Why is it, though? Is it because she has only placed first in the past two years? So if she was second in one competition it'd mean she was second in every competition afterwards?

It's really hard to understand. Just about every other top skater has had poor skates, not placed first, then had amazing showings and placed first again without any issues. I too really can't understand why people think if Medvedeva was to finish second in a competition it would be some permanent switch as if she would never win again. It's completely normal for skaters' placements to fluctuate some and the same person to not always win.

Yes, I think Zhenya has spoiled us a bit. Even geniuses like Yuzuru or Yuna Kim don't always win, on the contrary. Evgenia is the exception, not the rule, and I'm sure that sooner or later she will lose a gold medal too, and that will be okay of course. I hope it won't be OG though

Correct me if I’m wrong, but I think she herself said that she was not afraid of losing. I think that’s the best kind of mentality going in. It’s not wrong to lose, many greats of the past and present have lost many times and it didn’t diminish their legacy, it’s the media blowing it out of proportion that I’m afraid of.

Although I do admit this won’t stop me from being sad if we ever see her in second place.

Zhenya climed bit to bit to the top. Losing is something she has experienced, she must know the importance is self improvement. But fed and media's supports are much needed to stay on top nowadays, not just one's abilities, sadly. And they rarely show sympathy.

It’s so interesting and unique that Zhenya has had such a long gold medal streak, so I get why the media will blow it up bigger than it needs to be, as it will be a bigger story than if she wins yet again.

I admire Zhenya’s mentality so much. 16-17 must’ve been a tough season to come out and prove 15-16 wasn’t a flash in the pan year like other Russians before her. I’m sure she herself knows that statistically speaking, she will not get the gold medal at some event in the future, just like she has not won every competition in the past either.

As someone else already pointed out, I just want that non gold medal placement to be something other the OG (or even worlds, I want her to go three for three this year!)

Looking at her programs this year, I think the SP is magnificent, and I really like the FS too. Looking at it again though, the costume doesn't actually convince me too much. I like black costumes but there's something awkward in the shape. The Leftover's dress suited her much better in my opinion, the current one has too much going on and doesn't really enhance her figure. Not that it really matters in the end, of course!

I’m guessing it’s the black straps and the necklace thingy that make it look a bit crowded. Removing the necklace or making the straps skin color would improve it in my opinion. (Or both)

I do love the gloves tho, and they annoy the haters so two birds with one stone!!

Yes I think it's the straps+necklace, but mostly what I don't like is that the "bodice" goes on too long, well past her waist, and then the skirt is not very voluminous, so instead of creating a nice A shape, it seems a bit 'straight down' (sorry, I'm terrible at explaining this lol)

I do think the black dress looks nice and fit the program though, but yeah, the old dress looks really special and fits her figure more, especially the shape of the skirt and its color give some ephemeral vibes to her figure and it's just so beautiful TT_TT.

I think they tried to resemble the dress from the book to look more realistic but maybe that's not always the best option.

The "nightsky" dress fits "nocturne" more, and also beautiful . The leftovers dress does fit her "meditation" ex though, and it may fits her future programs. We could see it on her again, I hope TT_TT.

The momentum could shift fully to Alina, more than likely internally as well as in the media. Ultimately the fed won't care which Russian skater grabs that gold, as long as one of them does. Doesn't mean they'd abandon Zhenya, as a 1-2 is always preferred but they could shift their primary focus to who they feel is a more stable skater at the moment. Olympics season is special anyway, way more games played. I think it's good for her that she does have her reputation of being a multiple champion, as that'll carry her partially on its own.
Anyway, doesn't mean she still couldn't win Olympics, even if she did lose Europeans but it'd be that much harder IMO.

And of course, there's also Caro at Europeans with her upgraded tech, and high PCS. I'd not risk it, but they'll weigh the options, I am sure.

I don't really get this media and the feds are more responsible for the results than the skater themselves talk. Of course that Alina's PCS are increasing dramatically because of her winning streak (IMO, undeservedly - and I do like her a lot), but Evgenia's aren't just gonna drop down out of nowhere just because she'll have lost once, if she shows her usual pristine skating (not talking about jumps now, you can't really fake GOE on a badly landed jump). Or if you're so certain, maybe they might... honestly I don't know - has something like this happened before?

And I do think this wouldn't be SUCH a hugely unexpected scenario as let's say 2 moths ago - because she was indeed hurt, and she does have a damn good excuse of why she (in this very pessimistic scenario) wouldn't accomplish what she usually does.

Maybe she should have some experienced pr manager/adviser to help her construct more respectable public image and refuse those who just wants quick profit from her name.

Remember one thing though. With all this talk here about Evgenia losing an event to Alina, Alina has fumbled a lot in her SP this season and has had to play catch-up with her FS. So even a mishap by Evgenia might not cost her a gold. I like Alina too, don’t get me wrong, I am just making an observation from this season.

She won't drop down of no where of course. But if 2 of them all have clean skates. If she doesn't has enough fed support as her rival, the probability of her winning is way thinner or not at all. In almost equal situation, the one who's more pushed get more points.

She would still medal even if she uplaces second once but it'd be much harder to get gold again if her rival skates clean and fed decides to switch attention.

At least she promotes something related to her age and personality... last time she talked about anime, if I'm not mistaken, and she's very fond of it...And she's the image of Pantene, i wouldn't say she has a bad PR, on contrary... I know that the person who is the image of Pantene in another country receives a lot, but a lot of money. I imagine it's same in Russia.
