Figure Skating in Cyprus

I've already posted this in Angelina and Ilia's Fan Fest, but thought I should post it here too.

I've already posted this in Angelina and Ilia's Fan Fest, but thought I should post it here too.

Just took my daily look at the Cyprus Mail's website, and found that they posted an interview with Ilia yesterday:

https://cyprus-mail.com/2025/05/16/a-minute-with-ilia-karankevich-professional-figure-skater

It was a very interesting read. He really has his head screwed on.

One of the things I found out that I didn't know before was that Ilia and his family used to live in 🇴🇲 Oman. Another of my kids, Amani Fancy, also used to live there. So, I wonder if they have ever spoken, and compared notes.

I know it is a set set of questions, but I always laugh when they ask young people "What would you say to your 18-year-old self?" For goodness sake, it is only just over three years ago that he was 18!

By the way, Marilena was featured in the same column back in February 2022. See this post for more info about it.

I wonder who the next skater they interview will be... 🤔

Enjoy!

CaroLiza_fan

After Ilia was featured in the "A Minute With" column of the Cyprus Mail in May, it was Angelina's turn this week:

https://cyprus-mail.com/2025/08/22/a-minute-with-angelina-kudryavtseva-ice-dancer-figure-skater

It was already obvious from looking at her Instagram over the years, but the main thing that came across in this interview is how important her family is to Angelina.

It's well seeing that Angelina and her family have lived in Cyprus for so many years. She is your typical Cypriot.

I did burst out laughing at one point. It was obvious from her answer that Angelina realised how ridiculous it was to ask a 19-year-old the "What would you say to your 18-year-old self?" question.

This interview just confirms what I have often suspected - that it is impossible not to like Angelina.

@CaroLiza_fan If you are doing such major maintenance, would it be easier/better to cut this thread off (add applicable date range to the thread titles) and start a new thread for 2025 on?

That way, the thread would remain intact as a historical record.

For skaters getting their own fanfests, you could do an initial post similar to the original post for all skaters. You could add something like: prior to the 2025 season, this skater was covered in the "Figure Skating in Cypress xxxx-2025 thread" .

For the new "Figure skating in Cypress 2025 on" thread, you could give a list of skaters who have their own fanfests in the OP.

For the Canadian skaters, people often post news about a skater in both the Canadian Skating thread and in the skater's own fanfest. There's no reason you can't do that for the Cypress skaters as well.

Honestly, I don't think there is enough activity to warrent season threads. It took 10 years for this thread to reach the number of pages that last season's Dutch thread reached in one year. And a page worth of what we have here is going to be hived off into another individual Fan Fest in May, once the skater in question is old enough to have her own profile and Fan Fest. Plus, let's face it, I'm the only person posting here.

Nah, the way I am now approaching the threads concerning the Cypriot skaters seems to be working. It was the fact that I didn't realise the best approach at the start that was the problem. Fan Fests were pretty new back then, and I was only learning (along with everybody else). But, I have more experience now, and am able to fix those mistakes without much bother.

The maintenance isn't actually that big in the greater scheme of things. But, it seems big because I knew I wouldn't be able to do anything for four or five days there because of other things happening (Robin Cousins Cup, JGP Riga, Balaton Park MotoGP, Cadwell Park BSB). But, I'm getting back to it this morning and tomorrow morning.

And on that note, I'd better get to it!

We have some significant developments.

Marilena has been replaced as the skater being sent to the Olympic Qualifying Event in Beijing to try to earn Cyprus a Ladies slot at the 2026 Olympics in Assago. Stefania, who was originally down as the substitute, is being sent instead.

For those that have been following Stefania's progress lately, this comes as no surprise. Stefania has been on a great run of form recently, and finished significantly ahead of Marilena when they came up against each other directly for the first time at the Robin Cousins Cup.

The priority at the moment is to claim the slot. And right now, Stefania is the more likely of the two skaters to do that.

As a result of now going to Beijing, Stefania has withdrawn from the Kinoshita Group Cup later this week. Which means that we will have to wait a bit longer for her to make her Challenger Event debut.

