Evgenia Medvedeva

As I said I quite like her skating and I root for her as a skater. But I am well aware that some countries will use athletes as part of their propaganda, which is sad.

You can discuss the 'ebil' Russian propaganda and the usual here in plenty of other places, with plenty of eager participants. This is not what fanfests are for.

NBC TV Network: the advertising clip of Olympics 2018 | with Evgenia Medvedeva

I find it beautiful that they put Evgenia in a rather traditional looking outfit in front of a Russian church along with the words "no matter your home" :) Nice timing, like Evgenia's jumps
It shows that NBC supports the innocent among the Russian athletes and I'm happy they are not being treated as if they don't exist.

She’s named to the team as far as I know.

Why are so many people doubting that she’ll go? I don’t get it.
I guess it's natural because they are unsure about her being healthy enough to go.

I'm not really sure I believe the stuff about stress fractures taking a short period of time to heal. I know many runners miss entire seasons due to stress fractures. And figure skating is a high impact sport.

That's why, yeah. But there was a video where she comments how she'll compete at the Olympics even under the neutral flag (which means it was done after her injury), and it shows her do a solid 3Lo, 3F+3T and a fantastic 3S+3T.

So, she's mostly healed - the question is still if the risk of competing is too high. But if she's training, who's to say a competition has a greater risk of her injuring herself than a practice? And we know Eteri's girls do so much more at practices than at competitions...

And honestly, as her fan, I'm not sure I'll watch the Europeans live if she competes. I think my heart would stop watching that first 3F+3T and the last 2A - it did even when she was healthy :drama:

Stress fractures and shin splints take similar amounts of time to heal, but that time is greatly decreased with REST

We'll see. There's not a peep out of their camp that she might withdraw and time is ticking. Ten days to Ladies SP. They'd want time to substitute her if needs be so we'll know soon enough.

Yeah, that's true. For now all we can do is hope for the best. They know that if there's any doubt the Europeans aren't important enough and need to be skipped.

It's not so much the initial healing than getting back to usual form without the injury recurring.

Yes, both the form and stamina required, and that takes time as the increase in training needs to be steady and measured.

I think they won't send her if there's a chance she may lose, due to not returning fully to excellent form. One can always lose of course, such is the nature of sport, but if she's back to her previous form, or close to it, then she should be solid enough. If she's not close to that, I don't think she will go, even if physically fine because that simply gives too much to Alina, way more than in case of simply not going.

But why would she/they be so scared of Evgenia losing? :/ Isn't second place better than nothing? People aren't suddenly gonna think Zhenya's not a good skater if she loses to Alina of all people, especially when they know she suffered an injury.

The media is always blowing things out of proportion. Obviously they will act like her career is over if she ever finishs second. And Rusfed is notorious for their "treatment" of skaters when they have some downtime so yeah it's a big problem.

Why is it, though? Is it because she has only placed first in the past two years? So if she was second in one competition it'd mean she was second in every competition afterwards?

It's really hard to understand. Just about every other top skater has had poor skates, not placed first, then had amazing showings and placed first again without any issues. I too really can't understand why people think if Medvedeva was to finish second in a competition it would be some permanent switch as if she would never win again. It's completely normal for skaters' placements to fluctuate some and the same person to not always win.

Because she's the dominant lady right now. Because there're many many beings out there want her downfall, and they won't let the opportunity of badmouthing her slips by if it ever comes, especially in Olympics season when the attention is the highest. And Alina's pcs go from 70 to 76 in Rusnat ,uncalled under-rotations aside, says something about Rusfed tendency that worries me.

I pray that she does well. Her and Boyang had horrible injuries but apparently they're much better now so yeah it is a tad bit confusing but I trust their teams (fingers crossed). Also to share some lighter news. I noticed a few weeks ago that in Japan....whenever they write articles about her, they call her "QUEEN MEDVEDEVA" almost all the time. I find it so sweet that they show her so much support even though she's not Japanese.

Actually "Queen" or "King" is how they call a champion in Japanese so it's not as nuanced as you think. But their support is real, yeah.

The momentum could shift fully to Alina, more than likely internally as well as in the media. Ultimately the fed won't care which Russian skater grabs that gold, as long as one of them does. Doesn't mean they'd abandon Zhenya, as a 1-2 is always preferred but they could shift their primary focus to who they feel is a more stable skater at the moment. Olympics season is special anyway, way more games played. I think it's good for her that she does have her reputation of being a multiple champion, as that'll carry her partially on its own.
Anyway, doesn't mean she still couldn't win Olympics, even if she did lose Europeans but it'd be that much harder IMO.

And of course, there's also Caro at Europeans with her upgraded tech, and high PCS. I'd not risk it, but they'll weigh the options, I am sure.

Good info either way they always refer to her like that so it’s still pretty amazing. Also I have seen her tv interviews and they almost always call her “Ice Queen” in English.

I bet that some certain youtuber doesn't really like it :handw:
