awful competition

Excuse spelling

Phaneuf: really bad...ugly crossovers...just heavy all the time. fell, hand down, popped a jump too...just not engaging at all

Ando: Clean (3flip-3Loop combination)...however, did two 3Lutz, neither in combination...SLOW, lifeless

Onda: fell on something...can't remember (think it was her 3flip). doubled her second 3lutz... slow, boring, ugly skating. looked more like a robot than ever.

Rochette: double-footed and underrotated second 3toe in 3toe-3toe. doubled first 3Lutz...hand down on 3 flip, so she had to double the 3Sal in the 3flip/3sal sequence...she's done the program a lot better...looked NERVOUS.

Arakawa: absolute mess. Doubled both 3 lutz. turned out after the 3Sal in her 3Sal-3Toe combo...(no three toe after turnout). fell bad on 2axel. SLOW SLOW SLOW...was halfway into her last spin when the music stopped.

Slutskaya: nice first 3 lutz...big, and no forward lurching...screwed up her 3sal combo and did a 3sal, 2loop, 2 toe. curled in on itself...UGLY...counted 4 beillmanns. really awful, forward lurching, hands all over the place 3flip. didn't have spark, speed, or smile.

as for the men...buttle was good...fell on a 3axel.

Sandhu was really bad (technically). consistently inconsistent, once again. fell a few times, popped and doubled a few.

Joubert: ehhhh...just no passion. fell on a 3 sal (or maybe it was a toe? or something else? i don't know).

Li had a great performance and loved the crowd (actually started clapping to encourage them to clap along)...he was clean...2 quads (one in a 4t-2t combo...other was a 4sal) boring, uninteresting choreography, but squeeky clean technically.

plushekno: perfectly clean. his 4t-3t-2L was really good. straight, clean, and FLOW out of it. really good. good energy, but not too much. great skate.

Hey, Doug Log, thanks for the live report. Are you in Beijing? Welcome to Golden Skate. I hope you like it here!

OT question but does China have an up and coming female skater in the works? I'm just wondering why they haven't had one since Chen Lu.

Oh my goodness, they just showed the standings after the short and it showed Shizuka being from the U.S. ???? :p

I'm watching Miki skate now - a good improvement from when I last saw her- but the commentators said her last triple lutez was not going to count since she already did one before and even if she had done that in combination it still would not have counted since she already had done 3 combinations so why did she do it if she knew it wasn't going to count or did she?

Rochette's program was ok. Not feeling the music nor the costume.

Shizuka skated very mediocre. I tried liking this program from the first time I saw it at Campbell's but honestly it was a bore overall. I used to think that she was Michelle's biggest threat. She landed her jumps tentatively and there was hardly any spark in her program. I think the pressure of being World Champ plus skating against Irina is wrecking havoc on her nerves and it shows. I don't know if she'll be able to contend for gold in Moscow.

Irina's program while not obviously perfect was the best out of the entire bunch. It was nice to see her skate again after not seeing her since her illness. She had a lot of speed but used the Bielman spin I think 4 or 5 times not including the two spirals she had with a Bielman position. She had a few minor mistakes but I'm sure she'll work those out at worlds. I honestly cannot wait to see her and Michelle skate against each other....may the best lady win:) Hopefully either her or Michelle. It's good to see the oldies going at it.

I loved Irina's program, but unbelievable as it may be, she has improved A LOT since just last season, despite her serious illness. She had such energy and confidence. Her stretch is better, her positions improved. I absolutely loved her program and performance. Amazing lady!

Poor Shizuka. No spark. I know it was part of the costume, but the effect of that blue made it look like she had a dark bikini on under a white dress. She always seems to have some type of of costume problem; I don't know why.

Joanie did a credible job, she's a contender, but she has a lot of work to do on her presentation skills still. She's young, though, so I expect to see a big improvement yearly.

Miki has improved her posture and positions a lot. I just do not understand why she is doing level 1 in-between moves.

Why did Ando do a 2nd 3 lutz at the end of the program, even though she knew she would receive no credit for it? Just curious...
