Figure Skating in Cyprus

Just 4 days after her FS at the Amber Cup, Oliviia will be in action today at the Santa Claus Cup in Budapest, Hungary.

The Advanced Novice Ladies SP is due to start at 16:11:00 CET (15:11:00 GMT / 17:11:00 EET / 18:11:00 MSK). So 10 hours from now.

Oliviia will be the 16th skater to start. So, fourth and middle skater to go in Group 3.

And that is as much as I can tell you, because the Time Schedule PDF's are not working.

But, those times may change if somebody that is due on before her withdraws.

Santa Claus Cup Advanced Novice Ladies SP: Results; Protocols

No video uploaded yet 😞

Oliviia finished 2nd out of 26 in the SP, with a score of 43.26.

Unfortunately, I was not able to watch the Santa Claus Cup due to concentrating on the Bosphorus Cup and the British Championships.

Looking at the Protocols, she only had one issue. The second element, the Triple Flip, was under-rotated. It had the only GOE hit of the programme, at -0.99, which meant that it went from having the second highest Base Value of the programme, to being the second lowest scoring element of the programme. The Judges gave it two -3's; and three -2's.

Since there was only one issue, I will feature some of the elements with positive GOE.

The opening element, the Double Axel, had the second biggest GOE of the programme, at +0.66. But it also got a bonus point. This meant that it went from having the third highest Base Value of the programme to being the second highest scoring element of the programme. It got +1 from Judge 1; +2 from three Judges; and +3 from Judge 3.

The fourth element, the Triple Loop-Double Loop, had the second smallest GOE of the programme, at +0.16. But it also got a bonus point. And since it already had the highest Base Value of the programme, this meant that it remained as the highst scoring element of the programme. The Judges gave it three 0's; and two +1's.

The fifth element, the Layback Spin, had the biggest GOE of the programme, at +0.88, which meant that it went from having the lowest Base Value of the programme, to being the third lowest scoring element of the programme. It got +2 from Judge 4; +3 from Judge 1; and +4 from the remaining four Judges.

For the remaining elements, the Judges marks were in the 0 to +2 range.

Oliviia is currently 1.01 points behind 1st position, Tera GROPP (USA), and 0.15 points ahead of 3rd position, Katinka SZEPLAKI (HUN). The three of them are the top 3 skaters in a group where 4 skaters are covered by 2.55 points, which is completed by Grace ZHANG (USA) in 4th position, 1.54 points behind Oliviia.

Now this is a position that Oliviia is unaccustomed to. Being in a tight group fighting over all the steps on the podium. She really does need to have a good Free Skate, not just to try to win, but also to make sure that she doesn't drop any positions.

So, I hope she does have a good Free Skate.

:cheer: WELL DONE OLIVIIA!!! :cheer:

The Advanced Novice Ladies FS is due to start at 11:00:00 CET (10:00:00 GMT / 12:00:00 EET / 13:00:00 MSK). So 4 hours from now.

Oliviia will be the 25th and penultimate skater to start. So, sixth and penultimate skater to go in Group 4.

And that is as much as I can tell you, because the Time Schedule PDF's are not working.

But, those times may change if somebody that is due on before her withdraws.

Santa Claus Cup Advanced Novice Ladies FS: Results; Protocols
Santa Claus Cup Advanced Novice Ladies: Results

No video uploaded yet 😞

Oliviia finished 1st out of 21 in the FS, with a score of 82.18. This meant that she remained in 1st position overall, with a score of 125.92.

Unfortunately, I was not able to watch the Santa Claus Cup due to concentrating on the Bosphorus Cup and the British Championships.

Looking at the Protocols, she had a rocky start. All of the elements that she had issues with were in a group at the start of the programme.

The first element, the Triple Lutz, was under-rotated. It had the second biggest GOE hit of the programme, at -0.94, which meant that it went from having the fourth highest Base Value to being the third lowest scoring element of the programme. It got -3 from Judge 3; and -2 from the remaining four Judges.

In the second element, the Triple Salchow-Triple Toe, the Triple Toe was downgraded. It had the biggest GOE hit of the programme, at -1.29, but because the Triple Salchow got a bonus point, the damage was limited. It had the second highest Base Value of the programme, and remained as the second highest scoring element of the programme. It got -4 from Judge 3; and -3 from the remaining four Judges.

