Elena Radionova

Really cute pic of Lena and Anna P.
https://instagram.com/p/BBSUx-wwYfA/

I have found myself annoyed with posts both on GS and Facebook trying to paint Lena as a sore loser after Euros. She seems to largely get on well with other skaters and many people who have met her have talked about how sweet she is. It is so easy for people to judge someone else. It is unfortunate that the ISU constantly wants to put these skaters on display during competitions instead on letting them deal with their sadness or disappointment in privacy.

That was a really cute pic! And I thought it was sweet that Anna called Lena "beautiful." :)

I agree that the secondary K&C can be really painful to watch when skaters are disappointed...but then again, Lena & Liza cuddling in the secondary K&C during Worlds 2015 was DEFINITELY one of the highlights for me, so I can't say it's all bad!

Yes, Lena's not always an angel. Yes, PERHAPS Lena should use some of those acting skills when she's upset. *I* personally have no issue with Lena's disappointment/anger, because that's how I feel, but it is really disheartening to see her getting attacked like this. :(

But then, I am also reminded of this interview with Lena's mom:

Lena has a strong personality, she says. "She can even be rude to you sometimes, but soft and weak people don't survive in the sport". Lena is very straightforward, she says, and that can cause her some problems.

I think this is exactly what is happening now...

I had to change it a bit, because the Neck was creepy long.

I'm glad the author modified the photo; it does look awesome now! :agree:

Ok there are a TON of Lena updates for today.

1) First, an absolutely STUNNING photo! Seriously, I need a fainting emoticon! :drama:

4) Quotes from Ilya Averbukh
http://www.sovsport.ru/gazeta/article-item/879839
At the European Championships, Russian figure skaters took the entire podium. Is there a chance to take the entire podium at the World Championships?
- The entire podium at the World Cup: we cannot count on it. It is absolutely impossible, because [there will be] a strong team from Japan…The duel between Medvedeva and Elena Radionova will continue at the World Cup. I am sure that Radionova exactly will fight. I have great respect for Lena. She's a real fighter; she has everything to be a world leader in women's figure skating. The main thing - do not lose shape, and not to the accumulated fatigue played a cruel joke. We Russians have a good chance for the title of world champions. Another proof - the final title of the Grand Prix, which was stronger and there Medvedeva won.

Again, I'm somewhat surprised that he still is talking about Lena and Zhenya like they're equal contenders for the gold. I guess he does really love Lena!

5) Maria Butyrskaya also shared her respect for Lena:
http://rsport.ru/figure_skating/20160202/893491595.html
The first Russian world champion in the women's figure skating, three-time European champion Maria Butyrskaya told the agency "F-Sport" that at the European Championship in Bratislava she was more worried about Elena Radionova than the other Russian skaters...
"At the European Championships I was more worried about Radionova, because over the summer she grew by 10 centimeters. I know what it is, often girls can not cope, and she coped, for that I have deep respect for her. I know in which "analysis" Lena was early in the season, she had a very strong desire to work hard and together with the coach to collect herself like this. Medvedeva is yet to come, as she skladnenkaya, small, thin, easier to give her everything, "- said Butyrskaya.
"But they are both unique, cool, light, beautiful, with jumps, with a good glide, with interesting programs - with all that is necessary today in figure skating," - added Honored Master of Sports.

Well, actually Lena didn't grow much taller over the summer, but I think Butrskaya's point is right--it's really impressive that Lena has been able to hold onto her jumps despite growing a lot and filling out. :agree:

6) Great fan art

7) Phone case inspired by Lena's new dress--even Lena commented on it!!!

And some interviews [via GoogleTranslate with some best-guess edits from me]

http://rsport.ru/figure_skating/20160202/893465700.html

About quads:
"The work has to be a lot of different elements. I do not know, you can try (in the future) quads, but you need to be prepared not only physically, but also psychologically. I think it's very hard to do psychologically. It is difficult to adjust to the jump. But while I improved in every aspect, I know I can skate better, " said Radionova at a press conference.

