Hanyu's skating edges

It isn't a fan fest question- it was directed to actual SKATERS for theor opinion. Fan fest means gushing only right?

Girl, if people spent time only gushing about Yuzuru in his fanfest it wouldn't be half the pages it has. It ranges from educational discussions of lisfranic injury and how to do a handstand to Godzilla and dish washing.

Although I've also done my fair share of gushing.

However the most expected topic of the year is Costume!Discussion.

I wouldn't call that torture. It's quite a nice way to die :laugh2:

Let's not turn this thread into a bash. It's meant to troll anyways :)

No it isn't. Don't judge my sincere questions. Gkelley thank you. I don't want to hear from users who think they know skating but just watch it. I asked for SKATERS to comment. So quit the childish insults. I noticed this a lot in the FP but maybe it was part fatigue how he skated. He looked exhausted. Please don't personalize a skating question meant for skaters not arm chair users. Thanks.

And the possible jump layout.
Costumes win, though. :)

Wow. Shut up, everyone - the royalty is speaking...

Nope, not right. For example we spent a vast amount of time worrying about him doing quads at the end of a program that we are losing lots of hair as a result.

Lol. I stay out of gigantic years long threads. I like a lot of skaters but find there are more fair discussions. The fan threads have rules that you I thought that there can't be any criticisms- so I avoid them. Between just watching the GP and reading some edge discussions- that's is my time limit. But do enjoy the fan feats and they make folks feel safe from attacks by rival fans.. I am sure much good info is buried in these book length offerings. :agree:

What's a man-bun?

Eta: I googled. Well, those movie snippets kinda tell us how he'd look with a man-bun? If we imagine hair instead of shaved middle of the head, that is.

My my even I know what is a man bun because top figure skaters have been wearing them for years? And Moria I know you love to snip but aren't you European? For some reason I thought you were and manly buns are all over The world.

Perhaps you have heard and seen the gold medal winning Team at the last Olympics. Tat and Max? He was always sporting a man bun for a long time. I barely get out and watch little TV. And it's impossible not to notice men with man buns.

Pray tell do you live under a rock in some obscure country? Thank goodness you have Internet there because I for one would miss your oh so intelligent posts. 😜

Wow, thanks for these. The detail!!! Good stuff.

This channel is great, it has a lot of HD old school skating videos. It's easier to find the ones post-2000 in HD randomly uploaded but sometimes you cand find a bit older ones. There's some channels with 90's ones and half-decent quality if you can endure. If you can search for the one you want in japanese It would be even better. :dance2: However, 70's videos are hopeless.

I think Moria basically just didn't know the english words for it. Because, well, at least when I didn't know the words the image that used to pop in my head of 'man bun' was a bread with a mustache. hides into oblivion.

That's the most ecpected topic of every single year...

You do realize that for 90% of Europeans English isn't a native a language?

This is how the mind of an ESL person works when they see words they understand separately but not together:

1. There is a hairstyle called "bun"
2. "bun" is a bread roll.
3. "buns" are buttocks.
4. Read books* in which a man was described to have hair in a small "bun"
5. Never encounterd "man-bun"
6. There's a hairstyle described as "ponytail".
7. Read/heard men described as having a "ponytail".
8. Never seen differentiating between a "ponytail" and "man-ponytail"
9. Mind passes over the possibility that "man-bun" is a hairstyle due to 4-8. Also passes over the bread rolls because what the heck.
10. That leaves buttocks.
11. Skating fans have been known to notice skaters' buttocks and comment on them
12. Thoughts: are they talking about buttocks? It's true that Yuzuru doesn't have as prominent buttocks as some other skaters but why would they be talking about just one?
13. Google to the rescue!
14. KNOWLEDGE ACQUIRED

*Actually, it was fanfiction. Captain America fanfiction.

I think Moria basically just didn't know the english words for it. Because, well, at least when I didn't know the words the image that used to pop in my head of 'man bun' was a bread with a mustache. hides into oblivion.