After how much she enjoyed her time in Osaka two years ago for a Junior Grand Prix, I'm sure Stefania was looking forward to returning to the same arena for her first Challenger Event. But, after doing the Robin Cousins Cup last week, it would have been 3 competitions in 5 weeks. That's too many competitions in too short a space of time. She needs to be fresh for Beijing.

However, we do still have a Cypriot girl going to Osaka, as Emilea and Vadym will be competing in Ice Dance, albeit representing America.

Staying with Ice Dance, and Angelina and Ilia will be heading to Sheffield for the Bolero Cup.

And back to Ladies Singles, and Vasilisa will be making her Junior GP debut in Varese, Italy.

All in all, the early part of this season is very busy for the skaters from Cyprus.

It's the first of the month! And it is also the day that one of the Medallists from the inaugural Cyprus Championships, Liza Parshina, reaches the quarter century milestone.

:cheer: HAPPY 25th BIRTHDAY LIZA!!! :cheer:

:cheer:   :party2: :points: :hb:

I hope you have an enjoyable day, and that the coming year is a good one for you.

Yelizaveta Parshina may not have competed in many international competitions, but she is a significant part of the story of figure skating in Cyprus. She was twice a 🥈 Silver Medallist in the Cyprus Championships, including being just 0.06 points behind the winner in Basic Novice A Ladies at the inaugural edition in 2013.

Liza is the daughter of Tatsiyana Parshyna, the coach at the most high profile skating club in Cyprus, the Amathusia club in Limassol.

After retiring from figure skating, Liza competed in windsurfing. She representing Cyprus at the 2016 RS:X Youth World Windsurfing Championships, which were held in Limassol. She finished 24th out of 25 overall in the Women's competition, and 8th out of 8 in the U-17 class within it.

Anyway, I hope she is enjoying her birthday.

It's that day of the year again, when two of the Cypriot skaters celebrate their birthdays.

:cheer: HAPPY 23rd BIRTHDAY ZEA MARIA!!! :cheer:

:cheer:   :party2: :points: :hb:

:cheer: HAPPY 21st BIRTHDAY CHRISTIANA!!! :cheer:

:cheer:   :party2: :points: :hb:

I hope you both have an enjoyable day, and that the coming year is a good one for both of you.

For years, Zea Maria Antoniou was the proverbial bridesmaid at the Cyprus Championships. Four times she won the Basic Novice A 🥉 Bronze Medal, from the inaugural edition in 2013, until 2016. But finally, when she moved to Basic Novice B in 2017, she won the 🥇 Gold Medal. And just like busses, you wait years for one, and then two come along in quick succession: she successfully defended her title the following year!

Zea Maria is now married to an English guy.

Christiana Afxentiou competed at the first seven editions of the Cyprus Championships, going home with six 🥇 Gold Medals and one 🥈 Silver Medal. Don't quote me on this because results pages for Nationals held since the pandemic have been a bit elusive, but I think she might be the most successful skater at the Cyprus Championships

It is hardly surprising that Christiana has been so successful. She is the daughter of Irina Afxentiou, the president of the most high profile skating club in Cyprus, the Amathusia club in Limassol.

Christiana has an honour that I bet not many figure skaters have. A building in Limassol is actually named after her! Well, it's the building where her father's architecture firm is based. But, what a lovely way to show how much you love your daughter!

Anyway, I hope they are both enjoying their birthday.

You thought right! ;)

Thank you so much for sharing it with us!  :points:

I love my baby girl!!!

And I see that the article confirmed something for me that I had long suspected. I was nearly sure that that was Stefania's mother with her in Sheffield, but I didn't want to commit on here. You see, I had seen that lady before in a team photo from the 2024 Youth Olympics (which Stefania was not able to actually compete in due to injury, but attended anyway since everything was already arranged). My first thought when I saw her back then was that this has to be Stefania's mother, because you could see there was a likeness between them. But, then the doubts started creeping in.

It was lovely to hear Stefania's views on what happened in Sheffield. It really was an amazing result. You could tell by her reaction when the scores were announced after the FS that she didn't expect it at all. So, it was nice to hear her actually say so.

