First of all, it is great to see that we are back to 2 Challenger events in North America next season. Although, it is disappointing that there are still none in the Asia / Pacific region.

With regards the Major Championships, it is interesting to see the lists of candidates for all the 2019-20 events.

So, after all our griping, we now know that Four Continents will finally be returing to North America in 2019. And Junior Worlds will (yet again) be in Europe.

It looks like Croatia is really determined to get holding a Major in 2019, as their federation has applied for everything they are eligible for! Personally, I would love to see them get Senior Worlds, as Zagreb has already hosted Europeans once and Junior Worlds twice in the period 1998-2018 (see here)

Tallinn has hosted both Europeans and Junior Worlds once in the same time period, so maybe they should get Junior Worlds again to allow somewhere else to get Europeans.

By the way, the Ukraine has never hosted a Major in the period 1998-2018, so I would love to see Europeans go there.

But, is there any sign of the outstanding locations for the remaining Major Championships of the previous season being announced?

According to the table I made out for my distribution study, we are still waiting for confirmation of the locations for:

2017 Grand Prix Final
2018 Four Continents
2018 Junior Worlds

Also, has the FISG decided yet whether the 2018 Senior World Championships will be staged in Milan or in Turin?

Hopefully these will be confirmed soon.

As someone who has lived at high elevation their whole life... i hope I someday get to go somewhere high enough in elevation to know what you all are complaining about in Colorado Springs... cuz I just am conditioned to not notice. I actually think the dryness out here is more of a factor that a lot of people think. We don't really have much in the way of humidity in Colorado... at all. I had one bag of chips go stale from humidity last year and that was novel "this does not happen here" event. I can't even remember the least time it as humid enough for that to happen.

I would be very happy to see 4CC back in Colo Springs. My better half and I actually did talk about going last time it was there in 2012, but i was not as into skating then and we woke up way to hung over to bother with it so we did not. Looking at how was there i really really regret it.

Thank you.

Thank you!!!  :points:

So, the 2018 Junior Worlds are going to Bulgaria. That will be the FIFTH time Junior Worlds have gone to Sofia since 1998! :rolleye:

That's A QUARTER of all the Junior World Championships in my study period! :jaw:

This is getting ridiculous. Is Junior Worlds the only thing that the Bulgarian Federation has been putting in for? Like, you would have thought that if they put in for something else (say, Europeans), the ISU would have given that to them instead.

Or, is this a sign of the lack of candidates to host Junior Worlds...?

I'll update my tables in the distribution thread with these changes at a later stage. Right now, I'm going to bed. :bed:

I hope the USFSA doesn't wait until the last minute to announce the site for the 2018 US Nationals like they did Kansas City for 2017. And I sincerely hope it's West of the Rockies so we don't run into inclement weather. The East Coast in January is so "iffy" with snow, ice, etc.

Me neither although I think less Americans will withdraw than usual, I still remember the JGP event very clearly, the girls were always gasping for air

As for the location for Worlds I'm not sure they'll want to hold a 3rd European Worlds after Helsinki and Turin, I'm going to assume it'll go to Japan again, after all it's probably more profitable.

The last time it was in CS, many top skaters were there: Takahashi, Chan, Mao Asada, Davis and White, Virtue and Moir, Ashley Wagner, the Shibutanis. I am excited to see it will be in the US again, but wish I didn't have to wait three years!

The elevation of the Springs is very difficult for asthmatics and people with stamina issues or even a common cold. I found the last 4ccs held there very painful to watch, as one skater after another turned green and gasped frighteningly.

I wish USFSA would try to develop another venue, like, say, Detroit, Hartford or Providence. It is not fair to skaters who do not train at altitude. Good for Max and Jason though :slink:

I need to say, I guess I'm a hard-nose with not enough sympathy for the skaters. Yes, altitude is different. (although that too ... supposedly I have asthma, been prescribed the meds and all that. Yet in the times when I've been at elevated areas in Colorado, like Breckenridge or Estes Park, nada, nothing, zilch, hiking and running at my usual speed. Of course, that speed is less than zero at sea level:laugh:)

I want to see skaters at their best, but shouldn't they be able to compensate for altitude, like runners and other Olympic athletes?:scratch2:

They can and they will if an Olympics is held at altitude. But it takes weeks and access to a facility at altitude prior to the event. Most athletes & their coaches cannot set aside that amount of time or easily gain access to training facilities at altitude in order to prepare for an early season event at Colorado Springs. Altitude also affects people very differently. Some people are not affected at all. Others--some the best athletes in the World--can hardly breathe at all after a free skate.

I just checked diamox, which can be used to help acclimatize to altitude, and it is banned by WADA as a diuretic / masking agent. My daughter lives at 6500 feet (halfway between Colorado Springs and Monument in elevation, though on the other side of the state) and visiting can be brutal.

I just looked up altitude sickness, because I've heard something about only going up 1000 ft in altitude per day to avoid altitude sickness. The good news is that altitude illness usually occurs only above 8000 ft in elevation. That doesn't mean that you won't feel short of breath below that, because you definitely will, but you're unlikely to get acute mountain sickness or something worse (life-threatening). The 1000 ft/day elevation gain applies over 10,000 feet if you want to avoid AMS.

Here's a link to a good piece on acclimatization:
http://ismm.org/index.php/normal-acclimatization.html?expandable=1&subexpandable=2

Pull down Infos/Public on the left to go to other topics like acute mountain sickness and cerebral/pulmonary edema.

Since skaters train all over the place for different reasons, I would imagine that if CS is announced for a competition well in advance that coaches would ensure their skaters get an opportunity to train at a higher elevation to prepare.

The majority of the ISU officials and judges/technical specialists are from Europe. That would be my guess.

If that's the case, it's a sad state of affairs. There are plenty of officials in Asia and the Pacific region.

And football players, basketball players and baseball players. I think how an athlete responds to moderately high altitude like in CS or Denver is a very individual thing. It really didn't seem to affect any of the skaters I saw back in 2012 (Mao, Ashley, Chan,Takahashi, Kanako Murakami, to name a few), though I heard Alex Shibutani was affected and that he and Maia had to pull out of the gala.

The altitude most definitely affects athlete's of all kinds. I had a friend who was a track Athlete and he said that competing at the U of C was the worst event he ever had. He felt he couldn't get enough air into his lungs because it hurt to breathe.

Yes, but not all athletes.

I've been a fan of events at altitude ever since Tim Dolensky threw up in the kiss and cry at the US Classic in 2012. Legend.
