Jason Brown

I want all TCC skaters at Philadelphia International.

Four banana meltdown

:dbana::dbana::dbana::dbana:

Two years ago, there were several south Korean skaters at the Philly comp. they had quite the cheering contingent Hmmmm :cool14:

You forgot Cha Jun Hwan.
Conrad Orzel should be senior? Joseph Phan night still participate in junior tournaments.

Then we need to wait & see where Gabby Daleman goes. Follow Lee Barkell to his new employment or stay at TCC or totally change coaches, location.

I did forget Jun. Conrad works with Lee for the most part. So he might follow Lee to Granite as well. Or Brian might pick him up. I don't know if he's on the list of qualifiers. Joseph might be qualified for one GP. Not sure if he is on the list either. No way of knowing what Gabby will do. So far no one at TCC is talking about any of the rumors as far as I know. It's still rumor, though it may be true. I'm curious to see where the Chinese seminars lead. Jason is scheduled to return to China with Tracy and Brian in June. I keep thinking that they might be trying to smooth the way for Boyang to finally come to TCC.

I guess we'll know for sure who is going to what GPs when they announce it in June. But speculation is fun!

Eventually someone will confirm or deny everything.

I’m guessing Jason would be thrilled to get SA again, and he’s typically done well there, in contrast to NHK, where I’m sure he’d also love to go. If he gets SA I will consider going, as it's not close but not that far from me.

If Cup China is being held in the future Olympic venue (anyone know?) I bet he’d love to be invited there, too.

FYI - Evgenia has alluded to NHK (in a Pantene contest for fans), so quite possible.

Aside from that, I suspect they will both do SCI.

Zhenya might well go to NHK. I think that's a strong possibility for Jason as well whether he does SA or SCI. Since none of the Japanese Ladies medaled at World's, she could be the medalist. She is more likely than Alina or Elisabet, I think.

Evgenia and Rika can be at the same competition. Only Alina, Elizabet T. and Evgenia (1st, 2nd and 3rd at Worlds) can't be at the same competition (and Rika, Kaori and Satoko, 4th, 5th and 6th at Worlds).

I forgot who the 3rd medalist was. Rika didn't medal. Evgenia is very likely to get NHK.

If we're thinking that neither Nathan nor Vincent will be at SkAm then Jason most definitely will be. SkAm needs a men's star and as much as I like someone like Tomoki, he's not at that level yet. But Jason...people will buy tickets to see Jason.

Nathan will definitely be at SA. It's during his October break at school. And he's World Champion. Jason might be. Nathan does have a break for Thanksgiving, but that comp this year is NHK. I can't picture NHK passing over Yuzu for Nathan, so that means that Nathan will have to take a short break from classes to do his second GP. They could give him China, though China might prefer Vince to Nathan. China is also a real possibility for Jason. I can see China for Jun as well. Jason could do SA or SCI easily.Jason could end up anywhere. But my guess is that he'll do his GPs with Jun. Conrad, if he stays with TCC, will be a factor as well. They would probably want him at SCI, but he could go anywhere else after that. US figure skating has to find spots for Tomoki and possibly Camden, if he qualifies. SA could be the choice for those two. Nathan will pack the seats, so they can feature two lesser known men. Which would then make SCI more likely for Jason. The speculation is endless.

Cup of China is in Chongqing this year, so not the Olympic venue for 2022.

If Jason goes to Phila International

:dbana::dbana::dbana:

But I don’t have high hopes. TCC does not seem big on summer comps, from what I can tell, and Skate Detroit would be waaaay closer. But who knows:biggrin:

Like you, I do not have high hopes re Jason and Philadelphia Summer International. :agree:
And I do not want to fuel wishful thinking among other fans (although I understand the desire to see Jason and his new programs ).

That said, will note that if(??????) he were making a choice btwn PSIC and Skate Detroit, then World Standings points would be an advantage of PSIC. (But whether it would matter to Team Jason, I have no idea.)

It will definitely be interesting to see where Jason ends up on the GP. I imagine that a lot of factors play into it. It’s not just a question of what’s most convenient for TCC, although I’m sure they as well as other coaching teams will lobby on behalf of their skaters. If TCC and USFS feel like Jason is strong enough to make a real run for the GPF, I expect they’ll try to place him where he has a good shot at silver, at least. USFS will also want to sell tickets to SA - I would guess that’s at least one reason why Jimmy Ma was given a shot last year - and Jason would be brilliant at that.

I think there’s a strong chance Tomoki will get Skate America, but Camden I’m not so sure about. Yes USFS wants to give him a leg up, but he didn’t do well in the second half of the season and he’s with new coaches. So I think that he’s likely to get a couple of senior Bs in addition to his guaranteed (I think?) GP; I would doubt the focus will be on getting him a second GP. Of course, I could be totally wrong. :)

ETA thx icecoverage for info on China.

There's also Alex Krasnozhon who has one guaranteed GP and would need help for a 2nd. He did a bit worse than Camden at JW, but much better at Nationals. Lots of balls for the USFS.

Yes. Also Andrew Torgashev.

I actually think Camden has a decent shot at 2 GP spots even without USFS - without Javi, he’s #23.

