Deniss Vasiljevs

Deniss did so well last night! Great job and much kudos to him  Excited to see him perform in the gala!

Also, him + Stephane are so adorable :)

great performance at the nhk fs event. really energetic and musical - fab program, too. it's a pity that the pcs were so low - they should be higher.

his choice of music is great in both sp and lp - and the lp costume is impeccable. best-dressed gentleman of the nhk fs event and possibly this season bar patrick.

^ Yes, I definitely think he was robbed in PCS (especially compared to the marks some other bad performances got) but unfortunately, that's the way it goes. He's a new senior from a small federation, so he will have to earn his marks the hard way, slowly over time. Deniss always performs with high quality when he's in good shape, and the judges will have to start recognizing it eventually.

Here you can see Deniss and Stephane congratulating the medal winners - what a wonderful pair of sportsmen! (By the way, if anyone has a link to the full video on Youtube or elsewhere, please post it).

Non commentary video of his FS: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Sa-xD9akbHo Once again, congrats on great result Deniss! :cheer: Stephane and Deniss are such a nice people!

The congratulations are around 21 minute: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ks9CeShUNjU :)
Thanks for bringing this here! Congrats to Deniss on such a wonderful FS!!! :cheer: It's also so adorable how Deniss says, "We did it" and Stephane responds, "You did it." :luv17: What a good relationship they have. I love them both in the K&C too! They are so happy and positive!

Yes, he was criminally underscored! Having seen him live, I have to say, that he is very fast and has really good skating skills overall, especially considering his young age. He's also already very expressive and he conveys how much he enjoys being on the ice and performing. I was very impressed with him! If he manages to get the harder jumps, he will be a podium contender for sure!

Latvian Nationals will be held next weekend:

While I am sure Deniss will be a bit tired, I think he only needs to show up to win. ;)

His LP with BESP commentary...they were extremely complimentary, even suggesting he could be a future world champion. :)

edit - I also found this video of his LP from Rostelecom with a picture-in-picture of Stephane watching at the boards  Stephane is visible from 3:10 on.

@DenissVasiljevs - First gold medal of the season—and my second national title! Man bija liels prieks slidot mājās! 🇱🇻

SP: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1bgNPLWWXLU
LP: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oTxadpfJLUI (first couple minutes are of the warmup, if you want to skip ahead)

He popped the flip in the SP and lutz in the LP, and stepped out of his first 3A in the LP. But he didn't need to do much to win this competition. ;) Total score: 228.54

So happy for Deniss. A win is a win, even if there wasn't lots of competition. His jumps are looking good. I'm sure he's anxious to start his quad training, but I hope he eases into it so he doesn't injure himself...Hot coach is looking good too.:scard7:

This article has a section about Deniss's debut at Rostelecom, with comments from Stephane:

http://absoluteskating.com/index.php?cat=articles&id=2016rostelecom

It's pretty interesting. He explains how he was shocked by some of the marks given...I suppose most skating fans can relate to that, lol, but I'm sure it's nothing compared to what a coach must feel, especially one who is still establishing himself at the first major competition. But I get the sense that Stephane is the type who would do everything to make sure such situations don't happen again. He also talks about Deniss's music selections and how they came together as a team.

I really love what he says at the end: "[When you coach someone] so much is in your power, you have the whole life of your student in your hands. That's why I care so much about the person, not only the skater and the skating career, but about the person, whether the person is happy about what he's doing. This is how Peter [Grütter] taught me, giving me the education for life, not only for figure skating. Denis did not grow up with me, but he's now 17, he's still young and still learning."

"He's such a wonderful kid," Stéphane concluded, "I hope we will build something good for him, for his career and his life."
:luv17:

edit - after Christmas on Ice, it seems he will go back to Latvia for a show in Daugavpils on Christmas day, and present a new program

And here is another recent interview with Deniss from Latvia (in Russian):

http://www.grani.lv/latvia/75395-my-so-stefanom-samaya-molodaya-i-boevaya-komanda.html

The whole thing is worth reading, but I'll quote Deniss on his coach now:

I am very glad that went to Stefan Lambiel, because every day I learn a lot of new, made their discovery, and it's not just about figure skating. I even learned how to cook well. Stefan for me not only a mentor, he was my big brother that keeps me watching, I did lessons I care that I correctly and fully fed. It radically changed my life. When I go out on the ice, he supports me, rejoices successful performance and always smiling, and the smile - is the calling card of a gentleman. And it's great. :luv17:

So it's going to be a LesMis program then? Not sure how I feel about that. :confused2:
Or could Mr. Trevisan be refering to another Marius?

And we have another new interview:

He's training 4S at the moment, and eventually wants to start 4Lz and 4T. Just in case anyone is still worried that Stephane doesn't understand the need for quads. ;) Deniss explains that because of the injury, he didn't just lose time, but his ankles and body were weakened and he gained some weight. I love how honest he is about everything...he is such a sensible young man! And apparently, a philosopher, too!

I never understood that criticism, especially considering that Stéphane is not a shabby quad jumper himself and kinda had to do it to make up for his wonky 3A. I mean, c'mon, he can still jump 4Ts and he's been retired for 6 years now! I'm confident he's very diligent in making sure that all of the IJS requirements are met as well as that his student is as competitive with the top guys as possible. From these interviews you can really sense how seriously he's taking his coaching job.

Hey, someone to carry on Machida's spirit! ;)

Loved the interview, loved how they finish each other`s sentences and how Deniss managed to take over the interview. Captain Zebra and Philosopher Vasiļjevs FTW.

Their interactions really are cute. After LP Stephane and Deniss talked to Deniss` mom and Stephane hugged her for quite a while. I believe she dropped some tears. Stephane took very seriously taking photos of Deniss and it looked like he has a very friendly relationship with Latvian skater Angelina Kuchvalska - maybe there could be Stephane choreographed program for Angelina in the future - who knows. Deniss is all smiles and he clapped REALLY loudly for other skaters and officials in the ceremony - like seriously - my ears were hurting when he stood next to me and clapped.

I believe it will be LesMis. I just couldn`t find any other possible Marius. i`m very impatient to see the new program, but I can`t imagine which song if it`s LesMis.