Aaand Lambari's mind didn't pass over the bread roll! :laugh2:

Don't waste your time asking here. As you can see, his fans take over the thread and they make it hard for others to post.
If you want to talk figure skating then I would go to fsuniverse.net instead.

Five years on GS with 3000+ posts and can't recognize that Hanyu has deeper edges than Uno... and you think the OP is asking a question seriously... :reye:

The 'Reply' button is free. If no one bothered to use a counterargument then there's not much that others can do. At least for me, I would love to hear you thoughts.

Agree that FSUniverse is a good forum but not much updated. GS has higher number of trolls but also much more varied discussion. Also, the competition section there isn't free for most part of the year. The parody interviews are great though.

You and everybody else is free to answer the original question (?) with whatever argumente you see fit.

I've talked to quite a few skaters before and none were ever even close to calling Yuzu's edges shallow. Pretty much the contrary. And if no ~skaters~ feel the need to answer to this, maybe that should also tell you something.

PS: As a side note, while this might have not worked in the fan fest, it could have simply been a post in the specific competition thread instead of an own thread too.

When I think of deep edges, I would usually look in the step sequences and transitional edge work before the jump landings or two-foot highlight moves such as spread eagles, although those can also certainly show deep edges.

Aside from the depth of the lean, I would also consider speed and acceleration, flow (maintaining an even glide rather than continuously losing and regaining speed), and the security of the edge (no wobbles).

Agility (ability to change directions quickly and efficiently) is also valuable, but not directly related to the depth of the edges and sometimes works against it. Maintaining or gaining speed through multiple turns and steps is certainly an indication of good edge skills.

It seems we tend to see more quick steps and changes from smaller skaters and longer-held edges from larger skaters: think Orser vs. Boitano.

For the Shin Amano fans, here he is competing ~20 years ago:

Gkelly has answered the thread question in a thoughtful and clear way.
Thank you!
My conclusion: In the last third of his FP at NHK, he lost a bit of steam and his edges got shallower, however, if you watch the first 2/3s of his FP you can see he has great flow and speed across the ice, seamless transitions into his jumps, and continued speed while doing fast turns and steps. Therefore, on the whole his edge work was good. -Still room for improvement for the slowing down at the end ( as most skaters do at the end of their programs).

Not to get into an edge war but Uno has some of the deepest exit edges to his jumps
Uno's "deep exit edges"... happen when he is not fully in control of his rotation on exit (which happens often), forcing him into a sharp 180-degree turn. Yes, his edge is deep on those occasions, but it's half-way to a "turn out" on the jump - not something to admire, and not what I'd call "good flow" out of the jump.

And Uno has absolutely no transitions. I don't know how he gets those overscored pcs.
a) I think you are confused about what transitions are. They're basically all the moves a skater makes (other than stroking/crossovers) in between elements. PCS Transitions score is a measure of the number, quality and difficulty etc of a skater's Transitions. Transitions do not only occur before/after a jump, although they frequently do, to get GoE bullet points for difficult/creative entry/exit...

b) Uno has plenty of quality transitions.

c) There is more to PCS than just Transitions.

Yes, the exits on Shoma's more strained jumps tend to get the kind of landing that makes you worry for his hips and his knees.

My own theory is that Patrick (and other shorter skaters like Han Yan) have very deep edges due to the lower center of gravity and more stability, whereas Yuzu (and other beanpole skaters, eg Jin) with higher center of gravity move with less stability, hence harder to maintain deep edges, except for certain moves, eg glides, spread eagle.

When it comes to jumps, though, the beanpoles can leap higher and spin faster.

So I love to watch Patrick skate and Yuzu jump.

As for Shoma, I find the 2nd half of his FS packed full of crossovers and little else. I think someone counted, there were 24 in total?

I think the person who asked the question know what a man-bun is and has seen one before but probably do not know the common term for it. It would be embarrassing if he/she assumed that it is the man's buttocks that is being talked about.