The third element, the Triple Flip, was also downgraded. It had the smallest GOE hit of the programme, at -0.60, and because it already had the lowest Base Value of the programme, it remained as the lowest scoring element of the programme. The Judges gave it two -3's; and three -3's.

For the remaining elements, the GOE ranged from +0.14 for the seventh element, the Triple Salchow, to +1.50 for the final element, the Choreographic Sequence. Apart from a +4 from Judge 5 for the aforementioned Choreographic Sequence, all the Judges marks for the elements with positive GOE were in the 0 to +3 range.

I should also point out that in the fifth element, the Triple Loop-Double Axel-Double Axel done in sequence, the Triple Loop and the first of the Double Axels each got a bonus point. It also had the fourth highest GOE of the programme, at +0.33. And because the sequence already had by miles the highest Base Value of the programme (over double the second highest Base Value), this meant it remained as the highest scoring element of the programme by miles!

Oliviia finished the Free Skate 0.20 points ahead of 2nd position, Grace ZHANG (USA), and 1.08 points ahead of 3rd position, Tera GROPP (USA).

Overall, Oliviia finished 0.07 points ahead of 2nd position, Gropp, and 1.74 points ahead of 3rd position, Zhang.

The interesting thing is that the total Base Value of Oliviia's programme was a good bit lower than the total Base Value of the programmes from the two American girls. Zhang, whose programme had the highest total Base Value, ended up with a Technical Elements Score that was 1.96 points higher than the Base Value, putting her 2.30 points ahead of Oliviia. But her Programme Components Score was 2.50 points lower than Olivia's. As for Gropp, the higher positive GOE's she was getting were cancelled out by very costly negative GOE's, leaving her TES pretty much the same as the programme's BV. But she did have the second highest PCS of the field, 0.73 points lower than Oliviia.

Well, after being behind in the SP, normal service has been resumed. Oliviia won. She and the two American girls were in a different league to the rest of the field in the FS, and boys it was tight! But she came out on top.

This is precisely the type of competition she needs to prepare her for moving to Juniors next season!

I'm not sure if she is in action again before the end of the calendar year. But, I look forward to when she is in action again.

:cheer: WELL DONE OLIVIIA!!! :cheer:

Sorry that this thread is de facto becoming the Oliviia Bazlova thread. But, with the other active skaters on the team having their own Fan Fest threads, that is the way it has turned out. But, don't worry, come May, Oliviia will be getting her own thread and things will go back to normal here.

I do have some news for you. Well, it became known a couple of weeks ago, but I decided to wait until I checked with one of her team-mates at the Denkova-Staviski club and got confirmation that this is what is actually happening before I did a post about it.

A couple of weeks ago, Varvara Abramkina competed at the Bulgarian Championships, as she does every year. However, whereas she is normally entered as a guest skater in a competition of her own, this time she was in the main Junior Ladies competition. And she didn't just compete in the main competition - she dominated it!

All season, we had been assuming that the reason that Varvara withdrew from the Junior Grand Prix Series, and hadn't been in action at any other events this season, was because she was injured. But it wasn't. It was because she is switching countries to Bulgaria.

Of course, it is disappointing to see her leaving Cyprus. But, thinking about it, this is a win-win situation for all parties involved.

Next season, Cyprus was due to have 3 strong skaters competing in Junior Ladies - Varvara, Vasilisa, and Oliviia. And whilst it would not have been that difficult to earn enough slots for all of them to get two Junior Grands Prix each, it would have been difficult to earn enough slots to get them all to Junior Worlds. It takes time to build up from one slot. But now with Varvara switching to Bulgaria, it means Cyprus only needs to earn one additional slot for Junior Worlds rather than two. Which will mean a lot less pressure on Vasilisa's shoulders come March.

Although the Denkova-Staviski club is the most high-profile club in Bulgaria, in recent years their Junior Ladies skaters have been overshadowed by skaters from another club in Sofia, the Elit club. And by two skaters in particular: Lia Lyubenova and Krista Georgieva. With Leilah Patten opting to represent Great Britain, and Chiara Hristova moving to Seniors, the Denkova-Staviski club were left with only one Junior skater on their books that was capable of beating all of the Elit club's Junior skaters. But she was representing a different country!