How funny we’re at least temporarily turning Jason’s thread into the de facto US men’s thread! It’s actually nice to chat about different US guys - I used to love the US men’s thread but somehow it’s not the same anymore. Looking at the World Standings list and the final standings at the 2019 Nats, it’s kind of sad to reflect on how many US men have either officially retired or just don’t seem to be actively competing. I’m glad Jason’s still competing!

It's interesting to speculate. There are so many scenarios. I'm sure that everyone is playing with charts right now trying to figure out the best places to put their skaters. I'd be quite happy to see Jason skate one GP with Nathan. And maybe one with Yuzu. And he likes competing with Shoma. I am really looking forward to the GP season and hope that Jason has a really good one! Who are the potential medalists this year? Nathan, Yuzu, Vince, Misha, Shoma, Jason, Boyang, Keegan, Sasha, Matteo, Jun and a few others. How those skaters are configured against each other will determine a lot. And there are always surprises. I think it will be interesting. They will have to skate their best to medal barring a splat fest, which can happen, of course.

The other "fun" and unique aspect of GPs is that the skating federations have no control over where their skaters are assigned (other than the host spots). The top 3 finishers at Worlds have some say in which events they want to compete but otherwise the federation hosting the competition chooses the skaters. Of course, back room deals probably happen all the time.

I can see Jason getting one of the Skate America host spots because (as we all know) he's popular and will get people into the seats.

My guess is that there’s some negotiation between federations (ie, I’ll select so and so for SA if you select so and so for Skate Canada/ NHK etc.). But that’s just a guess on my part.

With regard to Jason, it seems to me he still has difficulty seeing himself as a contender for the top spot rather than someone who will take silver or bronze behind Nathan, Yuzuru, or Shoma. With a different mindset, he might have done what Evgenia did at Worlds - kill it and outperform expectations. As one of three siblings myself, I know what it’s like to play nice with others, and Jason’s great at it. But you need something different to win competitions, and I hope he finds that within himself.

I am praying to god that he will get IdF again, although somehow it seems rather unlikely... I really want him to compete in Europe at least once this season!!! Lombardia is already out, since ACI is held in the same week. Will he decide to do a second challenger well into the GP period like he did with Golden Spin last season???

He used to have it. He had it when he skated Riverdance at Nationals. He was a fierce competitor. But the quad problems eroded his confidence. I see him getting it back. This is an issue that Brian has talked about and is certainly working on with him. His skate at IDF was fantastic. If he can perform at that level and up his tech content, he can definitely compete. He's got to have that mindset to get him to Beijing in 2022. And he has the coaching team to back him up if he can focus the way Zhenya focuses. They are learning from each other. She teaches him how to focus and he teaches her how to enjoy what she does. It's a good relationship for a competitive skater. He's got the talent. He needs the focus. But they are playing the long game and we'll see how far he gets this year.

It's as likely that he'll get France as any GP this year. It's a possibility.

Jason fans can channel their fav, and be open to talking about everyone in the men's GP with love and respect:) Although not as much as we love our boy;)

I'm liking the Jason at CoC narrative. I do think Jason will do SA, since Nathan and Vincent cannot be at the same event. I would naturally have thought Nathan at NHK, but quite right to point out that Yuzu is a lock, so no Nathan there. Maybe Nathan and/or Jason would want to do SA and SC, a la Hubbell/Donoghue, just get it over with .... just a thought?

And there are way too many skaters at TCC for Brian and Tracy to line them all up, Jason may just end up as a solo with Tracy somewhere.

I'm cool with that

And back to just Jason, can the water in Slovenia really be that green? It is gorgeous

For what it's worth the past initial SKAM picks (TBD)
2018: Nathan, Vincent (3rd) (Jimmy Ma)
2017: Nathan, Adam (1st in 2016) (Ross Miner)
2016: Adam, Jason (1st in 2015) (Tim Dolensky)
2015: Jason, Max (4th) (Ross Miner)
2014: Jeremy, Jason (2nd) ( Douglas Razzano)
2013: Max, Adam (5th; 2nd in 2012) (Jason -- who ended up being a last minute sub for Evan Lysacek, who WD)
2012: Jeremy, Armin (4th) (sub for Evan Lysacek), (Douglas Razzano)
2011: Richard (2nd), Armin (6th) , (Douglas Razzano)

National champ has pretty much gone to SKAM since forever. 2011 was the notable exception because Ryan Bradley retried, so Richard, the 2011 nationals silver medalist )was the defacto pick. The second pick is generally someone who was within the top 4 within the last two but it's not a hard core pick strategy.

So I'd said the SKAM No. 2 pick would be a tossup between Jason and Tomoki. Generally the TBD pick is someone that is within the bottom half of the top 10.

I have a slightly different take. Jason can be a great competitor when it counts, but although he gave a brilliant performance of Riverdance, I don’t think he was expecting to win or make the team; in fact, as I recall, he was quite shocked at his score and placement. The only time I’ve ever seen him look pissed that he didn’t win - and he hid it quite quickly- was at JWC in 2013, when he won the FS but lost to Josh overall.

I think for a long time he just lived in a beautiful bubble where he skated because he loved it; when he started succeeding at the senior level, the bubble burst, he was compared with others, and of course, the quad is part of it. But I don’t think it’s quite everything. When you win, someone else loses. As one of three close knit siblings - the middle child, no less - that may be hard for him to negotiate, and it may be one thing holding him back with the quad. Totally speculation on my part, and very possibly totally wrong.