I didn't realise that she had started skating due to health issues. I hope that whatever the reason was is no longer a problem. And I want to extend my haeartfelt thanks to that doctor that advised her to try skating. Your advice has made not just a young girl happy, but a lot of other people as well. Not least myself.

I bet that doctor never imagined that all those years later, that little girl would be going to Beijing to try to qualify for the Olympics. Or that she would have a good chance of doing so!

We have one more birthday before the end of September. And it is one of the younger skaters to have represented Cyprus.

:cheer: HAPPY 16th BIRTHDAY SOFIA!!! :cheer:

:cheer:   :party2: :points: :hb:

I hope you have an enjoyable day, and that the coming year is a good one for you.

In the three years that Sofia Lapshyna competed at the Cyprus Championships, she was unbeaten. She won the Chicks title twice, and the Cubs title once. She was also a regular on the podium at the international events that she competed in at those levels. And when she moved to Basic Novice level, she won a 🥉 Bronze Medal in her first competition.

I really liked Sofia. Definitely a star in the making. And I was really looking forward to seeing her provide Stefania with some competition in Juniors, and the two of them pushing each other forward. But Sofia's skating career ended prematurely due to reasons beyond her control.

Suffice to say, Sofia is Ukrainian. And she has not competed since the war started.

However, she has been posting online, including tonight. So, at least we know she is safe.

Anyway, I hope she is enjoying her birthday.

Ahead of her first international appearance of the season next week, Oliviia will be taking part in Estonian domestic event Gliss Extra in Haabersti, Tallinn.

The Advanced Novice Ladies SP is due to start at 12:50:00 EET (10:50:00 GMT / 11:50:00 CET / 13:50:00 MSK). So 5 hours from now.

Oliviia will be the 18th skater to start. So second skater to go in Group 3.

And that is as much as I can tell you, because the Time Schedule PDF's don't work.

But, those times may change if somebody that is due on before her withdraws.

Hope this helps

Gliss Extra Advanced Novice Ladies SP: Results; Protocols

No video uploaded yet 😞

Oliviia finished 2nd out of 32 in the SP, with a score of 43.16.

Unfortunately I didn't realise that Gliss Extra was on this week, or that Oliviia was competing.

Looking at the Protocols, Oliviia had two elements with negative GOE, but we are only told what the issue was with one of them. The second element, the Triple Flip, was under-rotated. It got the biggest GOE hit of the programme, at -0.99, which meant that it went from having the second highest Base Value of the programme to being the second lowest scoring element of the programme. It got -4 from Judge 1; -3 from Judge 3; and -2 from the remaining three Judges.

The other element with issues was her combination jump, the Triple Loop-Double Loop. It had the second biggest GOE hit of the programme, at -0.49, but because it had the highest Base Value of the programme, and also got a bonus point, it actually not only remained as the highest scoring element of the programme, but actually scored higher than the Base Value! It got -1 from four Judges; and 0 from Judge 4.

For the remaining elements, the GOE ranged from +0.66 for the opening element, the Double Axel (which also got a 1 point bonus), to +0.80 for two elements, the Change Foot Combination Spin and the Layback Spin. Apart from a +1 from Judge 5 for the aforementioned Double Axel, all the Judges marks for the elements with positive GOE ranged from +2 to +4.

Oliviia is currently 1.11 points behind 1st position, Lili Liisa SAKS (EST), and 5.44 points ahead of 3rd position, Neea HAAPALA (FIN).

It's not often that this has happened, but Oliviia was held back by her programme content. Her two big ticket elements, the Triple Loop-Double Loop (BV 6.60) and the Triple Flip (BV 4.24), were worth less than Lili's two big ticket elements, the Triple Flip-Double Loop (BV 7.00) and the Triple Lutz (BV 5.90). As a result, Lili's programme had a higher total Base Value to start with, and then all her elements got positive GOE, whereas two of Oliviia's elements got negative GOE.

That said, there is not much between them. And there is no threat from behind. This means Oliviia can concentate fully on going all out to try to overtake Lili.

So, let's hope Oliviia has a good Free Skate and can do just that!

:cheer: WELL DONE OLIVIIA!!! :cheer:

The Advanced Novice Ladies FS is due to start at 12:00:00 EET (10:00:00 GMT / 11:00:00 CET / 13:00:00 MSK). So 5 hours from now.