The Denkova-Staviski club bringing Varvara into play made all the difference at Nationals. Varvara won the title by a country mile, with Lyubenova in 2nd and Georgieva in 3rd. The other Denkova-Staviski club skaters finished in 4th, 5th, 6th, and 9th positions. (Ironically, the highest of them, Milena Velcheva in 4th position, has only just moved to the Denkova-Staviski club from the Elit club. And Hristova, who has returned to Juniors after struggling in Seniors, was in 5th).

With this switch, I can see all three of Varvara, Vasilisa and Oliviia competing at Junior Worlds every year, whereas if Varvara had stayed, one of them would probably have missed out. And it would probably have been Varvara.

That said, Varvara will still not go to Junior Worlds in March. Her last competition for Cyprus was the Black Sea Ice Cup at the start of April, so she wouldn't be eligible for Bulgaria at Junior Worlds this year. In all probability Lyubinova will get sent to Tallinn.

It would have been nice if they had all continued to compete under the same flag. But, the main thing is that this will improve the chances of them all getting to compete on the big stage regularly.

Finally, before I go, although I have already done it privately, I would like to take the opportunity to wish a Happy Birthday to our long-serving GS member who is originally from Cyprus.

Here's to a good second half of the season for the Cypriot skaters!

Wow! Two figure skating stories in the Cyprus Mail in the space of three days!

OK, so neither of them were about their competitive skaters. 😞

The first, on Tuesday, was actually a general story about the famous people included in the New Year Honours List. Torvill & Dean just happened to be the ones shown in the accompanying photo:

https://cyprus-mail.com/2025/12/30/...d-boss-wiegman-recognised-in-new-year-honours

The second story today, though, was about a show that is being held in Cyprus over three days next month.

https://cyprus-mail.com/2026/01/01/aladdin-and-1001-nights-on-ice

Unfortunately, this and all the other stories I can find about the show don't tell us who is in the cast... other than Philip Warren (USA).

I never thought I would ever see the day when the lead story on the sports pages of a Cypriot newspaper would be about figure skating!

Phileleftheros, and it's English edition In-Cyprus (the former Cyprus Weekly), ran a story about Emilea yesterday.

Here is the English version of the article:

https://in-cyprus.philenews.com/sports/cypriot-american-emilea-zingas-fifth-place-milano-olympics/

The Greek version includes a fan cam video of their FS in Assago that is not included in the English version. So here is the link to the Greek version of the article:

https://www.philenews.com/athlitika...chimerinous-olimpiakous-i-23chroni-pafitissa/

Bit confused about her grandparents running an Italian restaurant, though. But, I suppose Italian food is better known in America, and hence more likely to sell than Greek food.

On a similar note, in their article about the Opening Ceremony last Saturday, K-News (the Cypriot edition of the Greek newspaper Kathimerini) talked extensively about Emilea and Vadym, and even used a photo of them as the photo accompanying the article!

https://knews.kathimerini.com.cy/en/news/milano-cortina-2026-winter-games-open-in-spectacular-style

Unfortunately, I can't find a Greek version for those who would have liked to have a look at it.

Good to see Emilea's achievements getting acknowledged in her ancestral homeland even though she is no longer representing Cyprus.

I have to say, I am disappointed that the other English language newspaper in Cyprus, the Cyprus Mail, hasn't run a story about Emilea. Especially after they ran features on Marilena, Stefania, Angelina, and Ilia over the past couple of years.

However, they did run a story a couple of weeks ago about the athletes representing Cyprus at the Milano-Cortina Olympics:

https://cyprus-mail.com/2026/02/02/two-athletes-to-represent-cyprus-at-winter-olympics

The opening paragraph highlighted that it is the first time since Sochi 2014 that Cyprus has sent two athletes to the Olympics.

I wonder if the writer of the article realised how close they were to sending three this time. Stefania Yakovleva was only 2.23 points away from being the first figure skater to represent Cyprus at the Olympics.

But, it got me curious as to when the last time that Cyprus sent more than two athletes to the Olympics. And it turned out that it had only happened on the first four occasions that Cyprus competed at the Olympics.

