Deniss Vasiljevs

I agree with you all. Sure he was nervous but that does not mean his SS or ice coverage was any worse than the rest, the GOE for most of his elements but especially for his step sequence (even if he didn't get level 4) feels wrong, and the gap in PCS is not justifiable. (Laurine was also well underscored in PCS yesterday ). Even with bad camera angles, you can see how measured and fluid and graceful his movements are and to see his performance not get properly rewarded is infuriating.

In the end I hope Deniss himself isn't too disappointed and is able to go out and perform in the FS without any worries. :hap10:

I agree and I hope it doesn't make him feel frustrated enough to have it affect his Free Skate.

Run through of his FS:

He popped several jumps and looked a little frustrated in the beginning, but he comes alive in the second half :) I think he'll be ok tomorrow. I'm sure Stephane can motivate him to make his best effort. The judges are going to do whatever they are going to do, but I just hope he'll be satisfied with his own performance.

"Use the force, Luke"

He didn't look so enthusiastic during that runthrough, but its interesting to see a full version of the music - with slow jazz + a lot of jumps in the beginning, it looks like.

I count 3 places for jumps + an axel in the first section, an axel, a loop (guessing from entry), a 3lz-3t and a 2axel in the 'Anyone to Love' bit, a 3f (beautiful!) and a 3lz-1/2lo-3s and ending w/ 2 spins (I like that the only spin he didn't skate through was the cross-behind one he messed up on during the short)!

So that's 10 jump passes, obviously too many, and there needs to be another spin in there...I think that the second axel was taking the place of part of the step sequence so that he could practice again. Even so, assuming that both 3a go in the first bit, I see a lovely spot for a 4s right in the beginning there! Even without a quad though, this program will up his difficulty with a second 3-3 combination. 1/2 loop combos off of 3lz are really unusual too. He looked shaky on the landing, but I'm excited!

Can't wait to see him shimmying and really selling it to the crowd! :yahoo:

Chris Trevisan tweeted that Deniss lacked confidence. I know the first competition must be a little nerve-wracking, especially since he still doesn't have that much senior experience. But he still did a pretty good job and hopefully, his scores will only go up from here.

I think he did a good job for the first competition of the season. One thing I'm thinking about (and I wonder about others' opinions) -- Do you think it's possible that he's feeling that there are now a different set of expectations for him now that Steph is his coach? And maybe somehow that's getting in his head just a bit? I know we all remember his "I love to skate!" comment, and I want to see that guy!!!! Maybe I'm just reading too much into it. Could just be new season jitters.

Yeah, I thought he did great, considering it's early season... and not just any season, but the Olympic one.

I'd have to check but I think that excluding Shoma and Jason, Deniss was the only one today who was given PCS marks better than high 7s: he had some (low) 8s in there. So, that's promising.

This program has tons of potential. I can't wait to see Deniss get more comfortable with it as the season progresses. Today he seemed nervous and not as into the choreography in places. But, this is his first event of the season, and now he has somewhere to build from. This program will be amazing with more mileage, especially skated clean. Some jumps were tight today. The costume rocks my world!

He actually got personal best PCS, so he's starting off the season on a good foot! I'm more worried about Deniss' internal perfectionism, than expectations for him because of Stéphane. Hopefully by this point they have gotten used to the dynamic of having a coach who is so well known and is still skating at a higher level than the student (see Stéphane's 4t-3t over the weekend). They certainly seem happy with each other.

I wonder if Deniss' growth spurt is part of the problem, because his jumps and spins seem a little off balance - but maybe, like his manager said, it was just needing confidence.

Ah, interesting! Doesn't surprise me that he's a perfectionist!...Glad you mentioned the growth spurt. I kept looking at him and thinking his legs looked even longer and possibly he has more muscle mass.

Well, overall very good first outing. I know his programs will only continue to get better and grow as the season progresses. He and Steph in the Kiss and Cry is always a treat!

the best thing is his raw talent, Stephane by the boards and amazing vehicle this FS is. Stephane will push him and his talent further and this program will become a signature, oozing with suave and charm. Just not double-questioning or hesitating himself during performance. There is such a lovely, charming variety of Deniss' attitude - there's elegance, but also the cheekiness. Bless Ageless Stephane to deliver a fabulous material highlighting his pupil's abilities and challenging to bring out more:love:

Sorry I was completely distracted while I was in Bergamo... here is the photo album of Deniss from LT. (Credit goes to my dutiful partner for all the action shots)

I will upload the LP shortly... pity he didn't perform to his best, but considering it is just a beginning, there is no doubt he will build himself up as the season progresses. If anyone noticed the Toothless he was holding up at the kiss & cry after LP, that was from me, I am so happy he liked it!!! :luv17:

hi MGstyle:), thank you a lot for the photos! I hope you enjoyed your trip to Bergamo and Lombardia Trophy, Deniss especially. In some spare time, please share your live impression of both Deniss programs - we all saw that some jumps weren't there, but I'm more curious if he was so engaged into performance and interpretation as it seemed on TV screen. For me, he really progressed in those areas, gained even more elegance and smoothness in his movement:)

Thank you very much, it's great to see Deniss' performance from another angle (now I can see for example the core of his problem with 3F). And to hear audience's applause at last.
Congratulation to your partner who did better work that official cameramen ;)
And let me say how jealous I am that you could see the event live. Not to mention Deniss wonderful smile while holding the mascot given by you :luv17:
PS. Photo album is inaccessible for me :(

When I think of Deniss, I will always remember the young kid who charmed the socks off the audience at Boston Worlds 2016. He caused quite a stir, and he still continues to cause a stir! I'm sure he will take this season's programs to new heights as he becomes more and more comfortable with them. He'll get there with the quads. Better to not overtrain them and hurt himself. Another collection of phenomenal photos MG. :thank:

Indeed, he seems to be still in the process of working this program into his bones and heart. Once the program becomes totally his, I am sure this can only get better, by leaps and bounds. He also started slow last year, which was due to an injury but this time (hopefully) no physical problems involved, so the progress should be much more smooth. So I am not overly concerned, although I surely would have loved (or expected, convinced, should I say...) to see him on the podium!! You guys can also take a look at this album I posted on my personal time line, which mostly deals with Deniss and Jason  I also added some stories here and there in captions. @icetug do give it a go on this album. The Deniss fan group is public so I assumed it would be accessible by anyone but I guess it is not the case!

I liked the performances. Elegant and graceful! And his footwork and spins! He is so sweet! Sure he will brush up and improve all the elements and will show more confidence. But I'm a bit concerned about the jumps. At the Games the tension will be high. And the judges are going to expect his quads. Me too. I'm really eager to see the quads. I hope they will be perfect.

That Toothless was soo cute!!

Do you mind if I send the link of the SP video to Christopher? He was asking for fancams

I'm glad he enjoyed the toothless and thank you (and your partner) so much for the videos! I've been enjoying his programs and performance so much more than in the official stream, and now that I am not holding my breath for jumps, I'm really enjoying both programs. I'm excited to see how they develop over the season!

And here is the video of his LP!
I am afraid I made a few people around me go deaf with my screaming:party2:

There were some pretty loud "woos" :hap57: during the up tempo :party2: :dance3: section. Was that you? Such a difference when we can hear the audience. So much more fun!