Oliviia will be the 31st and penultimate skater to start. So seventh and penultimate skater to go in Group 4.

And that is as much as I can tell you, because the Time Schedule PDF's don't work.

But, those times may change if somebody that is due on before her withdraws.

Oliviia finished 1st out of 32 in the FS, with a score of 82.39. This meant that she climbed to 1st position overall, with a score of 125.55.

Unfortunately I didn't realise that Gliss Extra was on this week, or that Oliviia was competing. However, I have now watched the archived livestream, so here is the sort of post I would have written about the Warm-Up if I had been watching LIVE:

Right, there are two girls wearing white jackets over a black dress. But, it is easy to work out which is Oliviia, because the other girl is older and taller.

Oliviia stayed at the far end of the rink at the start of the Warm-Up, and I think she was lining up a jump when she went out of camera shot.

When she came back into shot, she was heading straight towards the camera lining up a jump, and then did it out of shot. Then the graphic came up with the starting order for the group, but it was partially transparent. So, we saw Oliviia come back into shot, and then turn around and go back where she came from!

Shortly after, she came back into shot and, just after the start order graphic disappeared, did a small jump. And then went back where she came from. But not long afterwards, she came back into shot and did a beautiful jump, and then went back to where she came from. Her coach must be positioned at that end of the rink.

After a long wait, she came into camera shot, circled around, and went back out of shot again. A short while later, she scared the life out of me when she suddenly entered shot at speed right beside the camera! She started lining up a jump, and we would have had a good view of it had another skater not overtaken her at just the wrong moment.

Then she circled around and did another jump. There was nobody anywhere near her this time, but unfortunately she popped it. She then circled around and had another go, and this time the jump was beautiful. And then she started coming down the rink and just casually did another beautiful jump.

She then started practicing her Step Sequence. And then when she was finished that, she circled around and did another beautiful jump. I'm not sure if she did any more jumps after that, because she went out of shot a couple of times. And then the Warm-Up ended.

She looks good. Let's hope she does come the programme as well!

CaroLiza_fan

And here is the sort of comment I would have written about her programme:

Ooooh! Beautiful black dress with a blue and green pattern on the front. Is it a sea theme programme?

Don't think so. It's strings music.

Lovely choreography at the start.

Beautiful opening jump.

Combination jump looked effortless.

So did the next jump and the Change Foot Combination Spin that immediately followed.

And the sequence of jumps, although the last one looked like it only just got far enough around.

No such problem for the next individual jump.

The next jump and the Flying Sit Spin were both beautiful.

The choreography during the Step Sequence at the end was exquisite!

She was delighted when she finished, punching the air!

I know I am biased, but this little girl is a star. Not a star in the making. A star already.

Somebody threw her a gift. Probably her Mum, as I saw her around that area.

Big fouble waves and a hand heart when she reached the sofa.

She has a lot of (grown-up) company with her on the sofa. Mum Irina, coach Jelena, and a third person who is really feeling the cold!

Awww. As soon as she got her jacket on, Oliviia started holding her Mum's hand.

Mother and daughter are doing a lot of chatting with each other, and with Jelena.

Oliviia pointing out the Cyprus patches on her jacket. Good girl!

At first Oliviia is satisfied with the scores, but then you can see concern in the faces of all four of them.

She goes into the lead of both the FS, and overall.

:cheer: WELL DONE OLIVIIA!!! :cheer:

CaroLiza_fan

Looking at the Protocols, it was not quite as beautiful a skate as I thought. She actually had five elements with issues.

The opening jump, the Triple Lutz, was landed on the quarter. It had the biggest GOE hit of the programme, at -1.77, but the impact was lessened by also getting a bonus point. So because it had the third highest Base Value of the programme, it remained as the third highest scoring element of the programme. It also got -3 from four Judges; and -2 from Judge 2.

In the combination that followed, the Triple Salchow-Triple Toe, the first part got a bonus point, but the second part was under-rotated. It had the third biggest GOE hit of the programme, at -1.00, but that was completely cancelled out by the bonus point. And because it had the second highest Base Value of the programme, it remained as the second highest scoring element of the programme. In terms of Judges marks, it got two -3's; and three -2's.

