I just got an automatic email from a third party applicant managment site saying the position for which I had applied was closed. Should I take this to mean they filled the job, or that they are no longer accepting applicants?

Does not mean that the position is filled, just that the competition is now closed. These things are always time sensitive.

When I first read the email, my immediate reaction is that they had filled the job. But I would be shocked that I didnt get at least a phone interview because I had been referred by an employee for the position. Puzzling that is for sure.

Sigh.

Those HR people always do whatever they want. One of my best friends is in HR for a major Canadian bank and they'd still post vacancies even when they already know who's gonna get the job internally.

Can't hurt to call the prospective employer (not the third party, who is probably a computer anyway) and ask. Express ineterest in the job. Make sure you're on the short list for the next one that comes along.