Here is the full run down of how many athletes Cyprus has sent to each Olympics (as noted by Nick Mullins on the TNT Sports / Eurosport coverage of the Opening Ceremony, all of them have been Alpine Skiers):

Notes:
  • Karolina Fotiadou, the female skier who went to Calgary 1988, Albertville 1992 and Lillehammer 1994, is the sister of Alekhis Fotiadis, one of the male skaters that went to Sarajevo 1984, Calgary 1988 and Albertville 1992.
  • The two skiers that went to Vancouver 2010, Christopher Papamichalopoulos and Sophia Papamichalopoulou, are brother and sister.
  • Yiannos Kouyoumdjian, the male skier going to Milano-Cortina 2026, is the son of Lina Aristodemou, the female skier who went to Lake Placid 1980.

Not bad considering that Cyprus is not part of the traditional Winter Sports heartland.

Yiannos Kouyoumdjian will be in action in the Men's Giant Slalom today, and the Men's Slalom on Monday. Andrea Loizidou will be in action in the Women's Slalom on Wednesday.

Oh. My. Goodness.

I have had this thought going around in my head for a while, but I never actually checked it until there now.

When I saw the names of the two Alpine Skiers who are representing Cyprus in Milano-Cortina, I thought "the girl has the same name as one of my skating kids".

I just checked the dates of birth of the skier and the skater. They are the same.

And when you compare the photo on the skier's IOC Bio with the videos of the skater competing, there is no doubt:

It's the same girl!!! :jaw:

Although Stefania did not get through Skate To Milano, there is a figure skater representing Cyprus at these Olympics after all. It's just that she is now skiing instead of skating.

Here is Andrea's profile at the start of this thread:

https://www.goldenskate.com/forum/posts/1876099

And here is the programme with which she achieved her absolute PB score:

Andrea Loizidou - 2017 Cyprus Championships FS

She was really good on ice skates. So I am really looking forward to seeing what she is like on skis.

Sports are pretty much a family business on Cyprus!

To be fair, I think that is true of niche sports in a lot of countries.

As well as Alpine skiing, we've seen it in figure skating in Cyprus as well. 2019 Advanced Novice Champion Christiana AFXENTIOU and 2019 Cubs Silver Medallist Maria Nelly AFXENTIOU are the daughters of Irina AFXENTIOU, the president of the Amathusia club. 2013 Basic Novice A Champion Yelizaverta PARSHINA is the daughter of Tetsiana PARSHINA, head coach at the Amathusia club.

And bringing it back to the current Olympics, ever since I first came across Andrea LOIZIDOU the best part of a decade ago, I have wondered if she was related to an older skater with the same surname, 2017 Basic Novice B Silver Medallist Maria Eleni LOIZIDOU. But, I have never managed to find out.

I suppose it is not that surprising for members of the same family to develop similar interests. But it is a great achievement for them to go on to compete in the same sport at an international level. Which all the skaters I have mentioned in this post have done.

CaroLiza_fan

Having previously competed at the Youth Olympics in Gangwon, South Korea, two years ago, Andrea will be making her Senior Olympic debut today in Cortina, Italy.

Run 1 of the Women's Slalom is due to start at 10:00:00 CET (09:00:00 GMT / 11:00:00 GMT). So 4 hours from now.

Andrea will be the 95th and final skier to start. So, sixty fifth and final skier to go in Group 4.

And that is as much as I can tell you, because the Start Order PDF's in Alpine Skiing do not give individual start times (it's an outdoor sport, so it can often be affected by the weather).

Olympic Games Women's Slalom Run 1: Results; Protocols

No video uploaded yet 😞

Andrea did not finish the first run.

Here is what I wrote in the sport thread when she was waiting to start:

And here is what I wrote about her run:

Looking at the Protocols (hey, since I don't know the skiing terminology, I may as well use the skating terminology!), Andrea had reached Intermediate 1 in 16.46 seconds, which put her in 80th position; and reached Intermediate 2 in 30.43 seconds, which put in 75th position. But, she didn't get as far as Intermediate 3.

Unfortunately, because Andrea did not finish the first run, that means she will not be able to do the second run. But, she is not alone in that regard. Out of the 95 starters, only 64 of them finished.

Nevertheless, just getting to an Olympics is a great achievement. And Andrea has now done it twice! Two years ago at Junior level, and now at Senior level.