The third element, the Triple Flip, was also under-rotated. It had the second biggest GOE hit of the programme, at -1.13, which made it the lowest scoring element of the programme. It actually got the exact same line of Judges marks as the previous element.

This is where it gets interesting. The fifth and sixth elements had the exact same issue with the exact same jump, and got the exact same GOE. In both cases, the Triple Loop was landed on the quarter, and the element got GOE of -0.98.

In the fifth element, the Triple Loop was the first part of a sequence of jumps, and was followed by two Double Axels. And the first of the Double Axels got a bonus point. Which meant that the sequence actually scored 0.02 more than it's Base Value. And because it had by miles the highest Base Value of the programme, it remained by miles the highest scoring element of the programme. It got -3 from Judge 1; -2 from three Judges; and -2 from Judge 3.

In the sixth element, the Triple Loop was done on it's own. However, it didn't get the luxury of a bonus point, so it became the second lowest scoring element of the programme. it got -2 from four Judges; and 0 from Judge 1.

For the remaining elements, the GOE ranged from +0.43 for the seventh element, the Triple Salchow, to +1.50 for the final element, the Choreographic Sequence. The aforementioned Triple Salchow got 0 from Judge 5; and +1 from the remaining four Judges. The Judges marks for the other three elements with positive GOE ranged from +2 to +4.

Oliviia finished the Free Skate 2.69 points ahead of 2nd position, Lili Liisa SAKS (EST), and 18.35 points ahead of 3rd position, Arina VOEVODINA (EST).

Overall, Oliviia finished 1.58 points ahead of 2nd position, Saks, and 24.45 points ahead of 3rd position, Voevedina.

After the SP, I said Oliviia was held back by her programme content. In the FS, her programme content helped save her. Oliviia made a lot more mistakes than Lili: five of Oliviia's elements had issues, whereas only two of Lili's did. But because the total Base Value of Oliviia's programme was a good bit higher than Lili's, she was still able to get a the highest TES of the field, albeit by only 0.20 points.

But it was the Programme Components Score that Oliviia won the title on. I have watched the FS programmes from both girls, and both programmes were beautiful. But, you could see why there was a difference in PCS. With Lily, you could see she was concentrating during the programme. But for Oliviia, it was coming more naturally.

Well, we don't have to wait long for Oliviia to be in action again, because she will be competing at the Volvo Open Cup in Latvia in a few days time. And hopefully there will be a free stream, as I really want to see Short Programme.

:cheer: WELL DONE OLIVIIA!!! :cheer:

It's a busy time for the Cypriot skaters. This week alone:

  • Stefania and Marilena are entered for the IceChallenge in Graz, 🇦🇹 Austria.
  • Marilena is also entered for the Denkova-Staviski Cup in Sofia, 🇧🇬 Bulgaria, along with Angelina and Ilia.
  • And Oliviia is entered for the Volvo Open Cup in Riga, 🇱🇻 Latvia.

Obviously, amazing though she is, Marilena can't be in two places at once. So, I am predicting that she will be in Sofia. After all, she belongs to the Denkova-Stavisky club, so I doubt if she would miss her club's flagship event.

And on that note, it is very noticible that fellow Denkova-Stavisky club member Varvara is not entered. She must be injured or something.

As for Oliviia, while checking the YouTube channel that the Volvo Open Cup is normally broadcast on to see if there was any sign of streaming yet, I discovered that they streamed Gliss Extra in Haabersti, Estonia, at the weekend. And knowing that Oliviia normally does the domestic events in Estonia, I went looking for the Entries / Results page and, sure enough, she won the FS and overall in Advanced Novices.

I have now posted back-dated reminder posts / reports about Oliviia at Gliss Extra. Only the Day 3 stream is still available, but that is the day that the Advanced Novice Ladies FS was held. So, I was able to watch Oliviia's FS programme, and properly comment on it at least.

I'm looking forward to seeing her SP. And finding out which one she is using, because over the past few months she has announced two different Short Programmes! I had been assuming that one of the programmes was actually her FS, and that saying it was her SP was a mistake in the post. But now that I have seen her FS, it is something completely different.

