Bulgaria's golden couple Albena Denkova and Maxim Staviski, who won their second consecutive ice dance world title last month in Tokyo, have decided to postpone their plans to retire from competitive skating.

"We don't feel so tired after the world championship, so I think we'll be able to compete again," said 29-year-old Staviski at a news conference in Sofia on Monday.

Staviski, whose resemblance to Real Madrid midfielder David Beckham made him a big crowd favorite in the Japanese capital, added that winning the world title "wasn't that difficult".

The 32-year-old Denkova was more cautious about their future plans, saying: "Many people, including our coaches, urge us to stay on the ice but we can't say anything concrete now

Interesting.

The plot thickens! since when did ice dance become the most exciting discipline?

Pretty soon, Navka and Kostamarov will announce a return to competition! (Since they are technically still eligible)

Geesh, no wonder athletes try to avoid that topic from time to time. It hardly ever seems to stick / stay true when the "top" athletes say "retire."

Well I am glad if they do in this case. I love those two. S/Z? What are their thoughts???? MK is probably going to come back and kick butt too!

Why even say it?

S/Z are definitely not competing in the near future. They haven't completely closed the door yet for 2010 Olys, but from a couple of interviews I read, they realized another run for OGM is a very very remote possibility.

As much as I adore them, I don't want S&Z to come back for 2010. They had such a wonderful season and ended their career on such a high note. They could not ask for more. I don't want them to come back to suffer a devastating defeat in 2010, and I think they are smart enough.

Look at the ugly ending of Russian pair Pet & T and the polish couple at worlds, it's not pretty.

You make a very good point.

Yup, even MK and Fumie had the same fate. Both of them basically ended their careers on a sour note. I seriously can't understand the obsession of some MK fans' desire to drag her back. I mean, technically, she is so outdated, there's almost zero chance for her to medal at international stage.

MK is already a legend. For her to come back and face the ultimate defeat is only going to damage her lasting image.

Some Kwan fans are really living in a la la land as they are actively debating details on how a come-back-MK can defeat Mao and Yu-Na with a newly mastered triple+triple combination.

Shen & Zhao are lucky partly because pairs technique has not really leapfrogged over the past few years.

i hope that they do come back. Denkova and Staviski awlays did somthing intersting and i liked thier look on the ice. Knowing that they are a off-ice couple makes this team even more likeable. As for Shen and Zhao, maybe it's best that we remeber them the way they last left us. In perfection.

Albena Denkova has accepted a position as chair of the Bulgarian skating federation. I would be surprised if they decided not to retire. I think Maxim Staviiski is the one who wants to keep competing, and Albena is the one who is not so sure that's a good idea.

See, I'm one of those who likes the fact that she did this--an athlete representing the athletes.

Let's replace them all with the recent retirees! Starting with Octavio Chihuahua. I say Silvia Fontana replaces him.

Well they haven't decided anything for sure yet. But i think they'll definately skip next year (they want a break and to finish some urgent matters) and they ll return after that....And i would be very happy to see such athletes compete again:bow:

I love this team! Always have and in a way hope the do continue but there is no denying that age is Not on their side, as well as ( even though I find Him most attractive) Maxims weight issue, if they dont train as they should I have a bad feeling he might blow up like a baloon:(
Then not to mention the others comming up and showing they are on the same level as them. The dance is not like in the old days when if you won the compulsaries you win the whole thing and I think it frightens them a bit with the past two comps.
That said, I would still Love to see them skate again,, maybe just not in comp.
