Deniss Vasiljevs

Deniss has been keeping busy lately, just a quick summary from the Facebook fan group where Jelena does a super job of posting updates: he filmed some sort of Olympic music video to be shown on LNT (Latvian station), held a master class, and apparently will skate in a show in Switzerland with Stephane and Diana tomorrow:

If you haven't seen the medal ceremony from Latvian Nats, you can enjoy all one minute of it here

And all of Wilma's great photos are collected here:

As part of the LNT report, Deniss gave a skating masterclass to Anastasija Grigorjeva (one of the athletes he was up against for Daugavpils Athlete of the Year)! Photos and a short clip on her instagram here https://www.instagram.com/p/BcW8YKSBJiA/

Edit: I just realised part of the caption says "he will introduce our country in Korea 2018" :eeking: I don't really think this is what she meant, but wouldn't it be awesome to see him at the front, waving the flag for Latvia? He'll be there anyway I guess, but still :)

Diana is doing a livestream on instagram.
I joined it late, but she said she might do a livestream with some other members of Team Champery (like maybe Noemie, or Koshiro). But it was a very decisive NO to doing livestream with Deniss because, quote: "Deniss hates phones. He is not from this planet".

:laugh2:
Hey, Koshiro and Noemie joined the stream!

Diana says Deniss's handwriting is beautiful... hers is lovely so now I wonder :luv17:

update: they're now doing a split livestream with Noemie too. And koshiro is in the comments, and they're saying the japanese phrases he taught them. this is amazing :laugh2:

EDIT: another update: The girls were comparing their handwriting (both of them have such great handwriting ), but they also said that Deniss' handwriting is BETTER than theirs, wow!
Is it a skater thing to have such nice writing?

Thanks for the heads up, I caught the last few minutes but missed Koshiro

I sent them a bunch of hearts in the chat at one point, they seemed surprised

Oh hey they're still going!

What's this about chocolate? Diana says Deniss forgot to pick some up (at Latvian nationals? or at the show?) so she picked it up and threw it (to the boards I guess) haha

Diana says she hardly knew any English when she came to Champery, she must be very good at languages.

Now they are talking about cakes and Celine is going to make a giant cookie tomorrow (!?)

--:35, Now it really ended, because Celine had to go home. That was so much fun.

He is in the Olympic team but the question who will be a flag-bearer has not been discussed yet. It would be nice to see him with the flag, but don't think it will happen.

Deniss updated his instastory a minute ago :rofl2: Saved here
Where does he keep finding these things!? If he uses that for his EX I won't be able to stop laughing

Also here is another article about Deniss: http://www.la.lv/starp-starmesiem-skolu-un-phjonchanu/

Edit: and he made a cake for Diana's birthday! Saved here. Wow! And he piped little buttercream swirls on the top
I suck at piping so I'm easily impressed lol

Deniss has arrived in Japan for XOI, and there was another pic of him on Tatiana Volosozhar's instastory, on the ice by a Christmas tree.

LTV documentary featuring Deniss: https://ltv.lsm.lv/lv/raksts/13.12.2017-musejie.-dokumentala-filma.id113114/
I think it was filmed at the same time or just after the last Sporta Studija video on youtube, after Worlds. He speaks Latvian for some of it, but a lot is in English too. (I thought it was the LNT video but it's the wrong TV station, silly me :palmf: )
I feel a bit like I'm spamming this thread, 90% of the posts on this page is just me :slink:

I don't have anything to add right now, but I want to thank lavenderblossom for sharing all of this with us in this thread. All of it makes me smile. Spam away!!! :thank: ;)

Interesting... he seems lonely.

Anything about Deniss is not considered spam for me :D

It's interesting how Stephane said Deniss wouldn't get along with other kids. I remember an interview when he was still junior, he was asked if he had made many friends in competitions. His answer was somewhere along the line "most of them are only acquaintances to him, except for a few people". That answer sounds a bit lonely to me? Maybe Deniss is a bit of a loner himself and only becomes close to a few?
We got to see Deniss being mad! I'm actually glad to see this part of him. It's not that I want him to be frustrated like that but it's because that expression is something I haven't seen before, and it makes him more than just a smiley kid to me :v It also proves his desire to master those quads, which is important to be competitive.