Volvo Open Cup Advanced Novice 2013-2014 Ladies SP: Results; Protocols

Video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QsC54j7s3CM

Oliviia finished 1st out of 7 in the SP, with a score of 43.14.

Here is what I wrote about the Warm-Up in the competition thread:

Here is what I wrote when she was being introduced:

And here is what I wrote about the programme:

Looking at the Protocols, she had issues with two of the elements. The second element, the Triple Flip, was under-rotated. It had the second biggest GOE hit of the programme, at -0.85, which meant that it went from having the second highest Base Value of the programme to being the second lowest scoring element of the programme. It got -2 from four Judges; and -1 from Judge 2.

In the fourth element, the Triple Loop-Double Loop, the first part was landed on the quarter. It had the biggest GOE hit of the programme, at -0.98. However, that first part also got a bonus point. Which meant that the combination actually scored 0.02 more than it's Base Value. And because it had the highest Base Value of the programme, it remained the highest scoring element of the programme. It got -2 from four Judges; and -1 from Judge 1.

For the remaining elements, the GOE ranged from +0.56 for the penultimate element, the Layback Spin, to +0.99 for the final element, the Step Sequence. All the Judges marks for the elements with positive GOE were either +2 or +3.

Oliviia's programme had a total Base Value that was considerably higher (by 4.10 points) than the programmes of everybody else in the field. Consequently, she had by some margin (7.76 points) the highest Technical Elements Score of the field. She also had by some considerable margin (4.09 points) the highest Programme Components Score of the field.

Oliviia is currently 14.36 points ahead of 2nd position, Niina NAAMANKA (FIN), and 15.19 points ahead of 3rd position, Marija VEISBARTE (LAT).

Having added her SP score to her Competitive History table, I now understand why she was disappointed when her score was announced. Her score here in Riga (LAT) was 0.02 points lower than what she scored on Saturday at Gliss Extra in Haabersti (EST). And it was 0.09 lower than her Absolute PB score for the SP, achieved at the Olympic Winter Cup in Tondiraba (EST) last December.

When you are that close, it is natural to be disappointed at not getting the wee bit more that was needed to do it.

I don't like counting chickens, especially after what happened to my kids in the Senior Pairs SP at the NHK Trophy a few hours before Oliviia did her SP. But, all things being equal, Oliviia already has this in the bag. So, she can afford to just go all out to try to beat the Absolute PB scores for the FS and overall that she achieved in Estonia on Sunday.

So, let's hope she has a good Free Skate and gets those Absolute PB's!

:cheer: WELL DONE OLIVIIA!!! :cheer:

The Advanced Novice 2013-2014 Ladies FS is due to start at 13:45:00 EET (11:45:00 GMT / 12:45:00 CET / 14:45:00 MSK). So 6 hours from now.

The Group 1 Warm-Up is due to start at 13:45:00 EET (11:45:00 GMT / 12:45:00 CET / 14:45:00 MSK). So 6 hours from now.

Oliviia finished 1st out of 7 in the FS, with a score of 92.11. This meant that she remained in 1st position overall, with a score of 135.25.

Here is what I wrote about the Warm-Up in the competition thread:

Here is what I wrote when she was being introduced:

And here is what I wrote about the programme:

Looking at the Protocols, there were only two issues. Funnily enough, both jumps that I thought were beautiful! The first was the Triple Lutz that she opened with, which was landed on teh quarter. It had the biggest GOE hit of the programme, at -1.38, which meant that it went from having the third highest Base Value, to being the fifth highest scoring element of the programme. It got -3 from two Judges; -2 from two Judges; and -1 from Judge 2.

The other was the third element, the Triple Flip, which was under-rotated. It had the scond biggest GOE hit of the programme, at -1.13, which meant that it went from having the third lowest Base Value, to being the lowest scoring element of the programme. It got three -3's; and two -2's.

For the remaining elements, the GOE ranged from +0.14 for two elements, (the second element, the Triple Salchow-Triple Toe, and the seventh element, the Triple Salchow on it's own), to +2.00 for the final element, the Choreographic Sequence. Judge 5 gave -3 for the aforementioned Triple Salchow and +5 for the aforementioned Choreographic Sequence. But, apart from these, all the Judges marks for the elements with positive GOE ranged from 0 to +4.

