Deniss Vasiljevs

By the way, Deniss is often interviewed in Russian. Maybe there is some help in translations needed? I can try! For example, I haven't seen this one translated: https://youtu.be/ZIhuJ7G_X3k It's not the newest piece, but pretty interesting.

I would definitely love to see it!! It's really sad that I don't even understand Russian:( To be honest sometimes I really wonder what those Russian commentators speaking...

Haha, believe me, nothing useful. There are times when I would give a world just for them to shut up. Like in Deniss' SP on Worlds, for example!
Luckily, a commentless version was spreaded on tumblr today, bless the one who uploaded it...

That bad? LOL
Sometimes I listen to ESP's English commentatory as they usually say good things of the skaters (for example they said Deniss has great footwork and a future world champion etc.), so I wonder how the others comment on skaters...
Well, even I have zero understanding on Russian, I realise that they keep on talking throughout the program, that's for sure...

Well, usually two channels broadcast fs in Russia - Eurosport and Match (state sports channel). All youtube videos with Russian commentary comes from the latter, so I'll take it for consideration. To commentators are usually present: Alexander Grishin (just a regular sports journalist) and Tatiana Tarasova (the famous skating coach, you can google her easily). Grishin is ok in general, through performances he only points out the elements (which is useful to those, who can't tell one jump from another) or make some short comments on the skater, while Tarasova... I don't have anything against her, she was and is a great coach, two Russian Olympic champions were guided by her, but... She is horrible as a commentator. For starters, she has a very high-pitched voice, that is not pleasant to hear. And she likes speaking loud. Then comes her love for chit-chat. If she wants to speak about something, ANYTHING - nothing will stop her. Not her co-commentator, not any breathtaking performance on the ice, nothing! That's why here in Russia we have to listen about her career, about other coaches she knows (through Deniss' SP in Worlds she was babbling about how happy she is about Stephane doing so well in coaching - okay, I'm happy too and everything, but CAN WE PLEASE WATCH THE PROGRAMME?!), about what a skater should do in her opinion (yes, TA, we know Deniss needs quads, and he also knows that, and Stephane knows that - no need in reinventing the weel), about ISU or skating federation of Russia or even about TOTALLY ANOTHER SKATER WHILE SOMEONE IS SKATING.

I guess that was a huge offtop, but now you will never regret not knowing Russian, because as it is for you it's just meaningless babble, which is not so annoying (still annoying, but less).

That bad? LOL
To be honest, like half of everything they say is completely off-topic. Tarasova just loves talking about her experience as a coach, to the point where she forgets she's supposed to say something about the skater. It's so annoying, oh my god!
This time they were focused enough to talk about Deniss for a bit  They really liked his transitions and spins

Oooh, you feel me! I was so happy Tarasova wasn't there for men's FS.

Well, back to the topic, guys, I can make a text translation for that interview or a full-fledged video with subtitles. The latter is going to take more time, but you will be able to enjoy Deniss' speech and emotions)

That would be such a blessing for all of us who can't even say hello in Russian!!

Seeing Deniss's latest photos I understand why he fell in love with that place. I mean who wouldn't...
I hope they do a live Q&A soon like they did last year on facebook!

And lol I've always wanted to know what TAT thinks of some skaters, but I didn't imagine she would speak so much of her own past experiences instead of commenting about the actual skaters :laugh2: (she really is one of a kind haha)

TAT always sounds like she is speaking directly to the skaters - I learned 'maladiets' and 'ochen harosho' from listening to the commentary, but I had to look it up to make sure they were compliments and not admonitions!

I am very jealous of Deniss getting to live and train in such a beautiful place! Between his pictures, and the Shibutani's last week, it really does look like paradise!

Out of curiosity, are they compliments?
And do you or anyone know if Deniss's mother is living with him in Champéry?

Yeah, they are. "Molodets" is something like "good boy/girl" (a common compliment for good work) and "ochen' horosho" means "very good".

And no, instead of his mom, Deniss lives with Stephane, who is now, I guess, not only a coach to him, but more like his skating dad xD He makes Deniss go to bed early, checks his homework and even gives him cooking-lessons.

P.S.: Total off-topic, but how did you set an avatar for your profile? I'm kind of lost here.

Yes, they mean "well done" and "very good!" (I don't know that much Russian, but I know most of TAT's catchphrases )

Deniss's parents live in Latvia, so he rarely gets to see them. Stephane is like a surrogate father or as Deniss put it, "Supernanny"

Oh no, that's so sweet! I know his family lives in Latvia but for some reason I assumed his mother had moved with him to Switzerland, considering his age and that she's a FS fan too. And I remember reading about the extra cooking classes, but I didn't imagine it was due to Stephane being a full time dad / supernanny now :laugh2: That's absolutely adorable! I'm glad there's someone taking care of him off the ice too, and this also means one expense less at the end of the month, which is a big help for a figure skater of his age.

(how surreal this must have been for his mother though... "Mom I'm moving to Stephane Lambiel's house!")

You need at least 25 posts in order to be able to use one of the avatars from the forum's default list, and 100 posts to use your own custom avatar. Sadly there's none of Deniss in the list so Stephane will be reserving the spot until I reach 100 posts

Wow! Deniss has been added to the cast of Fantasy on Ice! :yahoo: Usually it seems like they only invite more established international skaters, so this is great. I'm thrilled for him! It probably doesn't hurt to have a coach who is in the show every year, but they wouldn't ask him if he wasn't an incredibly talented up-and-coming skater in his own right. And my understanding is that those Japanese shows pay very well, which will be a big help for him.

^^^I have often wondered what the shows pay -- especially the Japanese ones. Anybody happen to know?

Yay Deniss! He should get invited to all the shows, he's so much fun!

Will Lambiel be choreographing his programs for the new season? Maybe we can see a zebra costume...
