Ilia Malinin

I hope Ilia realizes that this one skate doesn't define him. He's still the brilliant skater he's always been. I hope he'll take this time to enjoy the Olympic Village or whatever sights and sounds are around and interesting to him. Someone said Isabeau is really enjoying this experience ... you're friends, ask her to recommend something.

I realized I just switched "person" to talk to Ilia directly. That's okay. Maybe he'll absorb it through the universe. :)

The Ilia society is collecting messages of support for Ilia.

I already wrote my message:

"Ilia, you're a phenomenal skater. You've accomplished so much in your career in a short amount of time. 4 National titles, 3 GPF titles, 2 World titles, and Olympic gold in the team event. We all love your skating and support you no matter what happens. I know you'll be able to bounce back. But most importantly, we care about you being happy. And I hope you're happy seeing so many people supporting you and giving you encouragement."

Ilia doing a 4T with Vladimir Vitsintev today at a practice session. It makes me really happy to see him practicing with friends. He’s so resilient to be back to practice after just one day off.

It has been reported that Ilia will be going to the World Championships, and that he will skate at the Olympic gala

I'm heartbroken for Ilia. I had my fears but this was worse . . . I have to admit that the story of Nathan Chen's 2018 Olympics has haunted me ever since I heard it. That night I couldn't sleep and couldn't stop thinking about what Ilia was going through. I resorted to reminding myself about the day in January 2025 when I thought that we had lost Ilia on that plane crash. Putting a bad competition into perspective hasn't magically made everything better, but it did make me remember that all that really matters to me is for Ilia to be happy, like @Ilia4A said. Medals, competitions, whatever.

I barely have the will to watch the rest of the Olympics but when I heard that Ilia was watching the Pairs SP today I figured I could too . . . I'm extremely grateful for all the little bits of news we got today, about Ilia going to practice, sitting with Piper Gilles and Donovan Carillo, invitation to the gala, and any other sign that Ilia is getting through this with help from friends. And when he gets home, his cats will love him just the same!

Today Ilia shared another teaser video for his (presumed) Olympic gala program about mental health. I continue to be amazed and impressed by Ilia’s bravery and strength of character, and I think it’s great he is bringing such an important topic to the Olympics. I hope that he will inspire other young skaters, athletes, and non athletes to get help and take care of their mental health.

I also am absolutely sick and tired and furious about online bullying and hate. I wish I could snap my fingers and make every hater lose the ability to speak and type. I wish I could protect all skaters and athletes from seeing these hateful words. So many skaters, including Ilia and his friends, (Kevin, Amber, etc) have been targeted by vile online hate and messages. These haters should be ashamed of themselves. They are not “fans of the sport” and have no place in the sport. Even on this forum I see so much hate and nasty comments. In fact I don’t even look at most of golden skate because I’m tired of all the negativity. I can’t imagine how hurtful this must be for the athletes. Everyone on golden skate and the internet who spreads such nastiness towards Ilia and other skaters should be ashamed of themselves and do better.

It's one thing to have constructive criticism of someone. Or criticizing something they have done that was bad. But unnecessary hate is completely wrong. I've seen so much on Twitter it's mind-boggling. And some on here as well that makes me groan. It's okay if you prefer other skaters over Ilia. I have ZERO problem of that. You like who you like. The problem comes from....a lot of things that I won't list.

First of all, I was gutted after he skated. And the first thought that came to mind was if he was MY son I would have sequestered him a bit more and kept the rabid press away from him. As calm as he usually is, no one could withstand that onslaught without it having some effect on him. Next of all, I don't remember the last time I saw such a display of good sportsmanship as when he walked over to Mikhail after his disastrous skate and congratulating the gold medal winner. That took a lot of guts, courage, strength and fortitude to put his own horrific skate behind him and reach out to the winner. 👍 Quite a young man.

He’s still “liking” Mikhail’s gold medal celebration posts! I mean I question the notion of being on social media at a time like this (that said he’s a youngun so it would be like telling him not to breathe) but he’s still liking posts of Mikhail snuggling up to his gold medal. Ilia is (and imo has always been) an excellent sport. Genuinely so as well, not just out of politeness. It baffles me that people would try to spin things otherwise.

He is smiling again and he doesn't go home with empty hands. He did win Gold!

That is so adorable.

I’m disappointed to see that a bunch of Ilia fan pages on Instagram are being taken down by Instagram - presumably because of copyright and the Olympics. Even the Ilia Society and “Quint Queen” currently have no posts. I know it’s a small thing, but I so appreciated the happy ilia updates and practice videos the last couple days. It really cheered me up seeing Ilia looking happy
