Evan's Thoughts on Olympic Season

I wish him the best luck.
Evan is not necessarily my favorite skater, but I have tremendous respect for his work ethics, consistency, and his mental toughness.
Go even! :agree:

Yes, I agree - and it is also refreshing that he feels no need to put down his rivals and comes across as very humble about his success last season.

But I wonder about the fact that he is training with a ballet coach. What will become of his trademark arm movements?

Is he just going to hand Plushy the gold medal for arm flapping without a fight :p

No, no, no! No arm flapping! I'll be praying for "graceful armflapping," at least.

Very insightful piece about what he's been doing to get ready. Very realistic and focused - good to see him so happy and confident, too. Great mindset going into Beijing - and beyond! Each season he adds yet another layer to the skills he already has. I'm really looking forward to see all the pieces come together for him in one great season! I believe the skating world is in for a treat!

"How am I dealing with the pressure?" asks Lysacek, who in addition to his world title last season has two world bronze medals. "I guess I'm not placing it on myself."

Loved his answer. Sounds like a great recipe

so he's finally matured enough to know not to play that game? leaving that to Chan perhaps

I'm very thankful Evan and Johnny have both decided to take a different approach with the media... their marking their territory days were soooooooooo annoying.

Can't wait to see Evan's season debut...

I'm confused by your first comment as I've never known Evan to put down ANY of his competitors. The gamemanship with Johnny was more media driven as I recall with Evan rarely chosing to comment and when he did, nothing negative.

Youth aside Chan needs to learn to sometimes engage his brain before opening his mouth.

We don't have long to wait now for Evan's debut!! Thank goodness!! It's been a long time!

Evan is not my favorite skater at all, but I very much admire his seriousness to his work and his approach towards the competitions.

Evan sounds like he's in a good place. I liked what he said about working with a ballerina- that would definitely be uncomfortable for him! I hope it pays off and we see evidence of it in his programs. I would like to see more balletic arm-flailing.

2005/2006 he and Johnny played mouthy games in the media towards each other. granted it seemed Evan was always responding to a taunt done by the other guy, but I remember him coming off with some cocky retorts to provoke Johnny, too. Just never calling him out by name (unlike Johnny who'd just come right out and say it lol)

Thanks for posting! I have been wondering what he has been up to and how he is doing. I don't expect him to repeat as champion, but I just hope he skates perfectly at the olympics. Go Evan!

I tend to place more blame on the one who starts it - and let's face it Weir did nothing to help skating with his petty and pitiful sounding comments about Evan.
Sometimes I wish they just would have settled this like hockey players ;)

Oh, please. Evan made just as many petty remarks about Johnny and other skaters - he just did it in a slightly more sneaky way, without saying actual names. All his nonsense when Johnny was national champ about how if HE was the national champ, HE would represent men's skating the way it SHOULD be represented and show everyone how MASCULINE men's skating should be, etc.

And don't forget that it was Johnny who went over to Evan and hugged him congratulations immediately upon losing the gold medal to him in a controversial tie at nationals in 2008. I don't recall Evan ever doing the same the three years that Johnny beat him.

I wasn't backstage after Natls so I have no idea how different skaters reacted.
But I have no problem with your support and loyalty to Weir and think you make fair enough points.
I think it was toni who mentioned she was glad to see Evan looking ahead and let's hope Weir will conduct himself in a positive, mature manner as well this season.

Would be a refresing change on the forums if a thread re: either of these fine competitors would/could avoid bringing up negatives from the past which I think were more driven by the media anyway.

Both are hard working dedicated athletes who have "buried the hatchet" (to quote Johnny) and moved on. I think it's time the forums did the same.

Hopefully we can get this thread back on topic. It's a wonderfully refreshing peek into Evan's mindset going into the Olympics. I think his head in is the right place as he adds even more layers to his impressive skills. He's his own harshest critic on the ice - always demanding more and better from himself. I look forward to seeing the results of his efforts. Not too much longer to wait now! Thanking the  skate gods for that!

Thanks merrybari for your nice thoughts.
Was wondering - has Evan shown his new programs yet this season, or will the debut be at COC?
