COC:QUESTION, possible spoiler if nobody has seen it.

I see nothing in these threads that would describe perfectly the adverb artistically. Long line doesn't seem to do it. If one were to examine the examples given in these threads: S&Z v. B&S; Irina v. Sasha, all four cases have a varied style of artistry. I would conclude that we all have preferences, and so do the judges!.

It seems to come down to personal taste. There are skaters, e.g., Andrei and Evan whom I would call budding styles and I don't feel that they should be judged fully on artistry until I see their style fully developed. I also include Weir in that 'budding' group. I see artistry, yes, but it still needs to get some personality. Evgeni has already developed his definitive style with personality on ice, and so has Brian. There will be little, if any, change in their artistry (personality + style). Just my take on this artistry thing.

I agree Joe, but then I never thought the judges were impartial anyway - how can they be? They are, after all, only human. The number of times I have watched a program and have been thouroughly distrated from the good qualities because of something I didn't like about the program are too many to count. The judges, while not as bad can't be much different. They judge the elements fine, but somewhere in the back of their head is going to be a little voice saying 'I just didn't feel it' or 'I really didn't like that' and on some level the marks they give will reflect that. It's exactly the reason why we have 'wuz robbed' threads!

Case in point: Everyone says Evgeny has great artistry but I'm afraid I just don't see it. Sure he has great personality and presence on the ice, and his technical ability is almost second to none. But I find his over the top and in your face and at times all wrong for the music he choses. For example in his Adagio SP all I could think was how the fast, jumpy, sharp step sequence did not suit the music and how it would be much better for him to use a more flowing and balletic type of step sequences with the emphasis on deep edges. But then that's just my opinion and who am I to criticise those who think he has excellant artistry.

To me, at least a part of artistry is self expression, and Plushenko does just that. Some may not like it, but that does not make him less of an artist. Midori Ito was an artist on ice, IMO because of the way she expressed herself. So is Irina. Neither has the elegant lines, but they are themselves, without trying to be something they are not. I would say the same about Elvis Stojko.