Who knows, if Andrea gets her skates out and starts training again, she could maybe do an Ester Ledecká and compete in two different sports at the next Olympics in France! It may already be 8 years since her last figure skating competition, but she was good. And as we have seen this season, stranger things have happened.

Hey, a guy can dream!

In all seriousness, I am so proud of what Andrea has achieved on both skates and skis. And she is still so young!

:cheer: WELL DONE ANDREA!!! :cheer:

Time to introduce a new name to this thread.

The runner-up in Intermediate Novices at the 2024 Cyprus Championships, SONG Xiangyu (Amathusia), will be making her international debut tomorrow morning at the Daugava Open Cup in Riga, Latvia.

The Novice B Ladies FS is due to start tomorrow at 08:00:00 EET (06:00:00 GMT). So 10 hours from now.

Xiangyu will be the 9th and antepenultimate skater to start. So, fourth and antepenultimate skater to go in Group 2.

The Group 2 Warm-Up is due to start at 08:30:20 EET (06:30:20 GMT). So 10h 30m from now.

Xiangyu is due to start at 08:46:30 EET (06:46:30 GMT). So 10h 46m from now.

But, those times may change if somebody that is due on before her withdraws.

Xiangyu finished 11th out of 11 in the FS, with a score of 15.11.

Here is what I wrote about the Warm-Up in the competition thread:

Here is what I wrote when she was being introduced:

And here is what I wrote about the programme:

Looking at the Protocols, unfortunately there were no positive numbers. However, it is not as bad as it sounds, because there were a lot of zeroes amongst the Judges marks. One element had neutral GOE, and for three other elements the GOE was barely more than into the negative range. So, it was only really the four elements in the middle of the programme that had any impact.

The third element, the Choreographic Sequence, had the biggest GOE hit of the programme, at -1.13. But because it had the highest Base Value of the programme, it remained as the highest scoring element of the programme. It got -4 from Judge 3; -2 from two Judges; and -1 from Judge 2.

In the fourth element, the Single Axel-Single Toe, the Axel was landed on the quarter. It had the fourth biggest GOE hit of the programme, at -0.25, but because it had the second highest Base Value of the programme, it remained as the second highest scoring element of the programme. It got -3 from Judge 3; and-2 from the remaining three Judges.

The fifth element, the Change Foot Combination Spin, had the third biggest GOE hit of the programme, at -0.32. It went from having the third highest Base Value of the programme, to being the fifth highest scoring element of the programme. The Judges gave it two -3's; and two -2's.

The sixth element, the Single Axel, was under-rotated, and she fell. It had the third biggest GOE hit of the programme, at -0.44, which meant it went from having the third lowest Base Value of the programme, to being the second lowest scoring element of the programme. Unsurprisingly, it got -5 from all four Judges.

For the remaining elements, the GOE ranged from -0.06 for the opening element, the Sit Spin, to 0.00 for the final element, the Single Axel. The aforementioned Sit Spin went from having the fourth highest Base Value of the programme, to being the third highest scoring element of the programme. All the Judges marks from these four elements were either -1 or 0. The aforementioned Single Axel was completely neutral.

Xiangyu finished the Free Skate 6.94 points behind 10th position, Jelizaveta DIBRIVNIJA (LAT), and 7.64 points behind 9th position, Luiza SEMEVICA (LAT).

Although I am sure she is disappointed to finish in last position, she didn't do so badly in the programme.

I hope to see her competing on the international circuit again.

After Xiangyu skated on Thursday, three more Amathusia skaters will be in action in Riga tomorrow. The first of them to take to the ice tomorrow morning, ALINA MAKHMUTOVA, has been discussed before, when she competed at a different arena in Riga last May at the Volvo Open Cup. The other two are new names to this thread (although, I have come across the older girl before), but since they are skating later in the day, I will do reminder posts for them tomorrow morning.

Alina will be back in action tomorrow morning at the Daugava Open Cup in Riga, Latvia.

The Chicks B Ladies FS is due to start tomorrow at 09:30:00 EET (07:30:00 GMT). So 10 hours from now.

Alina will be the 7th skater to start. So, seventh and antepenultimate skater to go in Group 1.

The Group 1 Warm-Up is due to start at 09:30:00 EET (07:30:00 GMT). So 10 hours from now.

Alina is due to start at 09:59:30 EET (07:59:30 GMT). So 10h 29m from now.