Elena Radionova: On the ice, never shy, but in real life – was

At the European Championships in Bratislava Elena Radionova repeated last year's result, finishing second. In an interview with Sovsport.ru the skater told us why she skated in a new dress in the capital of Slovakia, shared her musical preferences, and even admitted that she is not playing on the ice, and the lives - and wants to learn French.

"I managed to get used to my new body"

Q: Lena, at the European Championships you skated the free program to the music of "Titanic" in a very beautiful new dress.
A: The old one was a little small. Anyway I wanted to change it. I really like the new one - it's such an evening gown. In "Titanic" were mostly rich people, which is why we had such an idea.

Q: You didn't do it to change your luck?
A: No. Just wanted to make a new dress - that's done.

Q: It seems that you grew slightly after the Russian championship.
A: Honestly, I have not measured my height recently. But some new feelings I have.

Q: As a child dreamed of all children grow up quickly?
A: When I was little, probably just grew and grew. This, like so quickly, it was not. I enjoy every moment. Maybe a couple of years ago there was a feeling that I wanted to become an adult. But now, somehow I have an absolutely calm attitude to this.

Q: You are growing up and are spoken when older, often fly in a dream.
A: I do not fly (laughs). Probably just the nature of change. For me the main thing - that it was easy to skate.

Q: And it became harder to skate.
A: Of course, not like last season. But I'm getting used to the new body. And, in principle, I believe that I am doing it.

"I do not want to skate to 'Carmen'"

Q: At the European Championships it was heavier [harder?] than the championship of Russia?
A: I do not even know. Still, probably quieter. There was a festive atmosphere. In the championship of Russia I felt that everything was very tense. And then calm. And I was quieter.

Q: Maybe because the competition is less, and no one except the Russian girls on the podium to get an objective could not?
A: That's what I thought. I thought, how do I skate clean programs.

Q: Here personally I know skaters who want just to think, and they still stand in front of the eyes.
A: I rarely think about the places I live program. That is, of course, I want to win the Olympics. But I do not think about it. Now I have other performances, and prepare for them.

Q: In the short and free program, you skate to songs [with lyrics]. Music with words was only allowed recently. Previously, did you think you wanted to skate to a song [with lyrics] - and you could not?
A: It happened often. My coach always had a lot of different ideas about the use of music with words. When it was finally accepted - a huge plus. Already, it seems to me, as many tunes and well known, and unknown, used in figure skating, you need to expand.

Q: Some experts say that the words sometimes distract from the skating.
A: I do not think so. Notable programs are excellent no matter if they use music with lyrics or music without lyrics.

Q: What types of programs do you enjoy?
A: Unique, innovative, new, interesting.

Q: Yuzuru Hanyu program under Chopin. Net choreography, classical music - and no special effects.
A: Hanyu is a master of his craft, he can skate to any kind of music, and all will work out.

Q: Do you have a dream to appear in any known manner - for example, "Carmen"?
A: No, "Carmen", it seems, everything is used. Of course, this is cool music, but I do not want to repeat it.

Q: So you probably also heard the joke about a list of works that should be banned from figure skating?
A: Yes. "Bolero", "Phantom of the Opera" and "Carmen". I want to do something non-standard. To make it interesting.

"Especially not portray emotions"

Q: Lena, in one of your "Periscope" broadcasts you said that you have the desire to become an actress. A "Periscope" a little help this desire to be realized now.
A: I really see myself in the future actress. I like that, I would like to try myself in the acting profession. But in the future. Of course, I do not know how to continue the rest of my life, but I think you need to try all. But "Periscope" is not to blame. "Periscope" - talking to people, rather than acting.

Q: Do you act when you skate?
A: Hard to say. When I skate, I transfer all the images through. I never act out some specific emotion. If I want to smile - I smile. If I would like to do something else - I do it. I skate from my heart, and I do not think that in a place I need to portray. And I have not specifically studied [how to do this], it has always been so.

Q: I heard a saying: if you come into the jump in the way, get out of him lying on the ice.
A: No, I did not agree. If jumps turn out fine, the machine is all happening. And if anything, they can get out of any situation.

Q: One day shy of the public?
A: On the ice, never; I think I'm never shy. I like it, I myself in this very well feel like a fish in water. But in life, may have been embarrassment.