The two elements that had by miles the highest Base Values also got bonus points. In the fifth element, the Triple Loop-Souble Axel-Double Axel done in sequence, the first of the Double Axels got a bonus point. And since it already had the highest Base Value of the programme, it remained as the highest scoring element of the programme. In the second element, the Triple Salchow-Triple Toe, both jumps got a bonus point. And since it already had the second highest Base Value of the programme, it remained as the second highest scoring element of the programme.

Speaking of Base Values, the total Base Value of Oliviia's programme was 12.04 points higher than the programme with the second highest Base Value, that of Mia KASPAROVIČA (LAT), which in turn was 10.02 points higher than the programme with the third highest Base Value, that of Gloria BAN (EST). So, however they skated, Oliviia was always going to win the Free Skate and Mia was always going to finish second. It was just a matter of deciding the remaining positions.

Oliviia finished the Free Skate 20.17 points ahead of 2nd position, Mia KASPAROVIČA (LAT), and 43.84 points ahead of 3rd position, Marija VEISBARTE (LAT).

Overall, Oliviia finished 41.81 points ahead of 2nd position, Kasparoviča, and 59.03 points ahead of 3rd position, Veisbarte.

To say that Oliviia demolished the field would be an understatement. More significantly, she would have demolished the field in all of the competitions for the older Advanced Novice girls as well.

Much as I like Oliviia winning titles convincingly, I do think it would be better in the long run if she had somebody who could provide close competition for her. Because she will need that to prepare for moving up to Juniors. Unfortunately, nearly all of the skaters that have come close to Oliviia since she moved into Advanced Novices have already moved up to Juniors. From what I can see, the only one left is the girl she was fighting with for the title at Gliss Extra (EST) last week, Lili Liisa SAKS (EST). Lili was competing at the IceChallenge in Graz (AUT) this week, and was just a whisker behind Ophelia Seramoon KRAMER (DEU) in both segments and overall.

Lili is 3 months younger than Oliviia, while Ophelia is over a year younger than both of them. So, hopefully they will be coming up against each other regularly throughout the season, and will be able to push each other forwards.

:cheer: WELL DONE OLIVIIA!!! :cheer:

Amber Cup Advanced Novice Ladies SP: Results; Protocols

No video uploaded yet 😞

Oliviia finished 1st out of 21 in the SP, with a score of 43.74.

Here is what I wrote in the competition thread:

Looking at the Protocols, she had two issues. The second element, the Triple Flip, was landed on the quarter. It had the second biggest GOE hit of the programme, at -1.06, but it also had the second highest Base Value of the programme. And because it also got a bonus point, the negative GOE was nearly completely cancelled out, and it remained as the second highest scoring element of the programme. It got -2 from four Judges; and -1 from Judge 2.

In the fourth element, the Triple Loop-Double Loop, the triple was landed on the quarter. It had the biggest GOE hit of the programme, at -1.31, but because it had the highest Base Value of the programme, it remained as the highest scoring element of the programme. The Judges gave it three -3's; and two -2's.

For the remaining elements, the GOE ranged from +0.44 for the opening element, the Double Axel, to +0.77 for the final element, the Step Sequence. The aforementioned Double Axel also got a bonus point. Apart from a +4 from Judge 1 for the penultimate element, the Layback Spin, all the Judges marks for the elements with positive GOE ranged from 0 to +3. (With most of them being +2 or +3).

Oliviia is currently 0.15 points ahead of 2nd position, Mia KASPAROVIČA (LAT), and 6.43 points ahead of 3rd position, Lindia RANNE (FIN).

After her last competition, I said that I hoped that Oliviia would have somebody this season who could provide her with close competition. I was not imagining it would be this close! We have a duel on our hands! This is going to be a really climax to the Free Skate.

