Free Dance - I heart Davis/White !!

i wonder how hard it is for marina and sphilband to coach these top teams especially when they compete against each other... I wonder if they have favorites... etc. etc.

V&M are good skaters who deserve better choreography and programs than the ones Igor gives them.
Sorry, but for the scores here to make sense, you need to subtract like 5-10 points.

So now everyone has a nicely inflated score, except of course for poor Tanith and Ben, who chose to stay home in their quest to actually be the best ice dancers in the world, and by enough that they might have a chance at winning Worlds. Whether they do should they truly come out with all guns blazing remains to be seen.

Well, that was it. I don't know about you guys, but I feel a bit underwhelmed by the performances in the last flight. Maybe I'm just sleepy and the feed was grainy and fuzzy at times and the funky camera work...

I'll let those still with active brain cells comment on the performances...

How did you all know the time to turn on the ESPN360? The Dance is over and I didn't turn it on until 5am EST. All I got was the logo.

Is there any more to watch today?

Joe

You should have waited a few more minutes for the men's free to start! They're resurfacing the ice at the moment, after which the final two groups will go.

I wouldn't say the marks are that much more inflated then Euros. The top teams are all within the same range. Judges are prob very aware that people (like the posters on here) will be comparing the scores between the 2. Therefore if they didn't keep the scores in the same range we'd have post declaring the fix was in for the Rus already. Oh wait we do already have people claiming that!!!!!

is it just me or did anyone else think this was the worst performance of the season for Scott and Tessa. Maybe it was the camera doing tricks on me, but I didn't think they were as fast as in their previous performances. I thought Scott was much slower than usual esp. in the rotational lift. I liked their costume though. Yeah, I have to say 104 was very very inflated. I actually thought their performance at Skate Canada was their best......

Hmm I didnt like the costume change actually. Well hers was okay, but his I didn't like at all.

I think the costume change is what threw me off. However, as to their skating, Scott definitely had trouble on the straight line lift, and that last lift seemed to have a bit of a problem as well. I wonder if its an altitude problem? All the skaters seemed to be gasping for air when they got off the ice.

yeah I agree. all their lifts looked kind of wobbly to me.

I think they were all gasping for air because they were tired.... not because of the altitude

Also I've noticed that Tessa's getting taller... might be hard for Scott to lift... and he's tiny! He's like 5.6 according to wikipedia.

Yeah, it definitely wasn't their best performance. I thought their lifts were a little shaky.

I agree. I like both V/M and D/W but they both seemed to give sub-par performances- or at least they did based on the blurry stream I saw. They both struggled on different things. V/M seemed to struggle with lifts- a couple of them seemed to wobble. (Hahahaha, just read everyone else's posts that came up as I was typing----- great minds think alike.) D/W seemed to struggle with speed and unison- it's like they were trying to put their all into the emotional portrayal but that made it hard to maintain their normal speed and flow.

Both couples must be exhausted from this past month with both Canadian Nationals and US Nationals and now traveling to Asia. I think in the end they're both looking to peak over the entire season and this FD is just a small part of it. Here's hoping they both go home get some rest and arrive refreshed and ready for Worlds.

On the other hand, Nav/Bom gave a much more confident performance than they had at Nationals. They seemed to be having a blast.

As for the inflated scores, I don't think the judging panel is doing anyone favors by over-inflating things at this event. It makes it impossible to give athletes a personal best score when it means the most at Worlds or GPF.

It may just be me, but Tessa looks like she's bigger than she was earlier this season! And those lifts they do aren't easy -- Scott is in a really difficult lunge position in that straight line lift. We better hope he grows fast.

I think it also gives the skaters a false sense of security. If they get a good score on an element they really didn't do as well, they might not go back and put as much work into it -- meaning they might get really dinged for it at Worlds.

Or Tessa is on more strict diet. It's more practical.

I noticed too that Tessa have grown bigger over the last 2 years too, but I'm sure it has absolutely nothing to do with her not dieting enough or anything. She would be deemed skinny in real life, only our concern here is for Scott and his ability to lift. When she was younger she was a beanpole, but now that she's becoming a woman she's just getting to look more like one, with hips, breasts, and shoulders a bit broader, etc....They kind of remind me of Victor Kraatz and Shae-Lynn Bourne; as Shae-Lynn grew bigger I noticed their lifts got less bold and they concentrated instead on footwork and other things. V/M on the other hand have not held back, and I commend both skaters, but esp. Scott Moir, for doing so.It's just a bit unfortunate that Scott tends to be kind of small for a male ice dancer. And omparing Tessa to Meryl Davis for instance, all I can say is they have 2 different body types, not that one eats more than the other, etc. I just want to avoid saying stuff like that in case the athletes read our forum posts and get discouraged by what we say here....