Q: In life - in the sense of fellowship?
A: Yes, it is true, been a long time, but it was something.

Q: When you skate, do you ever think about the fact that millions of people are watching you?
A: No, I never had such a thought. Of course, I see people in the stands, who came to cheer. But I do not think about a million viewers.

Q: For you it is important that the stadium was full? To breathe, he lived as a living organism?
A: Of course, when a charged atmosphere, skating nicer. This positive atmosphere.

Q: When announce your way out the words "Elena Radionova, Russia", something clicks inside? Here it is, my finest hour?
A: Yes, but the idea of star hour does not come to mind. This is a signal that this is it, there will now be four minutes, I will take pleasure in my skating. Of course, it's not as easy as it sounds. But if you do your job well, it all turns out well. But do not think about my popularity.

Q: Are not you recognized on the streets?
A: No. In our country, and so a lot of the characters (laughs). And I'm still not so popular, that I learned.

"I want to go to Paris"

Q: What comes to your mind when you hear the name of the city of Boston?
A: It is beautiful there. There are many universities. I've never been there, I want to go there. And, of course, I want to perform well there at the World Cup.

Q: You generally like America?
A: Yes. I recently vacationed in New York. Very interesting town, people have a very different mentality. But I do like to travel, to learn how to live in different countries.

Q: In New York City special power - say all who go there.
A: Frantic pace of life. Moscow, of course, too noisy city, but New York City, Times Square - it is something. Everyone runs somewhere in a hurry ... Fancy had feelings.

Q: During the competition are you able to see the city where you go, or is it more like a short trip?
A: More like a short trip. Time is short. Sometimes, of course, it is possible to go somewhere, but very rarely.

Q: Which countries are your favorite?
A: France, Japan. In Japan, however, I purposely did not go only to compete, but I like to go to France. Very nice, I like the language, cuisine. I was in various French cities, but never in Paris. I really want to go there.

Q: Do you speak French?
A: No. I really want to learn this language. But first we must find time to learn English. And then proceed to French.

I really liked what Lena said about not acting while she's skating. It's so true--Lena never tries to "put on" a certain emotion--she just EXPRESSES what's in her heart. It's so genuine, and that's why I find it so moving. :agree:

I guess we won't ever see Lena skate to "Carmen," "Bolero," or POTO! Is there anything you would want to see her skate to?

Why are there no more photos from the banquet??? I'm very disappointed.... :sad4:

Thank you for posting, Batsuchan! I love reading her interviews and hearing what other commentators have to say about her. It's nice to know other wonderful skaters (Kiira Korpii!!) admire her skating and are rooting for her, even if she doesn't win gold. Sometimes I wonder if I'm just so biased that I don't see all the flaws that other posters (non-Lena fans) keep pointing out. When I compare her skating this year to last year, I can see major improvement, even if I prefer her programs from last year. Anyway, I am super excited to see her perform live at Worlds. I regret not getting a ticket for the Gala, as I love her Imagine program this year, but I have to get fly back as I need to get back to work early the next day. Gooo Lena! I still believe you can be the next World Champion! And if not this year, then next year!

I am biased too. I admit, when I go to competition threads, I was a bit shocked to what they point out. I know Lena is not perfect, but her programs are not that hateful. I am not a fan of her programs this season too :D Good luck to her on Worlds!

I have to agree the above two, I don't see her flaws as much as non-fans do. As a skater myself, I honestly don't think her posture is terrible as some do, it's ridiculous. It's not bad at all. Also I love her arms movements. People call them "flaily" but I would say more flowy ;)

I have to agree the above two, I don't see her flaws as much as non-fans do.

Well, she has some, no question, and at the EC she was pretty nervous unlike before. You could really see it.
But she was still strong enough to outclass anyone ... but Medvedeva.

Elena has just a hard saison and to be honest, her programs dosent make it easier for her. She has a SP, a LP and an EX full with love/romance-related
stuff. And that is -to be honest- facking annoying.
You just have to consider what movie you are going to watch , a romance-related ******** or an action-movie ... if you are a teenage girl, like Lena, a woman over 40 or simply just gay, you maybe fine with romance, but the majority would prefer an action. The same is in figure skating. People want to see a Phillippe Candeloro and not some annoying heart-drama. And this year Radia is full with heart-drama. No, sirs, she just completely missed her audience.

