Evgenia Medvedeva

It was a much better effort. Will take time to adjust to all the changes. Remember she didn't jump for a long time after the Olympics and this will be a process Still great considering.

Such a shame she fell on that loop. I am realizing that this may be a tough year for her :(

I will be interested to see how the scoring is

Well, personally, I think that was a very respectable and positive outing for our lovely Zhenya. Was it perfect? No. Is there still lots to work on? Yes. Does it seem to be heading in the right direction? Also, yes.
In my head, I'm imagining her as back at a huge new beginning of her senior career. Who else remembers that little, foal-like figure in an awful costume at the Ondrej Nepala Trophy in 2015? I feel like it's that again where she's having to refind her feet (before hopefully wiping the floor with everyone later). She's had an incredibly tough 12 months but has remained her bubbly happy self who smiles rather than cries when it doesn't quite go to plan. Really pleased with where she's at, and happy that she feels confident enough to be jokey about it with Brian and Tracy - they're obviously not terrified. Good job, Jenny! :clapper:

P.s. It also shows how much the amount of time you have in the off-season affects the beginning of the season - I'm almost certain that Tennell competed her programme before Zhenya had one at all! (Not discrediting Bradey at all, she skated fantastically)

It's a learning year for her, but I am very hopeful. She looked healthy and ready to have fun and compete. Never thought I'd say this but I want her toosh!

Reading that interview posted in the Edge gave me even more indication that this is a girl with a sense of humor and a good head screwed on right. Was very glad that the largely Japanese crowd in the arena showed her lots of love tonight.

Ah... she's caught the silver curse. Second at Euros 2018, second at Pyeongchang, and second here (probably). But no fear. We march on.

Overall, my impression right now of the place Zhenya is at is that she's going through growing pains. She was great in the last few years, but now she's not yet become the skater she will be for rest of her career. She's still changing, we can see it in her 2as and nervousness. But her spins today impressed me -- she had a new position with one leg crossed over the other and her arms up and back that I really like.

This maybe isn't what we were hoping for, but I think this is what Zhenya needed -- a kind of reset, a recalibration.

The dress is the most beautiful she has ever worn. I think the program is abstract, interesting, and sophisticated. She has the nuance and grace to pull it off. I think it’s just lovely.

You can tell she’s just not quite yet in the physical condition she has been in the past. Quite winded at the end. It will take time to rebuild that.

I wish they got someone else other than Wilson to choreograph. Wilson hasn't been at the top of his game for at least a quad already. There's a reason why Hanyu doesn't use Wilson anymore.

I'm reading a book called "The Subtle Art of not giving a ...." You can guess what the last word is. I'm not too far into it but basically the gist is that when you stop giving a .... about losing, failure or struggle then you actually gain the strength to transcend into greatness. Zhenya showed some major examples of this tonight.

Onward.

P.S. I definitely know the pain of being a fan of a skater who went through tough times. I was a Shibutanis fan when people say they would be surpassed by other U.S. dance teams and would never get back on the World podium, let alone get to another Olympics/win a medal, after that "fluke bronze" in 2011. We all know how that turned out. :)

I have confidence in Zhenya.

She still got 204 even with her errors. That means that the judges clearly still believe in her, and that's good.
I know that Empress Evgenia will be back to take no prisoners soon. And I can't wait for it to happen :luv17:

You could tell by her smile right after the fall, and the way she was signaling to Orser after the program making the "so close" sign that she has the exact kind of attitude we want to see.

This has been such a massive change... coming back from injury, training in a new country in her non-native language, with a brand new coach.... working on correcting issues with her technique... it's a lot, and so many people would just crumble under the pressure.

But she's still smiling, still remaining positive... she and her coaches know that this wasn't going to be easy... there's work to do still. But the pieces are there, and it looks wonderful when she's got it all clicking.

I'm honestly really happy with what we saw from Zhenya here. I think by the end of this season we're going to really see a bright future for her.

2nd by just 2 points... a little sad but also proud after all she went through after the Olys. The fall made the difference here. That's okay though, 1st was clean and will be a major threat for a GP spot. As long as she can work through any issues that she had here, she'll be ready to go for the GP.

When was the last time Evgenia got less than 70pcs?

2015 Rostelecom Cup I believe - she got 67.61 (Previously that season 62.xx, 68.xx, then jumped up into 70s at GPF). Think it was fair though today, the team are obviously still fiddling with transitions (there were more transitions than at test skates but they took the axel transitions out) so that will have dropped that mark, StSq was quite laboured and not as fluid as we normally see which will have decreased SS, and she had an issue with the spin which will have affected edge quality AND it's a totally new style which will have affected all the performances aspects.

An average of 8.62 is hardly a disaster and the judges seem to be holding back this season as I think they realised they backed themselves into a corner at the end of last season with the PCS - Miyahara the other week only got 68 and no one can accuse her of having poor PCS skills

Like Brian would say: "It was a first pancake" And this pancake wasn't bad.

https://twitter.com/crazykuroneko/status/1043305781502697472 Brian's and Zhenya's faces

Yeah I'd still eat it

And  Med's face!

But dear me, there's a lot of doom and gloom predicted for Med right now, come one people we gotta be glass half-full people.

I love the Orange Sky SP so much, I'm sure Med can adjust to tango and kick butt with it.
