Evgeni Semenenko

Zhenya took part in the first stage of the Russian Grand Prix.

Unfortunately he lost his shape after Panin Memorial due to illness.

In the SP he went for the 4F, 4S+3T, 3A. The solo jumps were brilliant, but the combo was just 2S+3T. And after that he fell on a sliding. He was only 5th after the short program.

In the FS he lowered his content to three quads. But he still opened up with a 4F and it was great again. All competition attempts of this jump are very well done so far. A 4T was also great but then he popped up a 4S again. The rest was somewhat clean. He moved up to second in the free and third overall.

Such an unfortunate competition. But it's OK, it's not nationals yet. A lot of time to recover. He was in a good mood at the awards ceremony.

I'm glad that the flip looks extremely good. He really needed a consistent expensive quad.

There's a new costume for the free skate, by the way. Already a third one.

Also of new, I noticed that Zhenya changed his boot. He is using Auras now.

Zhenya's next stage is in three weeks.

The 4th stage of the RGP is over.

Zhenya was very confident at the warm-up before the SP. He replaced the 4S that he popped at the previous stage and that sliding. Everything planned was very good including the 4F. He got above 106 and won the segment. The consistency of his flip is surprising. He really nailed 6/6 competition attempts so far.

In the FS he planned 5 quads and opened up with a 4F that wasn't as great as always but landed. Then a pop on the loop and a step-out on the 4T in the second half. The first 4T and the 4S were very good. The 3As and the non-jumping elements were also very good this time, too. He lost the segment but won overall due to the SP gap and higher PCS.

Unfortunately the loop continues not working at the competitions. That's a pity. The warm-up was nice. Probably he doesn't even need to add that 5th quad. He already has very confident 4F, 4Ts and 4S. Though I understand why he goes for that.

The awards ceremony was very fun! Zhenya was having fun on the podium with Grisha F and Mark K. After that, Zhenya got down and went to greet the audience. After more than half a lap he released that there was nobody next to him, Grisha and Mark had barely moved away from the podium. The announcer didn't know what to do and just said "Evgeni might compete in the short-track".

After the competition, Zhenya got an award. At the end of last year there was a fan voting "FS King-2023" by a big sports media outlet and Zhenya won it.

So the nationals are over.

Unfortunately there was no chance on winning gold after the lost combo in the short program. But Zhenya did "Adam": had FS of his life (he himself called it so) and climbed to the podium. He looked very shocked after the skate, like he couldn't believe what just happened. It was the first time when he really sold this Richaud's program.

Of course it's frustrating to lose the lead because of a random mistake. But I'm satisfied that everything else was good enough. He is really able to skate consistently with the 4F. After the free skate Zhenya was very happy with the medal he won. He was sitting in the green room for more than an hour!

By the way, Zhenya and Gleb are the only men who didn't miss the podium at of all their events. :)

Not a single nationals without a viral K-pop exhibition haha. https://rutube.ru/video/3ae71609277d1c5a756c57b8e0ca396a/?r=plwd
He even invited his friends Sofia Leontieva and Daniil Gorelkin to perform with him (they themselves didn't make it to the gala).

In a program it doesn't make any sense in terms of points, but in the jumping competition - why no?

Grigory Fedorov did this combo in the Russian-Chinese Games two years ago. But it was negative GOE and there are no protocols.
I do think it doesn't make much sense in terms of points, but it may do in terms of communication, as it would be a candidate to highest scored jump pass ever jumped? That sort of communication seems to affect global scoring much more than the reality on the ice, as we can see for instance with a skater whose PCS globally don't deserve 6s and who gets 9s all over the board, just in virtue of the Base Value of a jump he's never really rotated...
To sum it up, if scores were awarded fairly, he would never jump it in an important competition. If Russian scoring still aligns on same-old international biased scoring, or if Russian skaters gets admission again in international competitions, it would be an interesting bet. Let's not forget that either Evgueny Semenenko or Boyang Jin (who had maybe been robbed of a medal in PyeongChang already) was probably robbed of the Bronze Medal in Beijing.

I would add that Il Professore doesn't cease to excel in teaching Axel jumps.

There's a skater who lands 5 quads in competitions and gets 7s.

In general, skaters whose jumps are clearly stronger than their PCS and non-jumping elements don't get too high scores because quads are no longer something unusual. 16 of 18 skaters went for two quads in the short program at Nats. If everyone is clean, Zhenya gets second-highest PCS (Aliev is first deservedly).

The 4Lz+3A also doesn't seem too shocking as most top Russian men cand land it in practice. It's a bit of a shame Zhenya doesn't share his practice videos at all. Everything is posted by TV channels or other skaters.

However, I think he will try to do something unusual in a smaller competition in the near future. But it will probably be a 6 quads attempt again.

I would add that Il Professore doesn't cease to excel in teaching Axel jumps.
I wonder when see Zhenya's 4A.

4F (+4.03 GOE) that got the best solo jump prize at the jumping competition

Some videos from the stands:

1/8 finals

Semi-finals

Finals

Unfortunately no medal again. But Zhenya had a very decent performance and made it to the final for the first time. I think he wins a medal next time.

At least, there's a gold in the team again. And this time he was really carrying the team. He performed three times and brought about 1/4 of total points haha.

Zhenya was invited to close the Gala at St Petersburg Championships and he performed... Le Clown.

It looked very well. Even better then before.

And I instantly guessed what it means. Yes, Zhenya is bringing this program back for the rest of the season.

I'm sorry about Dune. It's a very good program indeed. I'm glad I was able to see the best skate (the Moscow stage) from the stands. But unfortunately there are so many Dunes this season which makes the program not stand out. Moreover, Le Clown is very difficult to surpass as that program is a real masterpiece.

This skate is everything ❤️

Zhenya has attempted both 4Lz and 4F in the SP of Channel One Cup.

Moving the combo to the 4F worked out. But the 4Lz didn't. It was just his second competition attempt of this jump. Honestly I have my doubts about his technique of this jump, but it looked pretty good in practice this time. We can only wait to see what Zhenya can build up to next season.

Short program
