First look at Weir's new Short Program

I was hoping for a program with a bit more zip to it. The white part of his outfit looks like a weird Halloween skeleton costume...

Yeah I found that program kind of bland...just a rehash of previous styles and nothing new. I'm not sure if maybe it's the music that doesn't seem very exciting or emotional somehow.

For a first performance of this program, I think Johnny did very well. His first GP isn't until Cup of China, so he has 5 weeks to refine it.

He seems happy and relaxed, and that is a great sign for Johnny.

It will be interesting to see the kind of year he has. As I said on another thread I think this is a make-or-break year for him. He has tough GP assignments, Lambiel and Lysacek in China, and Lambiel and Buttle in Russia, skaters who have owned him the last couple years. He will need to be doing a quad, skating consistently and confidently, and doing COP-maxed out programs.

I like Weir´s new sp music, it fits him perfectly. About the programme itself I had the feeling that I have seen the same programme already many times, even his costume looks familiar. The programme is really beautiful though.

He looks relaxed yet strong and determined though a couple of the jump landings could the been cleaner. Appears almost a bit improvised at times but once he is more experienced with the program it should make him competitive. Now if he can just land a clean quad combo once in every competition he could have a shot at the podium.

Honestly, I'm not too surprised that Kytareva could not come up with anything more exciting. She is a technical coach, not so much a choreographer. The program does, however, have a nice flow to it.

BTW. Here (http://youtube.com/watch?v=2F5tWb0TALY) is a video of what Tikhonov with partner Bolshova did with this same music (albeit with vocals) for the Russian skating with the stars show (skating to Ivona and Avos goes up to the point where Bolshova takes the microphone; after that, it's something else). Also, in case anyone is wondering what "Yunona and Avos" is. It's a Russian rock opera (brief synopsis, very poorly translated, is here). With lyrics by one of the most popular poets of the time, Voznesensky, it instantly became wildly popular. Two TV movie and a regular movie have been made of it since. Both Weir an Bolshova & Tikhonov skate to the most iconic song from the opera.

Neither the music nor the program particularly moves or excites me. However, he seems to be in good shape for this point in the season and I am still optimistic for him having a great season.

At least Johnny is trying something different. Little known music (a new arrangement of a piece that's not widely known outside Russia) and unique choreography.

Where as Morosov has given Takahashi that warhorse, Tchaikovsky's Romeo and Juliet. It's the same program that Morosov gives to every skater, with a warhorse as musical backdrop. He gave Miki Ando Carmen to skate to this season...groan.

Johnny's program moves me because the music and the moves are unique and original and you won't see them from anyone else this season (where as there will probably be at least a dozen Romeo & Juliets and two dozen Carmens).

Can someone edit the title...let's keep all of the Men's new programs in here.

TAKAHASHI's new Long Program (going for 2 Quads and 2 Triple Axles this year):

JEREMY ABBOTT'S new Long Program:

both Bradley and Abbott have excellent programs. Ryan's change of pace suits him and Bradley looking much more mature this yeaar. Both, however, must work that technical.

Thanks, GoldMedalist!

Johnny is definitely stronger compared with the beginning of his last season. Honestly, I prefer a lot more his last season's SP to this one. This year's SP seems a combination of several his old programs. He even used some movements from last season's LP. It's not an exciting new program but I can see his hard training has started to pay off. I don't like the choreography of this SP. As the season goes, I am sure he will make it a lot better.

I'm underwhelmed by Johnny's SP as well. It does seem very derivative.

Hopefully it will develop as the season goes along.

Or, maybe this will just be a year where he focuses on the technical -- getting all the big jumps consistent and maxing out his points as the CoP tells him.

I'd actually maybe prefer that, if that's what he needs to become THE BEST IN THE WORLD for the 2008-2009 and 2009-2010 seasons.

I do in deed like his return to the Otonal style of his present SP. The man's flow over the ice and the movements of his arms and hands tell it all if you like artistry.

As I remarked before. Takahashi, Joubert and Lambiel may have a Quad in their SPs, and all three will have about the same PCS scores of Johnny if not more. It's a different game between Competition and Artistry.

Watched his new program, couldn't have the music too high because I'm at work but I do like that he is back to his Otonal style.  For a beginning, I think he did great.

The only think I saw really, really, really wrong.........Johnny do something with your hair.......leave the bangs out!!!!