But, those times may change if somebody that is due on before her withdraws.

Also in action in Riga today will be Maryia AULASEVICH (Amathusia). I have to be honest, her name hadn't come up on my radar before. But, she was the 🥉 Bronze Medallist in the Chicks competition for guest skaters at the 2024 Cyprus Championships. She and Alina also competed in Bronze I Ladies at the Union Figure Skating Trophy last season, but I didn't pick up on it. (Probably because there were so many competitions there and it was on a pay stream).

Maryia will be in action today at the Daugava Open Cup in Riga, Latvia.

The Beginners 2015 Ladies FS is due to start at 16:35:00 EET (14:35:00 GMT). So 8 hours from now.

Maryia will be the 17th skater to start. So, second skater to go in Group 3.

The Group 3 Warm-Up is due to start at 17:57:00 EET (15:57:00 GMT). So 9h 22m now.

Maryia is due to start at 18:05:45 EET (16:05:45 GMT). So 9h 30m from now.

But, those times may change if somebody that is due on before her withdraws.

The final skater from Cyprus in action in Riga today will be Anna KALOGIROU KAPSALI (Amathusia). Now she is a skater whose name I have come across before, but I haven't actually seen her. She won the Intermediate Novice competition for guest skaters at the 2024 Cyprus Championships. For a long time, I have wondered if Anna was related to double Basic Novice B Cyprus Champion Eliana KALOGIROU (who retired at the age of 18 after finishing 2nd in Juniors at the 2019 Cyprus Championships). But, I have never been able to find out.

Anna will be in action today at the Daugava Open Cup in Riga, Latvia.

The Beginners 2005-2010 Ladies FS is due to start at 18:45:00 EET (16:45:00 GMT). So 10 hours from now.

Anna will be the 8th skater to start. So, second skater to go in Group 2.

The Group 2 Warm-Up is due to start at 19:16:15 EET (17:16:15 GMT). So 10h 31m now.

Anna is due to start at 19:25:30 EET (17:25:30 GMT). So 10h 40m from now.

Alina finished 1st out of 28 in the FS, with a score of 22.80.

As an introduction to how I worked things, here is what I wrote in the competition thread at the start of the day:

Here is what I wrote about the Warm-Up in the competition thread:

Here is what I wrote when she was being introduced:

Here is what I wrote about the programme:

And here is what I wrote after the competition had finished:

Looking at the Protocols, only two elements had any negative numbers next to them. And even then they barely registered.

The third element, the Choreographic Sequence, had the biggest GOE of the programme, at +0.50. And because it already had the highest Base Value of the programme, it remained as the highest scoring element of the programme. It got 0 from Judge 4; +1 from two Judges; and +2 from Judge 2.

The fourth element, the Change Foor Combiantion Spin, had the biggest GOE hit of the programme, at -0.04. But because it had the second highest Base Value of the programme, it remained as the second highest scoring element of the programme. It got -1 from Judge 3; and 0 from the remaining three Judges.

The fifth element, the Single Lutz-Single Toe, had the smallest GOE hit of the programme, at -0.02. It had the joint third highest Base Value of the programme, which meant it became the fourth highest scoring element of the programme. It got -1 from Judge 2; and 0 from the remaining three Judges.

For the remaining elements, the GOE ranged from +0.03 for the penultimate element, the Single Loop, to +0.11 for the final element, the Sit Spin. The Judges marks for these four elements were all either 0 or +1.

Although Alina only had the fourth highest Total Technical Element Score of the field (quite a few skaters had programmes which had higher Total Base Values), she did have the highest Total Programme Components Score of the field.

Alina finished the Free Skate 0.52 points ahead of 2nd position, Adele MOOSEL (EST), and 1.35 points ahead of 3rd position, Elza VIISUT (EST). The three of them are the top 3 skaters in a group of 27 skaters covered by 10.13 points, stretching down to Nora Annika LODE (LAT) in 27th position.

This was an extremely tight competition. Even if you cut it down to using a 1 point gap to define groups, they would be the top 3 skaters in a group of in a group of 26 skaters covered by 8.47 points, stretching down to Anna Elina MARKINA (LAT) in 26th position.

And the sole girl from outside the Baltic States came out on top.

