Evgenia Medvedeva to train under Brian Orser

I just realised now BOrser has half of the singles' podiums in Pyeongchang Olympics.

Boss of figure skating and king of collecting national jackets

Why you keep questioning her own financial input in training abroad? She can afford paying Brian Orser from her own prize and shows money, at least this upcoming season, she can also have a sponsor behind her to pay off those expenses. I bet Russian Federation is not going to cover all those expenses. As long as she decided to leave the first thing she considered was money question. If she were trying to ask RusFed to cover all expenses they'd do everything possible to make her stay with Eteri or switch to Buianova as another Olympic Champion coach in Russia. As long as she had decided to cover all the expenses by herself they had no reason to not let her go abroad.

Good luck to her and patience to her fans.

BOrser always says that it takes almost 1 1/2 years before he can see results with a skater.

Now I only hope Eteri follows Evgenia´s example and stop the low shots show she had been putting on.

orser is not that expensive, guys. medvedeva ain't poor and javi was able to afford orser when money was super tight. if a poor javi was able to make it financially, a celebrated, gilded, and sponsor-showered medvedeva can, too.

loving that shade though... wishing the young 'uns LONGEVITY. good one. and 'eteri's taught me many a life lesson. i will always remember them' - that's also wonderful, subtle shade. sure she will remember how eteri's favourite pastime is dragging her students through the mud... take note, eteri! one can remain courteous and hold onto their dignity while also letting the other party know they've failed to conceal their rotten nature.

medvedeva's composure, manners and impeccable dignity are admirable.

Since rumour started there is no announcement for Wakaba. So i don't expect her to go now. Sad, i think she is the one who need Orser the most. But well, it's not the end of the world.

Yes it will always be a disappointment especially since this rumor had taken so much that I really believed that it was going to be true, so I hope it will prove to us that we were wrong and she There is no need to change coach to be at the top and she can correct her mistakes.

Returning to Evgenia I admire her even more and I'm happy with the decision she made to go to Canada and train with Brian Orser it's really a chic girl, I believe in this collaboration and I wish him all the best.

Welcome to Canada Evgenia!

Toronto is a great city. I lived there for 2 years. Lots to do, lots to see, lots to experience. Is it wrong that I sort of see this as when a young person leaves home and goes off to college? This will be Evgenia's chance to spread her wings and flourish out of the spotlight. Maybe what she wants is more freedom to be and has to move away from home to get it. At 18 a lot of us were itching to get out and get on with our lives. Later on you realize everything your parents did for you and think "wow I wish I'd realized that with freedom comes responsibility".

I wish Evgenia the best and whatever her future holds I hope she is happy and fulfilled.

What I want to know is how in the world Med managed to convince the Russian Federation to take the unprecedented move that many thought was impossible up till now, of allowing their top skater to switch coaches and train abroad.

Remember when Lipniskaia was trying to change coaches? That dragged out for months and she wasn't even trying to move abroad!

"Yes, now I will live and train in North America," said the sportswoman, "As for the change of sports citizenship, it's absolute nonsense." All the normal and sane people understand this perfectly well that it does not concern me. "I will live in Canada, I just have to change my place of residence for an indefinite period. "

"I want a long career, it is because of this that such changes in my life are taking place," she continued, "you do not know how much I'm feeling now, I have more motivation than ever before." I am not afraid of moving to Canada and I will not be uncomfortable there, I hope that my English will allow me to communicate normally. "

So confident, brave and extremely intelligent...what a girl! She saw the writing on the wall and made a break for it.

Wow interesting news... I guess now we will see Evegenia appear in more in IMG shows in north America. Best of luck to her...

Good for Evgenia, taking the high road. Someone else should have done likewise but not every 40-something woman is as mature as the typical 18 year old.

People are taking the decision to train with a non-Russian coach outside of Russia as an insult to Russia and an insult to the idea that Eteri is the best coach in the world ever for every skater at every point in their career.

That's exactly what's happening. Other skaters visit for camps and train full time in various countries around the world, including non-Russians in Russia, and it means nothing more than seeking out the best coaching situation for them. All the crazy talk about her switching federations springs from the same turning-her-back-on-Russia rumor mill, and it's not just coming from Russian fans. Some of what I've seen and heard reeks of wishful thinking from people jealous of recent Russian success in skating or opposed to Russian politics.

Eteri isn't a monster but it seems she hasn't grown out of believing the world should conform to her wishes.

Orser isn't a magical coach, and he may not be able to give Evgenia exactly what she wants but there's no harm in them trying.

Evgenia is an ordinary young woman who happens to excel in a sport she enjoys. She's no one's property; not Eteri's, not RusFed's. I suspect she's quite happy being Russian, just not so happy feeling pushed aside in her original training group.

This is just a girl changing coaches, she doesn't deserve to have her funding pulled as some folks seem to be hinting.

Why is longevity shade? Longevity is a normal thing to aspire to as a skater.

Maybe they learned something from that experience. Can’t say that it was handled well or a positive result for any of the parties involved and I’m sure they don’t want a repeat of history. That would raise a lot of questions about the federation and how it looks out for its athletes.

I wonder what will happen if Lakernik and BOrser both push up Evgenia's PCS and GOE.

They kind of cancel each other out don't you think. I don't think Orser increase ladies PCS or GOEs by that much to be honest, unless you are a guy.

At least Orser can potentially push for substance to Lakernik's inflated opinion of own nationality.

I am intrigued by the prospect of decent choreography avoiding posing and miming and such cliches, hope she can finally get a great program worthy of these marks. I am excited for her by this move... but does that mean Wakaba won't able to stay at the cricket club due to limited available spots?

Evgenia had a much more successful career at senior level than Yulia. That also helped alot I presume in persuading them.

oh it wouldn't be shade, in a normal situation and normal training environment... but none of ETERI's students have ever had any longevity.

All the hand wringing about the finances and poor ickle Russian money is seriously cracking me up something awful

I expected many things but well done, this nonsense managed to surprise me.

Zhenya will pay for Zhenya. I know some hate the idea she is successful but the young lady has two major sponsorship deals that right now, cover her needs. Add everything else and problem? What problem.

Evgenia doesn't want to be an Adelina or Yulia. She wants a long career, and she wants to develop her skating. She's learned a lot from watching her peers over the past several years - not only Adelina and Yulia, but Liza, Elena, and Anna have all had their moments of greatness but then have struggled and faded. Evgenia wants to fight not to be replaced.

She clearly loves skating and loves to compete. I have so much respect for her and wish her well on the TOUGH road ahead. Lord knows she would have it easier if she was from the US or Canada where there aren't dozens of little girls fighting tooth and nail to replace her. I want so much for her to have a long, wonderful career - I don't want her best skating to already be behind her.

I never really found it odd that Eteri’s students moved on after they reach 18. After all she coaches for Sambo which is basically a school program. Sure there have been personal issues and other dramas but what’s that got to do with me?

I think she basically coaches a lot of kids. What would be nice is to see is if Orser take Zhenya and help her continue her career. She doesn’t need to improve but rather just continue along and have a few good performamces. Yulia had struggles after Eteri but still gave us some memorable moments. I for one hope Zhenya can be the first to move on and carve a successful path for others to follow post Eteri. I don’t really think Eteri is entirely to blame for anyone’s career after they left her programs.

On a side note....I can’t wait to see her and Brian at Russian Nationals :)

It's clear that Eteri's specialty is coaching preteen and early teen girls. But that doesn't stop her from being bitter when students grow up and move on. It's smart for Evgenia to leave now rather than stick around and struggle.

Evgenia does need to improve if she wants to beat Alina and Eteri's other juniors, which I am sure she does.
