Hanyu update/Olympic berth criteria

Does Evgena have already decided on the Olympic representation regardless of her state at the Olympic Games?
No matter how famous athlete it is, I think that there is no selection that ignored the condition at the Olympics.

Let me submit my version of the translation of selection criteria by JSF.

1st spot
Winner of the Nationals

2nd spot
To be selected among those who fulfill one of the following criteria after a comprehensive evaluation

a)2nd and 3rd finisher of the Nats
b)two highest finishers at GPF

3rd spot
to be selected after a comprehensive evaluation among those who fulfill one of the following criteria:

a)meeting a criterion a) or b) as stated for the selection of the 2nd spot but not selected for the spot

b)three highest ranked skaters in the ISU World Ranking at the time of Nats

c)three highest ranked skaters in the ISU Seasons World Ranking at the time of Nats

d)three highest ranked skaters in the ISU Seasons Best Scores at the time of Nats

*To participate in the Nats as the final qualifying meet is mandatory. However, if a skater who podiumed in a World Championship in the past is unable to do so due to unavoidable circumstances such as injury, the said skater can still be selected upon evaluation of his/her records obtained before the occurrence of such circumstances according to the above criteria for the selection and of the prospect of his/her possible conditions at the time of the event.

Hanyu can go to Olympics or climb the Olympus, swim the Arctic circle and go skating in Antarctica. Japan decides.

If so, hanyu only has to take part in the National and prove what he can do.

There is 50 days until Oly, the last thing JSF should push is risking Yuzu’s health and make him participate at JN. And looks like JSF already move on to the PR work, preparing everyone for his WD.
We are talking about a future event, it’s gambling, no one could tell his condition in 50 days, and Yuzu prove it many time in his career, he has every quality and potential to be at the top.

Yuzuru Hanyu, Inflammation also in tendons and bones "When is it possible to resume practice yet, is not decided yet" JSF announced additional comments.

An additional comment by Hanyu Yuzuru (22) = ANA =, who is aiming for return from the right ankle injury at figure skating Sochi Olympic gold medalist, was announced through the Japan Skating Federation on 14th.
Tendons and bones also have inflammation, which means that the practice resuming date is undecided.

An additional content arrived in the comment that was announced after the Board of Governors' Meeting on 13 th.

"However, if a skater who podiumed in a World Championship in the past is unable to do so due to unavoidable circumstances such as injury, the said skater can still be selected upon evaluation of his/her records obtained before the occurrence of such circumstances according to the above criteria for the selection and of the prospect of his/her possible conditions at the time of the event."

This seems to be perfectly straightforward. After Japanese Nationals the federation will make a decision based on their best medical guess as to whether Hanyu can be ready to go by the time of the Olympics. Unless the injury is more catastrophic than reported, the decision will surely be to put Hanyu on the team and hope for the best.

Presumably alternates will be designated at the same time. If Hanyu's recovery does not go as well as hoped and he is unable to perform, he withdraws and the substitute takes his place.

I think that there is little is to be gained by this endless rehash of speculation. Let's just wait and see.

I would expect that the Russian Federation would adopt a similar position with respect to Medvedeva. But Russia usually waits until after Europeans to name it's Olympic team. Evgenia is expected to be healed by the time of Europeans, so the Russian Federation can wait until closer to the Olympic Games before making a final decision. We'll see.

If Yuzuru Hanyu isn't named on the Olympic team, I promise to land a 5T

Only a 5T? I see your challenge and I raise you a 5T4T combo! Do you think that's enough?

I mean, parsing through this thread, I really think I need to hand in my hanyu-fan badge. While I follow news of him, I apparently am not dedicated enough to open an entire thread to discuss his injuries and fear-monger.

Other wiser guys have parsed through the JSF statements and criterias better than I could, so I'll leave the serious stuff to others. @Mods: a tiny suggestion to move this thread to a blackhole? Rather than anything productive/constructive coming out, this is becoming a drama-rama-llama thread, that is centered on stirring up more drama than necessary. There are better ways to announce updates to his condition.

Hilarious and witty. :laugh2:

Hanyu is not my favorite, but I do miss his presence and his star power in the field. The absence of Hanyu, Javi, Patrick and Boyang altogether in competition gave me another look at the field and found some joy, but still I need more adrenaline and thrills from men's events. I can't imagine the Olympics without Hanyu as well as the aforementioned skaters. I wish him speedy recovery.

Hmm, current reigning World and Olympic champion.... Seems pretty obvious he'll be named and the first alternate better be ready. Like Kwan and Emily Hughes in 2006. Even though Kwan wasn't even a reigning world medalist or ever an Olympic champion. I just hope Hanyu recovers in time. It seemed sagacious of Dick Button who was interviewed a week or two before his fall that Button's advice was "Don't overtrain or risk injuring yourself".

Nothing new, but Asahi (a major newspaper in Japan) reported today that Yuzuru Hanyu "doesn't know yet when he can resume on-ice training." Never mind Nationals, will he make it to the Olympics? :sad46:
Men's fortunes are on a wheel, which in its turning suffers not the same man to prosper for ever. Herodotus

Brian is in this moment in Spain. I assume it's for the Spanish Nationals, which are this weekend, with Javi, but I don't think he would come if Yuzuru Hanyu was predicted to be in the ice this weekend (because I assume he'll be training full time when he's back, and Spanish Nationals aren't that important to Javi, not when he can win them with triples)
Get well soon, Yuzu, we miss you

Thank you for your information! Good luck to Javier in Spanish nationals :)

JSF and ISU would go to every temple in Japan to pray for Hanyu's health. They desperately need him at the Olympics. Anyone who thinks Hanyu might not be chosen by JSF clearly has some mental issue.

The JSF might desperately need him at the Olympics but even without Hanyu it's going to be a very interesting men's competition and I don't think anyone will be disappointed - least of all the ISU. Hanyu isn't a shoo-in anymore for that OGM. I do wish him a speedy recovery as his participation will definitely increase the interest.

I don't know why someone on a previous page was insisting that whoever gets chosen instead of Hanyu, if he's not ready, should be a medal contender. That's a very tall order in this field. And it may not even matter to the federation. The writing on the wall is that Shoma will be the next olympic champion.
