Evgenia Medvedeva

Annnnnnd...now we have those notorious squirrels again. They are spies for the skating opposition. If you had subtitles in her recent story it would be:

gray squirrel: *running after Evgenia sees him* I have been spotted! Retreat!
Black squirrel: Where are you going, corporal! Return to your post! —-Oh no! It’s the Tsarina! She sees us! We have been discovered! Abort the mission! Abort!

Now she posted the delicious looking strawberry breakfast bowl and a big strawberry. I am thinking she is giving us code, trying to send her fans a secret message. Let’s see...Lady bugs and strawberries...Lady bugs and strawberries...what could it mean? ;)

Well... They are both red... ;)

I like your thinking

Also, I didn't know different types of squirrels could co-exist in the same environment! I read that red squirrels tend to not like being around grey squirrels, but maybe the black ones don't care :P

Black squirrels are a subgroup of gray ones.

In Toronto, there are areas of the city with red ones (very different genetically), the black and gray ones, and even a local subgroup of white/albino squirrels in one park.

Hello to all Zhenya fans here! ;) Since there are no news about Zhenya, I want to talk and just speculate for fun. Right after her Olympic performance she said that she lost to Alina because of cheaper BV of her programs. How do you think she will increase it this season, and will she at all? What are all your thoughts?

Hey killvmaim! Welcome to Golden Skate! Post often and post long!

I think she would LIKE to increase the BV, but I think Brian will also focus on making sure she gets the max +GOE.

Like Mrs.P, I also think that they are focusing on getting max +GOE. But if they plan to increase the base value, they might do the following: put her 3-3 combos (and any other high BV jump) in the second half and do a -3lo combo. Since the new backloading rules have been enforced, I doubt that they will put an unneccesary amount of jumps in the second half, bc she would not get the 10% bonus for every jump.

Welcome killvmain

I think what you're hearing here is a reflection of Brian Orser's general preferred strategy...

Perfect technique and maximize GOE on the elements you have, and keep new elements in the wings until they are competition ready with positive GOE.

This was definitely the strategy for success for Javier.

Now, Brian definitely believes in letting his skaters take responsibility, and he's said that Yuzuru has pushed to introduce new elements (e.g. 4Lo) when Brian would have preferred he focused on other things.

But I expect that in her first season with Brian, coming off injury, Zhenya'll go with the GOE maximizing approach.

Unless there is an element that we haven't seen which was excluded last season, but that Brian thinks is good to go.

Welcome to GS, killvmain! :)

That's a very good question. I think for the short-term, they are likely to keep her tech and try to increase her GOEs in all elements.
However I do believe her plan is to upgrade her tech at some point, once she has built strong foundations in terms of health and technique. She's aiming for Beijing so there's no need to rush, but I believe she can make it happen ;)

Welcome! Post long and often! :)

It‘s a very interesting question you asked there. At the moment, I think the lutz edge is Zhenya‘s only problem. She could do 3Lz-3T combos easily (as she can basically put a 3T onto every jump) as we‘ve seen it time and again in training and warm-ups before competition. But with the wrong edge it‘s too risky and that‘s why she decides to put only one lutz in her FP and none in her SP, let alone put a combo on it. This is what hampers her BV the most, I think. I‘m sure that‘s what Brian and her are working on the most at the moment. Of course also on her axel and other jumps to increase the quality and make sure she gets really high GOE.

In the long run, she‘s aiming for Beijing so I‘m sure she‘s training new combos but probably won’t put them in her programs until they’re stable enough. I’m excited to see the first results after working with Brian in the new season! I‘m sure in some way Zhenya will manage to surprise us. She just always does. :)

Welcome killvmain!

Personally I think they will be working on her edge so that she can have more lutz jumps in her programs and a lutz combo.

Alternatively (or in addition) she could train a -3lo combo.

I hope she will start upgrading this season already, but it depends on Brian’s strategy too. I think with the rising talent from juniors and with many ladies trying to upgrade their tech (Bradie’s 3lz3lo, wakaba plans of 3A ecc ecc) she will need it soon.

My guess for next season
SP:
2A
3lo
3F3T x

LP:
2A
3Lz (maybe 2lz at the start of the season)
2A
3F2T2Lo/2T
3F3lo x
3S3T x
3lo x

I think these layouts are definitely a possibility! I doubt she'd go for 2Lz, a 3Lz with an iffy edge is still better than a double, I think. It may be risky to have both combos at the end, but I don't think it's absolutely impossible, especially if she has the chance to attach one to the 3lo should she fail.

I'm not sure she'll have a 3F3lo combo ready, but I'd be happy if she did (and, if she did, she'd really need a 3Lz in the SP to take full advantage of it). I don't think it makes sense for senior ladies to backload the combo in the SP, as they have no required solo jump and they could therefore attach it to another triple should they fail.

BV
3F3T x =10,45
3Lz3lo =10,8

It´s risky but she is very stable on the 3F3T.

My guess for next season
SP:
2A
3lo
3F3T x

LP:
2A
3Lz (maybe 2lz at the start of the season)
2A
3F2T2Lo/2T
3F3lo x
3S3T x
3lo x

I agree with your SP layout. I think Yuzuru also backloaded his combination in the SP, so Brian might agree with this plan.

In the LP I still have my doubts about -3Lo combination this season due to her injury, but of course I would like to see one! In case it is ready I think they'll put it in the beginnig of the program. Something like this:

3F3Lo
2A
3Lz
2A
3F3Tx
3Lo2t2Lox
3Sx
Now I know that she usually does 3s3T, but since she has to practice 3F3T for the SP, she could use it in the LP aswell.
It really depends on how quickly she has recovered and adapted to her new training situation. But we can expect at least no more 2A2T2T, please 🙏