I've only seen Alina twice, but both times she has been on the podium. And I am convinced that this is a girl we should be keping an eye out for in the future. Because she already looks promising. And with 5 years more experience, she should be the full package by the time she is age eligible for Junior level.

:cheer: WELL DONE ALINA!!! :cheer:

Maryia finished 15th out of 22 in the FS, with a score of 15.47.

Here is what I wrote about the Warm-Up in the competition thread:

Here is what I wrote when she was being introduced:

And here is what I wrote about the programme:

Looking at the Protocols, there was only one element with positive GOE. However, it is not as bad as it sounds. Only one element had significant negative GOE. Unfortunately, another was invalidated. But for the rest of the elements, one had neutral GOE, and the other three were barely more than into the negative range.

The opening element the Upright Spin, had the only positive GOE of the programme, at +0.17. And because it had the joint second highest Base Value of the programme, it became the second highest scoring element of the programme in it's own right. It got +1 from Judge 1; and +2 from the remaining two Judges.

The fifth element, the Single Salchow, was completely neutral in terms of both GOE and Judegs marks. And because it had the lowest Base Value of the programme, it remained as the lowest scoring element of the programme.

The third element, the Choreographic Sequence, had the biggest GOE hit of the programme, at -0.67. But because it had the highest Base Value of the programme, it remained as the highest scoring element of the programme. It got -2 from Judge 2; and -1 from the remaining two Judges.

The final element, the Sit Spin, was called as an invalid element.

For the remaining elements, the GOE ranged from -0.08 for the fourth element, the Single Flip-Single Toe, to -0.02 for the second element, the Single Loop-Single Loop. Apart from a -3 from Judge 3 for the aforementioned fourth element, the Judges marks for these three elements were all in the -2 to 0 range.

It should be noted that Maryia was one of only two skaters outside the Top 10 who had a Programme Components Score of over 9 points. In fact, she had the 10th highest PCS of the entire field. The problem was that only two skaters had a lower Technical Elemets Score than her.

Maryia finished the Free Skate 0.31 points behind 14th position, Kristina EVART (LAT), and 0.33 points ahead of 16th position, Anastasija TOLPIGINA (LAT). The three of them are part of a group of 17 skaters covered by 5.62 points, stretching from Olivija Viktorija URBONAITE (LTU) in 4th position, 3.92 points ahead of Maryia, down to Sofiia ZABOLOTNA (LTU) in 20th position, 1.70 points behind Maryia.

This was an extremely tight competition. None of the gaps in the field were over 2 points, so I had to use a gap of 1 point to define the groups.

It's a real pity the Sit Spin got invalidated, because that would have made a world of difference to her scores.

It's funny, because when I was watching her, I thought that it would be the jumps that would cost her. But, they all got GOE of between -0.08 and 0. So, it would only take a little bit of polishing up for her to be getting positive scores on all of them.

And for that reason, I can see potential here.

:cheer: WELL DONE MARYIA!!! :cheer:

Anna finished 9th out of 11 in the FS, with a score of 14.15.

The third element, the Change Foot Combination Spin, was called as an invalid element.

For the remaining elements, the GOE ranged from -0.07 for the fifth element, the Single Flip-Single Toe, to -0.03 for the second element, the Single Flip. The Judges marks for these three elements were all in the -2 to 0 range.

Unfortunately, Anna had the second lowest total Technical Elements Score of the field. However, it was only 0.16 points lower than the skater with the next lowest TES, Elza ZELLANE (LAT). And because Anna's Programme Components was 1.27 points higher than Elza's, it meant that Anna finished ahead of Elza overall.

Anna finished the Free Skate 1.52 points behind 8th position, Viktorija VISSARIONAVA (LAT), and 1.11 points ahead of 10th position, Elza ZELLANE (LAT).

Writing the posts for Maryia and Anna back-to-back, it struck me how similar the Protocols were. They both had one element with positive GOE (albeit with very different numbers); they both had a spin invalidated; they both had a big GOE hit of -0.67 from their Choreographic Sequence; and the rest of the negative GOE's for both of them were barely more than below 0. And in both cases, their PCS was higher than their TES.

As I said at the time, I liked Anna. Having looked at her social media, it is obvious that her studies are her priority. But, I hope that she is able to fit more competitions in around her education. Because I for one really want to see more of her.

:cheer: WELL DONE ANNA!!! :cheer:
