Evgenia Medvedeva

Nah. Orser been thru this kinda thing before.
With Adam Rippon, with Nam Nguyen after his growth spurt. Though we know it ended with them leaving Orser, its different with Evgenia.

Experience wise, this is 1st time they have taken a Russian skater, rather a non Russian coach have taken a Russian skater.

Surprisingly, the other new student Jason Brown is doing well so fast after the bad skate at Skate Canada. Circumstances are different of course but Jason knows how to handle it thus far.

Evgenia does well in practices, so its a mental thing.

I actually think Evgenia and Jason have been dealing with similar issues this season, but on a slightly different schedule. Jason struggled badly with his jumps and his confidence at his first two comps this season and then had a breakthrough. I think Zhenya is caught between her old and new techniques, and when she hesitates or doubts herself before jumping, she falls or messes up. I have faith that with a little more time, the new technique will become second nature and she will soar again. It clearly meant the world to her today to get so much support from her fans, and I hope that support will help carry her through the FS.

A big difference between Jason and Evgenia's trajectory is that Jason started the season with harder tech (they were still trying to open with that quad, remember?) and he's found his stability after dialing it down a notch in difficulty so he's more comfortable. I'm guessing because of the stiff competition they knew Evgenia would face at RusNats, they've tried to keep the difficulty high (until this new short program layout but this is very late in the game) or raise it even higher (in the case of the new combos she's planning for the long program). And that was in addition to dealing with multiple significant injuries. They started in similar situations but their technical needs aren't quite the same so she's had more of an uphill battle.

I’m hoping Zhenya has a clean skate tomorrow. Whether she competes again or not this season, a clean skate will give her a confidence boost and positive momentum heading back to training in Canada.

As Brian has said, his system takes 18-24 months to click. She needs more time to get healthy and solidify the new jumping technique.

I think actually what Zhenya is going through now is more comparable with what Jason went through last season, when he had a shaky season toward the later half of the fall and didn't make the Olympic team. Yes, there were some technique things that he contended with but until last season Jason had done fairly well under IJS and looked good to make the Olympic team, especially after helping Nathan secure three Olympic spots with a 93+ SP at Worlds the year before after enduring some major injuries.

He started out OK by medaling at his Challenger event and first GP but then things kind of went downhill from there and it was clear that by Nationals there was a loss of confidence and that a lot of the issues were mental. At U.S. Nationals practices he was basically hitting everything, even in the warm-up on the morning of the free skate he was doing fairly well with the jumps but then in competition, well we all knew what happened.

The good news is Jason managed to endure such a devastating result and get stronger from it and I'm confident Zhenya will do the same. And all, there's still the free skate. Anything can happen! The podium may be a long shot given the consistency of the ladies, but I still think she can come off with a positive ending.

The crowd at the SP were so supportive of Zhenya it was lovely to see! :)

I have to say I can understand Brian's surprise, I thought she was going to have a magnificent performance, she looked like she was in the zone. But what others have said about the pressure of the moment resulting in her mixing the old and new techniques makes sense. Once she gets the hang of the new technique it's gonna be awesome!

Sadly, I won't be able to watch the FS as it starts at 2am Aussie time, but best of luck to Zhenya! Skate with abandon!

Maybe I'm mistaken .... but Zhenya doesn't fall in the practice season pre competition ... so maybe is just her head who are trying to adjust to everything

I think it is more than head. When Mao Asada made technique changes to her jumps the commentator and the coach explained that it takes time and not instant. And they explained that practice is different from competition that when pressure is on the skater more likely to be caught between two techniques. It just takes time.

For someone that helped her to get better - this is very harsh.
Evgenia actually improved from last Season. She just fails to show her improvement in competitions, which is very bitter for her, but that's just the way it is now.
Other skaters have faced similar issues and came back stronger afterwards. Didn't Elizaveta just had two bad Seasons?

I think she imploded. Why not say it like it is? It can only go up from here. That SP was bad, really bad jump wise so the other things won‘t save her even though some improvements were clearly shown. But overall, Doug was right. It was hard to watch and I‘m sure it was hard to skate, too for Zhenya. Now let‘s hope for her to find her mental strength and confidence again. But patience is needed and I know we as her fans are capable of giving it to her and supporting despite being stressed out by this whole situation. :)

To me, this sounds like "urgh, how disgusting, who wants to see that?". But maybe, I got it wrong.

So is it better for Zhenya to compete in other B events this season or stay in Canada and train for 2019-2020 and hope she gets her confidence back?

I agree that is harsh. And Liza had 3 bad seasons.

Based on how much Doug enjoys diminishing the accomplishments of other Russian skaters, and how readily he goes to suspect outlets like TSL to gossip about Zhenya, even before he started working with her and was only going off second hand info, he’s a snake and I would not trust him. Methinks he enjoys attention a little too much for anyone’s good.

I think both? To train in Canada but also go to minor B events plus something like Team World trophy or Universiade. Just hoping she will get her confidence back won‘t make it happen, necessarily, she has to actively work on it and I‘m sure she‘ll focus on doing the right steps.

What I meant by hoping she can get her confidence back and having patience wasn‘t meant for her to disappear and only come back in 2019/20 but rather for US to hope and be patient despite seeing her struggle. I don‘t know, maybe I stated it wrongly... :)

I agree that is harsh. And Liza had 3 bad seasons.

Yeah, looking back at it I can see how it could sound harsh especially with the stressing on her past achievements... I took it differently originally like: “wow, that was hard to watch but hopefully she‘ll one day find her confidence back“ but I‘m not a native speaker so I might have missed the original intonation reading it the first time.

I want one more competition this season. Because she really has the whole package, she just needs to deliver a clean sp and the long will follow. Then end the season. And I hope she gets to go to Moscow from here and spend a week with family.

Yeah, I don't think Doug was slamming Zhenya I think he was calling out TSL for posting the video because the social media exposure makes it harder for her. (Though that in and of itself is a little obnoxious given the comments Doug has made on that show about Liza).

In any case, best of luck to Zhenya tomorrow and in the future. I still believe in her!

Hmm - not sure how closely you follow Jason? I agree that their tech needs arent identical, but his issue at the beginning of the season wasn’t primarily the quad but the fact they were fundamentally redoing technique on all of his jumps. He has described in several interviews split second hesitations/falls/< as he struggled not to fall back into the old way of doing things.

I've been following Jason pretty closely. I think starting out with the quad as an opening jump contributed to his issues (I didn't say it was the cause of them or the only one) because it got him started on the wrong foot. They figured out that it benefits him to start with something he feels more confident in. It's a part of the overall strategy not the only aspect of it. But this is Evgenia's fan fest, not Jason's so let's not derail.

I think Zhenya wouldn‘t mind that we‘re talking about Jason here for a bit if it‘s not too much, they‘re good friends after all. ;)

And it‘s interesting to compare their situation because to me it seems, while not completely alike obviously, still quite similar. New coach, disappointing last season (in different ways but still... despite Olympic silver being a WONDERFUL achievement, I still think Zhenya was quite disappointed by not winning gold), new country and new technique with the problem of falling back to old habits. The only advantage Jason is that he has more time than Zhenya, competition in his country isn‘t as cut-throat than it is in Russia for the ladies.

And I do not actively follow Jason, only once in a while and got to pay more attention to him through Zhenya in the first place so I appreciate people who have a bit more knowledge about him tell me some infos. :)

Alright. So it turns out I converted the time wrong. I thought the SP was tonight at 3 a.m. my time. Imagine my surprise when I checked my phone after finishing my finals...

I have not read through the last several pages of this thread, and I'm not sure if I intend to.

But if I know y'all I know that even if you didn't post saying so, we're all a bit doom and gloom on the inside right now.

Therefore, the time has come for "Zhenya Memes and Other Positive Zhenya Content" episode 2. I have been stockpiling for a while.
