy called Ashley, and the second was a girl called Destiny. And both just happened to have been featured earlier in the episode when they were doing the assessments.

Finally, it was time for another reveal. Josh and Ellie were meeting up for Josh to reveal his decision. OK, so from how the conversation has gone in this thread and others, we already know what his decision was. But, let’s pretend for a moment that we don’t.

Josh really dragged it out, as if it he was one of the judges on the X Factor when they are revealing whether or not the contestant is going through to the Live Shows. And then, eventually, he said “I’ve decided to do another year of skating”, to which Ellie laughed and said “That’s great. So I’ve got YOU for another year!” And although her reaction was rather sarcastic, you could see how delighted she was! (As I said, they’re like an old married couple!)

Ellie then did a piece to camera in the corner of the café where she said “ I’m really happy with what Josh has told me today. It’s really good news, and I’m really happy about it”. And as they were walking down the street afterwards, Ellie said to Josh “I’m so happy you’re staying”, laughed, and then pushed him! And Josh said “Cheers!” For the third time in this comment… they’re like an old married couple!

Next Time: We FINALLY get to see Adriano and Ella working together. Singles skaters Kloe and Alexia go to some science experience thingy. And Speed Skater Izzy finds out if she’s fast enough for the Olympic squad.

Hopefully there will be more on ice action (and less producer-created drama) than there was this episode.

Whew! What a lot of drama. Although actually I had wondered that before, what would happen if Josh and Ellie were ever to split up. Given the alarming rapidity with which Britain's teams are breaking up, she might be able to find another partner easily enough in the junior ranks. But obviously I'm really happy they didn't!! :cheer:

I'm not sure what the school friend interview was all about. It made me really uncomfortable. I'm not sure why Ellie said she can't skate any more if Josh stops, as she knows that's not the case. Ellie does free skating on her own too. She is pretty good at it but hasn't competed for quite a while on her own due to a hip injury from jumping (that is better now). She prefers ice dance I think though. I am wondering if she was told what to say? I think her friends were told what to say for sure.
