Wow, some unexpected transparency from the ISU today.

It published a list of countries that applied for 2019 ISU Championships.
(The deadline for applications was Apr 15, 2016.)

ISU European Figure Skating Championships
~ Austria Graz January 21-27, 2019
~ Belarus Minsk January 21-27, 2019
~ Croatia Zagreb January 21-27, 2019
~ Estonia Tallinn January 21-27, 2019
~ Ukraine Kyiv January 21-27, 2019

~ USA Colorado Springs February 4-10, 2019

ISU World Junior Figure Skating Championships
~ Croatia Zagreb March 4-10, 2019

ISU World Figure Skating Championships
~ Croatia Zagreb March 25-31, 2019
~ Japan Saitama City March 18-24, 2019

ISU World Synchronized Skating Championships
~ Finland Helsinki April 12-14, 2019

ISU World Junior Synchronized Skating Championships
~ Switzerland Neuchâtel March 15-16, 2019

http://static.isu.org/media/318967/isu-summary-of-championships-applications_2017-18_2018-19.pdf (20 Apr 2016)

http://www.isu.org/en/news-and-events/news/2016/04/summary-of-championships-applications

Finally, some hard data (one season's worth, at least) for the GS discussions of which countries would be interested in taking on the responsibility of hosting an ISU Championship.

ETA (on May 4), update:

Happened to notice today that the ISU site has a revised version of the PDF -- and the typos noted above have disappeared.

The revised information:

ISU World Junior Figure Skating Championships
~ Croatia Zagreb March 4-10, 2019
~ Estonia Tallinn March 4-10, 2019

ISU World Synchronized Skating Championships
~ Finland Helsinki April 12-14, 2019

On a related topic:

Today the ISU announced also the 2016 Challenger comps.

Skate Canada Autumn Classic and Lombardia Trophy both are back on the list, after being excluded last year.

The U.S. Classic is included for a third straight year, so North America has two Challenger comps this year.

But for better or worse, the U.S. Classic no longer is first on the calendar.
Lombardia Trophy occupies the lead-off position.

4. ISU Figure Skating Challenger Series

Further to ISU Communication No. 1994 and the corresponding applications received, the Council has selected the following 10 International Figure Skating Competitions for the ISU Figure Skating Challenger Series for the season 2016/17:

Lombardia Trophy Sesto San Giovanni, Italy September 7-11, 2016
2016 U.S. International Salt Lake City September 14-18, 2016 Figure Skating Classic
Nebelhorn Trophy Oberstdorf, Germany September 22-24, 2016
Autumn Classic International Montreal, Canada September 28-October 1, 2016
Ondrej Nepela Memorial Bratislava, Slovakia September 28- October 2, 2016
Finlandia Trophy Espoo, Finland October 6-9, 2016
Ukrainian Open Kiev, Ukraine November 9-13, 2016
Warsaw Cup Warsaw, Poland November 17-20, 2016
Tallinn Trophy 2016 Tallinn, Estonia November 22-27, 2016
Golden Spin of Zagreb Zagreb, Croatia December 7-10, 2016

All dates are subject to confirmation/change.

Colorado Springs is the only city applying for 2019 4CC, so that's the final decision right? Finally, no more 4CC in Taiwan and South Korea.

The elevation of the Springs is very difficult for asthmatics and people with stamina issues or even a common cold. I found the last 4ccs held there very painful to watch, as one skater after another turned green and gasped frighteningly.

I wish USFSA would try to develop another venue, like, say, Detroit, Hartford or Providence. It is not fair to skaters who do not train at altitude. Good for Max and Jason though :slink:

Likely it is..... though I dread competitions in Colorado Springs, many athletes just look so exhausted due to altitude:drama:

I will never forget the ladies FS from JGP Colorado Springs...it was so bad that all three medalists fell, two of them multiple times :slink:

This is completely true!! I remember seriously wondering if some of them were going to pass out. I realize that "Red Rocks" a concert venue, is at a lower elevation but I definitely remember gasping for air when our group performed there and all I did was sing and dance. I can't imagine how exhausting the LP's must be for the skaters.

Have a look at Skate America 2001 some time. Dick Button talks about it during several skater's performances including Gold Medalist Tim Goebel. He and several of the other skaters were literally gasping for air during their bows. Also, if you watch the pairs, you could see the fright in their faces on their throws during the long programs. It wasn't a great event for anyone.

Thank you, golden, for posting this! And thank you ISU for doing something right for once.:)

So, I note that five countries are vying to host Euros' - while only one is applying for 4CC.

Only two countries are interested in hosting junior Worlds' - both European.

Only two countries for Worlds' - one European, and one Asian, and that is Japan.

So it will be very unsurprising when junior Worlds' will be held in Europe, and Worlds' either in Europe or Japan.:)

If Colorado Springs gets 4CC, I won't be surprised if a lot of skaters decide to skip the competition altogether. :confused2:

Me neither although I think less Americans will withdraw than usual, I still remember the JGP event very clearly, the girls were always gasping for air

As for the location for Worlds I'm not sure they'll want to hold a 3rd European Worlds after Helsinki and Turin, I'm going to assume it'll go to Japan again, after all it's probably more profitable.

This +1 (except Turin isn't official yet, it's Turin or Milan, far as I know). There is no way they are gonna hold 3 Worlds in Europe in a row. Japan it is.

And it better be Japan, because I'm already contemplating going to Italy for the 2018 Worlds because it's relatively close to home, and I really, really cannot start thinking about going *three* years in a row. I mean, my wallet can't.

And when do we start taking bets about Yuzuru Hanyu sticking around after Olympics 2018 for another year so he can skate in Japan at Worlds in 2019?

8 Challenger events in Europe, 2 in North America, 0 in Asia......
The absolute closest any skater from an Asian country or Australia can get to a Challenger event is USA. that's only one event and a fair distance to travel. It's not a local train fare in cost either.

It's like the World Development Trophy being held recently in Poland. Everything is in Europe it seems? Why? There is not even the pretence of sharing a world sport around the world. The few events I've watched in Europe (online) the stands are almost empty.

How does such a continuing imbalance occur?

The majority of the ISU officials and judges/technical specialists are from Europe. That would be my guess.

Milan was confirmed today as the host of 2018 Worlds:

ISU World Figure Skating Championships to be held in Milan, Italy on March 19-25, 2018.

The confirmation is in the same ISU doc that gives the list of 2016 Challenger Series comps.

Why are there no Challenger events in Asia? Again.

We cannot rule out the possibility that no Asian countries wanted to host Challenger comps.

Surely all the Montreal based pairs and dancers will go!

Awesomeness!!!!!

Oooooh, I had not thought of that awesomeness :agree:.

So if Tessa :luv17: and Scott :luv17: want a Challenger comp ...