He said in the Sporta Avize interview
Do you have a friend you communicate regularly?
Because of my lifestyle it is not possible to foster good relationship, but I have one friend I trust and rely on.
I took it at face value before, that it was because of his lifestyle. But now I think what you said is closer to the truth.
He seems to spend a lot of time thinking and studying various things, I wonder if he is the kind of person to overthink a bit. Yulia said talking to him was like talking to a Nobel-prize winner. Perhaps a bit introverted, too.
Deniss being angry didn't surprise me, although we hadn't really seen it before (he was pretty mad at himself at RC after FS and COT after SP, though).

I wondered earlier if it might actually be better if Deniss jumped in at the deep end regarding quads and went for 4Lz instead of the 4T and 4S he's been trying in practice. 3Lz to me looks like his highest jump, and I can't recall the last time he popped it. Like here: https://youtu.be/JkebakA8HB0?t=4m8s When he gets it right I think he has more than enough height.

I have been wondering that myself too. To me, his 3Lz is his best jump, has highest success rate and height. MAYBE...he should go straight for that 4Lz? But if that's the case, Stephane might have let Deniss do it that way, instead of starting with 4T and 4S?
His jumps' height is adequate. To my eyes, the problem Deniss has right now is that he doesn't rotate fast enough for a quad. He is like, being stuck in that strange zone between a triple and a quad. But I guess that's expected.

Back to Deniss' personality! I agree with him being the type to overthink. That can be a disadvantage when making friends, too. His mind may not sync with other teenagers well. And he seems to enjoy studying and thinking too, which may stop him from spending time socialising.

On another, totally unrelated topic, I stalked FB page of Deniss' school. It seems that his school is the second best school in Latvia. The first place goes to some school in Riga. Just wanting to share this interesting info :D

I also want to thank to Lavenderblossom for active posting. If the others are not so active, it doesn’t mean that they are not active visitors and readers.

I also think it is very interesting to see Deniss different-this time mad and the way how tactfully Stephane tries to comfort him and teaches to keep a cool head. Well, the champions are not created in an easy way!

I remember Gruter’s story how impatient was Steph when he didn’t succeed in doing something-he was ready to quit once a week!

But to my mind it is easy to understand Deniss.

If we think a bit, then it was the end of the season. The scenes in Champery were taken in April after the World’s. He was exhausted. The whole season he was training and studying, training and studying!! Can we imagine how it is to pass all tests and an exam well not going to school? I couldn’t do it for sure!
He is (and was then) very young, we can even say he is still a teenager. Young people are hot-tempered, passionate and impulsive.

And let’s not forget that he is away from his family. If a kid has so loving and caring parents, but he almost doesn’t see them, it must be very difficult. Ok, if you can’t train in your country, then it’s the best way how to arrange the things indeed. He lives under one roof with somebody he likes very much and who really likes and takes care of him, but still it’s not his home. At home dear Mom would do a lot of home chores, but in Champery he has to do it himself. It’s not easy for a young boy.

And one more thought. Deniss is an extremely talented guy. It seems that he can do and get everything he wants. And all of a sudden there are these damned jumps he can’t do! And it can cost a lot in his career. I’m not surprised he is mad.

Nevertheless Deniss is a sociable and amicable boy. He is open-minded to all crazy stuff. It’s seen in the pictures where he is with Koshiro or anybody else. Yes, his philosophy makes him different from the others, but it makes him so interesting, attractive and lovable at the same time.

And the last but not the least. I’m sure if it is possible for Deniss to jump quads, he will do it. And i hope that Deniss or Stephane might take into account your reflections on the quads. May be you are right.

It did make me feel a little sad for Deniss, at the same time as I was grateful for a documentary that is more real than the usual puff piece. I liked seeing how Stef responded to Deniss’ anger with firmness and patience.

Putting it together with the piece for tv last spring, it sounds like at that point, working on quad sal had thrown off his jumps so he wasn’t even landing triple sal. And no wonder Stef said he needed a vacation and to get away from the rink!

People who have high expectations of themselves and demand a lot of themselves can sometimes have a hard time letting go and relaxing. When you are so used to counting every second of your time, it’s not easy to stop. And most teenagers don’t have those kind of goals, so it isn’t surprising that Deniss would have a hard time making friends. He does seem to be socializing with Koshiro now, though! Hopefully it was burnout, then, and Koshiro wasn’t too offended.

I really enjoyed hearing Deniss speak Russian to his classmates, and I wonder what he was saying? I’d only heard him speak English or Latvian before, and it’s interesting to hear the same speech patterns in a language he is fluent in.