For me the main issue isn't Elena doing ballads. It's that she chose ballads for ALL her programs (unlike last year when they were completely different from each other), so it all gets a little repetitive :slink:

I'm so glad to hear you enjoyed reading them Seruleane! It's too bad that you're missing the gala though! :sad21:

I can see major improvement as well. :agree: Honestly, last season when I showed one of my friends Lena's FS from TEB 2014, she was *shocked* that I was a fan because I'm usually super critical and nitpicky when it comes to ballet dancers, and it really bothered her that Lena seemed to have no neck.

This season, to me, Lena has done a much better job of keeping her shoulders down, and I think the costumes she has chosen have helped too. And honestly, Lena's high shoulders never bothered me that much because she usually keeps her face up and her "breastbone to the ceiling," as my ballet teacher likes to say.

Yes, perhaps she leans forward a lot when she does her back crossovers, but I wouldn't call her back "hunched."

Personally, my major complaint is about her arms. To me, it's not that she does too many movements, it's that her arms have no weight in them when she moves them. My ballet teacher always talks about "moving your arms like you're moving through water." It's not so much about moving slowly as it is about creating a sense of resistance, of tension--energy flowing from your back through to your fingertips. Lena can definitely work on doing this. The other thing I wish she'd do is keep her elbows slightly bent so that her arms are slightly rounded. She used to do this when she was younger, so I'm not sure what happened.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9wMJPoVn9mI

I have to agree the above two, I don't see her flaws as much as non-fans do.

Well, I see Lena's flaws, but I love her anyway! For me, Lena's positive qualities (her genuine love for skating, her sunny personality, how she skates from her heart) totally outweigh her negative qualities!

But I realize that not everyone is like this. For example, for me, if I'm seeing the ballet "Romeo & Juliet," and if the two lead dancers are giving unbelievable, passionate performances, I don't really care if the supporting cast is a little sloppy; I'll get swept up in Romeo & Juliet's story and have a wonderful time no matter what the other dancers do. For some of my friends, however, they will be really be bothered by the less-than-stellar people and it will detract from the overall performance for them. They would rather see a cast where everyone is quite good, but no one is stellar, whereas I would rather have stellar leads and a not-so-great supporting cast. Hence I love Lena, even though I can see the flaws, but I can understand why some people don't.

For me the main issue isn't Elena doing ballads. It's that she chose ballads for ALL her programs (unlike last year when they were completely different from each other), so it all gets a little repetitive

Yeah, I agree. I do absolutely love her "Imagine" EX, but seeing her improvise to "Single Ladies" for just 10 seconds reminded me just how great Lena is at upbeat pop songs. Like this one, if you haven't seen it already!

http://www.goldenskate.com/forum/sh...s-Euros-2016&p=1365732&viewfull=1#post1365732

Elena just stole the show. Whole arena was in the program with her. Last year, while watching her on TV I thought she is overacting too much, but this year watching her live was amazing. I think she is more matured now and has good lines and better posture. I also liked her dress more than the previous one. Some jumps looked a little bit out of the axis (I don't know the right word in English for it, sorry) but overall performance and impression was great. Standing ovation from many people including me.I could really feel something from her performance. For me she was better than Evgenia that night. Evgenia has really beautiful lines and posture, she is very elegant but the effect just wasn't the same like from Lena's performance. Beautiful spins and skating, but then fell on 2A. I think she should've been 2nd, it just wasn't clean. Lena was clean and beatiful too and should've been first. I know this is how the system works, I know it all. Just saying I really felt something from Lena's program more than from Evgenia's. JJust my opinion. And I get why Lena looked so upset. She put everything into her program and still didn't win, was second despite Zhenia's fall. And I'm not saying Zhenia wouldn't try. I'm sure she also tried really hard. Not really sure about the placement.

Yes, I always feel something from Lena's performances! And I do think she has improved her skating this year, as I discussed above. At this competition, I really noticed her great speed and ice coverage in the SP steps sequence. :agree:

I can't wait to see Lena live!
