Gracie Gold

Dear Gracie-open letter to Ms. Gold

Dear Grace,

After Skate America I felt really bad seeing how frightening competition is becoming for you. I thought about this a few times in my insane life and feel you need to learn perspective most of all. I have read you feel worthless when not perfect from the lips of your coach and even Ashley Wagner who says great things about you. Then I looked on the edge to peruse the topics and was surprised to see you also feel you are not thin enough. I bet you do great in general in practice. I think you might read Goldenskate and I think in general you will see you have many fans in the world all pulling for you. If you feel competition is nerve wracking maybe you should just tell yourself what MK always said- it is a sport not brain surgery. I just wanted to say how fortunate you are to have a stunning figure and be so pretty as well as very bright. Plus you have parents that have encouraged your abilities and the money to have a top coach and incredibly beautiful programs and dresses.

But if people say pounds need to come off you can choose to see yourself as we all do- beautiful and athletic and gifted. You have it. I think you must recall you are a two time Us champ and how great you skated at the Olympics. You seem to be losing your confidence. Maybe you are tired of competing and maybe you don't love skating so much. There is much more and your life is just beginning. I wish you knew how admired you are and if you simply don't have the nerves needed to skate in front of big crowds- well that is most skaters. You are already a champion and we love watching you but don't let us or your parents or Frank or some Usfsa nerd tell you you are overweight. You are not. Actually you look way healthier and stronger than many ladies. We believe in your talent but if skating competitively is stressful then do what makes you happy. There is nothing to be frightened of. A fall? An under rotated jump? What is the worst that can happen? A bad injury which we hope you avoid by excellent warm ups and a great trading routine. Thank you for the sheer beautiful moments. You have made a huge mark in our hearts.

You have it all Gracie and winning Olympic Gold medals in skating doesnt even make skaters rich anymore. Please stop beating yourself up and do what makes you happy. And we will all support that. Realize what you have and that success is not only defined by the gold and silver medals.

I hope people here tell you why they have enjoyed your career and that someone says something in this open letter thread that reaches you. Nothing to fear Gracie. You are a champion. If you find joy in skating again we will be happy I am sure. Good luck and just have fun out there.

Your fan regardless of outcomes,

Skateluvr

I'm going to make a video this weekend or next to announce "The Gracie Gold Encoragement Project."

Does anyone know her fanmail address? It's probably on the front of this thread. Haha.

I know what it's like to fall into a slump on something important to me, litte bits of encouragement are important in these times. When I make the video I was going to make a thread on the main forum.

If you have any ideas for this project let me know. So far I was going to ask for digital pdfs or jpegs of encouraging quotes and photos to compile in a book that we could mail to her. I was thinking of also taking in other gifts or funds to buy some stuff to make a fun gift box but I'll probably keep it simple with the book.

That's a great idea! I'm down to contribute to your project. I've fallen into a slump too(maybe I'm in one right now), but I could never imagine going through it publicly--the pressure would be inmensefully worse. Lets cheer Gracie up.

Gracie started getting ready for the season late and was not confident in her fitness level. She expressed this as the reason for her disappointing performances. She can feel beautiful while still acknowledging she has a bit more work to do to be prepared to skate a strong LP. Please stop with the subtle attacks on Frank.

I've been collecting encouraging quotes to put in the book from everywhere, but I think a message from her fans will also be helpful. I want the book to be a nice medium size too so she could carry it with her for encouragement whenever she needs it. I was thinking adding to the package would be fun too. I am just hoping I can get it to her by mail, I was thinking about driving up to the toyota center but would be strange, the fan mail address is probably the best way to go.

I'd like to contribute, let me know what you need. Do you need quotes or messages? I was thinking of knitting her a gift but I'm a slow knitter so it would take some time. I'm not sure how to help her feel less pressure.

I need both quotes and messages, I am going to set up an email box specifically for this. I am assuming the messages will help in some small way, this project is all about showing kindness and letting her know that somant of us support her no matter what the results are.

That sounds great. I have a collection of quotes and a personal message. I'll send it when you set up the email. Thank you!

I'm not sure how to get the messages to you, but I'm definitely down.

On a related note, I have a skating-related video editing account on Instagram and a similar channel on YouTube, so I could put something up on those to help with the publicity part if you need help getting the word out.

Perfect! I have set up the email account that's how the messaging will work. I will post all the details tomorrow or Monday!

The Encouragement Project: Gracie Gold

Good Evening everyone!!!

I have recently been watching the discussions around Gracie and a couple other US skaters when I had the idea to start the encouragement project.

Kind words seem to be few and far between in the world around us. I want to be the change. For this project I am making Gracie Gold an encouragment BOOK! I have a video announcement to add but I haven't been able to upload it!

Over the next month I will be gathering encouraging quotes, and personalized messages from the fans to Grace along with photos you have taken.

What I need from you are messages and quotes that you'd like to say to Gracie. Send them to the email I set up:

[email protected]

I also need people to participate with spreading the word around social media! Like I said I will have a video uploaded soon to share the news.

This project will end December 1st, I hope to mail the book to Gracie before Christmas. In that vein if anyone knows her current fanmail address I need that haha.

I hope to do this for other US skaters in the future! We'll see how this goes!

Thanks for setting this up - wonderful idea. I hope to contribute some pics & a message of encouragement for Gracie.

I'm still in the progress of listening, but in the latest Ice Talk podcast they discuss a bit Gracie undertrained status at SA and the really non existing weight issues

I listened to that also and it made me feel less worried. I liked how the reporter commented on Gracie's honesty. I have always loved that about her - she is just real and sometimes that is raw. She isn't just a puppet or for that matter a robot. It's her vulnerability that I think is so endearing.

Her post-Skate America Instagram post sounded positive as well.
