Daisuke Takahashi

In case anyone is wondering how Daisuke’s debut was received in Japan...here are some of the non-bashing opinions

- Wonderful to see him back
- Good for him but the media should have featured the winner (Kazuki Tomono )
- Media coverage is crazy
- Looked really tired. He is too old to compete.
- Why did he come back , does not make sense.
- Worried about the future of the sport if the younger skaters were beaten by a veteran with 4 years’ blank

I agree with everything except the “tired and too old”. (Only Dai knows the real reason for his comeback)

They probably have not seen all other male skaters struggle with the 4 min.

And yeah the young skaters better watch out! Although without the quads, Dai ‘s choreo is way more beautiful than any of them imho.

Absolutely beautiful FS... a dancer for sure.. one forgets he is on skates except when he glides.. the jumps are pure fluff, window dressing. Very very happy he is back!!

I am so happy to see Dai skating again! Although the free skate obviously had a lot of problems, he seemed to be in really good spirits afterwards. He was so nervous before but then after was laughing at his mistakes rather than seeming too disappointed. I am glad he is getting this chance to skate again. It would be a really hard thing to do after a career like he had but I'm glad he's doing what he wants now! It really is a beautiful program. I hope it gets a chance to shine more next time.

Ever since he announced his comeback to competitive skating, I've been so torn between being happy and extremely concerned. After watching his programs now, I'm x10 happier and x10 more extremely concerned. I simply don't know what I feel anymore :drama: He is a joy to watch regardless of how good his jums and spins are and I'm in love with his new programs, but please Dai, be careful and healthy!

There was a Kansai local special on Kinki Regionals last night, featuring Dai but covered some other skaters as well.
This video clip only has Daisuke parts.

Dai looks back at his SP, says his costume came with gloves but he was so nervous he forgot, and he was so focused he only look at the audience at the end of performance.

The coverage then goes on to recap his career, his struggles to maintain motivation after Vancouver; and at Sochi he could not gon“all out” but commented said he realized he had hit his limit.
But after 4 years he realized skating was the only thing for him, and decided to come back, determined not to put limits on himself any more and be a new version of himself.

His challenge with the LP was to maintain stamina throughout the program, which builds up towards the end.

(He says”Yabai“ repeatedly at the end of LP, which means “This is bad” or “I’m in trouble”.
He said he made a mistake in the choreography right from the beginning.

But Dai is very positive, wants to do better; he is only going upwards from here, since he got the feel of the competition back, in how to build himself up and practice, in spite of the difficulties.

You know, Inhave always loved the genuine and kind part of Dai‘s personality and am happy to see that has not changed as well.

His first competition went well, wishing the best for him until the Nationals. And maybe Worlds :drama:

RedGreen has kindly translated some of Dai's NHK interview highlights in this Twitter thread:

Dai: "I'm going to approach it with an attitude like, 'I won't lose to these youngsters!' [...] I don't want to lose to the younger guys, but if I do I won't be frustrated because of that. On the contrary, I would like for them to advance."

"I thought I'd be able to do better at Kinki. I can't believe it turned into such a mess. I guess that's what comps are like. I thought I was a bit calmer in the FS, but then I messed up the choreo and lost my composure. I kept messing up jumps. I will work harder next time."

"I'm glad I came back to compete. There are a lot of problems along the way, but I'm enjoying that, too. I don't know if that's okay...? I feel sorry [toward fans], but I would like to spend my time with something that fulfills me and make a fresh start."

Dai:"I heard it was very difficult for you guys getting into regionals but the arena for sectionals is a bit bigger so it'll be easier" and the fans were exchanging looks like, "someone tell him sectionals is already sold out, maybe then he'll understand how popular he is.

Dai on Shoma coming to see him at sectionals: "If he really is coming, then I really gotta do better [laugh]."

Looks like Dai was working with Benoit at Kansai University on FS brush up today. Benoit called Dai "fire on ice".

:love::love::love: Thanks, mikeko-san!

They are replacing Flip to somewhere else a little earlier in the second half, instead of as the final jump right after the Choreo Sq, aren't they? If so, I am relieved. I was so worried at watching Kinki's and his elements layout. IIRC he never did a jump after the choreo sq at the very end of the physically demanding free program before... Hopefully it'll work for Dai to keep his stamina for this fiery choreo sq as the music builds up towards the end. Also, to get enough level for the final spin. ;)Personally I just can't get enough of this choreo Sq, am repeating it again and again. I can watch it all day!

Looks like Benoit re-edited the music for Dai's FS.

Maybe they might have changed the elements layout, too?

Dai will not perform at the Rinkai Sports Center's re-opening ceremony this Sunday, prioritizing the preparation for Western Sectionals although he will be at the event.

He just finished his first competition for more than four years on Monday, and continued to work this week with Benoit to brush up the program. He must be feeling tired now.
It's good to see Dai making his own conditions a priority, which was never his option before Sochi.

Dai appeared in the event to celebrate the renewal of ice rink Rinkai Sports Center. The ice rink was in danger of shutdown but Daisuke led in fundraising activities to renovate it. The skaters from Kansai area, like Keiji Tanaka, Kazuki Tomono etc, Mitsuki Sumoto has skated there. Keiji, Kazuki and Kanako Murakami participated in this event as well.

Dai had originally planned to skate his programs but decided not to, To prioritize conditioning for his next competition.