And can I just say that I am so impressed that it is coming from Kasparoviča (who is a month older than Oliviia). She had an absolute nightmare of a skate in the SP at the Volvo Open Cup a couple of weeks ago, finishing in last position with less than half the points that Oliviia got. But she came back and finished in 2nd position in the FS, albeit 20.17 points behind Oliviia. So, it will be interesting to see if that is actually a reflection of where their FS programmes are at, or if the big gap was a hangover from the SP.

The streaming of this event yesterday was a joke. Not only did they miss the first four and a half skaters of the Advanced Novice Ladies SP, but later in the day they were changing stream mid-group, and even mid-programme. :drama: So I have no confidence that we will actually be able to watch Oliviia and Mia's fight for gold.

But, I have my fingers crossed.

:cheer: WELL DONE OLIVIIA!!! :cheer:

The Advanced Novice Ladies FS is due to start at 12:35:00 EET (10:35:00 GMT / 13:35:00 MSK). So 5 hours from now.

Oliviia will be the 21st and final skater to start. So, seventh and final skater to go in Group 3.

The Group 1 Warm-Up is due to start at 14:27:20 EET (12:27:20 GMT / 15:27:20 MSK). So 6h 52m from now.

Oliviia is due to start at 15:09:50 EET (13:09:50 GMT / 16:09:50 MSK). So 7h 44m from now.

But, those times may change if somebody that is due on before her withdraws.

Oliviia finished 1st out of 21 in the FS, with a score of 82.18. This meant that she remained in 1st position overall, with a score of 125.92.

Here is what I wrote about the Warm-Up in the competition thread:

Here is what I wrote when Mia KASPAROVIČA (LAT) was being introduced:

Here is what I wrote about Mia's programme (It is actually relevant here, and I talk about Oliviia at the end):

And here is what I wrote about Oliviia's programme:

Looking at the Protocols, it turns out that Oliviia's beautiful skate was actually not as good as I thought. Of the nine elements, six of them were completely negative. The other three were completely positive.

It will depress me to go through them all, so I will summarise. All of the individual jumps were under-rotated. So was the second part of the Triple Salchow-Triple Toe that she did as her second element. However, the first part got a bonus point, which meant that, because it had the second highest Base Value of the programme, it remained as the second highest scoring element of the programme.

In the fifth element, the Triple Loop-Double Axel-Double Axel done in sequence, the Loop was landed on the quarter. However, it and the first Axel both got a bonus point, which meant that, because it had the highest Base Value of the programme, it remained as the highest scoring element of the programme.

The GOE for the elements with negative GOE ranged from -0.94 for the opening element, the Triple Lutz, to -0.69 for the seventh element, the Triple Salchow. Apart from two -1's for the sequence of jumps, all the Judges marks for the elements with negative GOE were -3 or -2.

The GOE for the elements with positive GOE ranged from +0.69 for the penultimate element, the Flying Sit Spin, to +1.50 for the final element, the Choreographic Sequence. Apart from a +1 from Judge 5 for the aforementioned Flying Sit Spin, and a +4 from Judge 3 for the aforementioned Choreographic Sequence, all the Judges marks for the elements with positive GOE were +2 or +3.

Nevertheless, she did get the highest Technical Elements Score andProgramme Components Score of the entire field.

Oliviia finished the Free Skate 6.75 points ahead of 2nd position, Mia KASPAROVIČA (LAT), and 13.39 points ahead of 3rd position, Lindia RANNE (FIN).

Overall, Oliviia finished 6.90 points ahead of 2nd position, Kasparoviča, and 19.82 points ahead of 3rd position, Ranne.

Maybe my glasses are too rose coloured when it comes to Oliviia, but I would never have thought that that Free Skate was anything other than a good skate. She had me totally convinced.

Stefania showed at the Gordion Cup that if your programme has a very high Base Value, you can still win with a disaster skate. Whilst Oliviia was in a different situation (it wasn't by any means a disaster skate, and the Base Value of Mia's programme wasn't that much lower), having a programme with a high Base Value certainly helped.

I was going to say that between now and her next competition, she needs to work on trying to eliminate the under-rotations. But, she's actually in action again in a few days, at the Santa Claus Cup, so she needs to prepare for that. And anyway, it might just have been an off day, because she no under-rotations in the Short Dance.

:cheer: WELL DONE OLIVIIA!!! :cheer:
