I can understand about the benefits to training in an elite facility. But her word choice of "serene" did give my a similar reaction to TMC. I mean since when is LA more serene than a the quite little (redneck meshugannah po dunk white trash) mountain town of Monument, Colorado - population about 5k? Seems a bit odd.

Though i suspect it may be less of what is going on with her facility and more do to the fact that Jason is likely the biggest celebrity that place regularly sees... he may be less of a big fish in a small town and more of a whale in a bathtub. He likely does get recognized less in LA... and in a small town like that... i suspect plenty of people in Monument know "some figure skater with a pony tail that got a medal at the last Olympics trains here" because it is a small town with nothing better to do or talk about. Serene is all relative, but i did find the word choice amusing.

I think it is good for Jason to be forced to make his own choices and not blindly follow Kori - and this distance is likely a good way to do it. It seems clear that he can land quads, and his issues are more mental than technique/physical - so getting him out of his comfort zone so he listens to himself more than his coach likely is a wise idea. He likely is to a point he needs to start making more choices himself as he lives in his body, Kori does not, so he has to be the one to make the calls as to what he can and can't do.

A month with Frank seems to have slayed a (CENSORED) ton of his 3A demons... let's kill those quad demons!

But here's a serious question: does every male skater naturally have no body hair? or are they shaving? for the photo shoot? or in general? what advantage would that confer in skating?

(Full disclosure: Esthetically, I am not a fan of shaving male body hair. Or even facial hair for that matter. Spousal unit has had a full beard since forever. Every once in a while he says maybe I'll shave it. Every once in a while I say that would kill my romantic moods. The beard has stayed)

Well for of all people Stèphane Lambiel do have some chest hair and exhibit it occasionally. I was initially shocked as I never had imagined that, but eventually got used to it...
Well... to shave or not to shave, that's the question. Fully exposed arm pit hair for example, is not a pretty sight to behold. On the other hand, it is highly awkward and even slightly comical when clean shaven. It's a no win situation I would say guys should keep a sleeved top on on the ice... well, that's my strictly personal opinion though...

Having said that, watching this video I keep reviewing and stopping at Jason's bit to stare so many times, by now I lost count

Haha. Maybe just for the photo shoot, since they were shirtless. Unless male skaters really do wax routinely. I have no idea about that. Maybe someone can enlighten me.

My better half has a theory on this. He said when you wear stretchy fabric over body hair, the hair can sometimes work its way through to being visible. Worse, it can also start to pull on the hairs as they try to peek out. So many may just get in the habit out of comfort and/or because ti would be seen still.

My guess would actually be that, being elite athletes, they are very familiar with the particular adhesiveness of strapping tape and therefore pre-empt a more painful ending to taking it off.

There's merit in what StitchMonkey's other half says too. I know I hate wearing tights when I haven't shaved my legs in a while - it makes me itchy. So it could be itch preventing, too.

Thanks everyone, I had not thought of the stretch fabric plus hair equals pain, I just kept thinking, is this like swimming, what aerodynamic advantage could there possibly be?

And in the magazine, in the article on Skate America, this *wonderful* quote from Jason:

I'm sorry to use this particular thread to ask this question, but I know that I'll get a quicker response...does anyone happen to know which practice group Jason will be in for Skate America? I have had a wedding cancelled this week and want to reuse my airline ticket and come to Skate America, but it is less expensive for me to fly in early Thursday morning. I know that the 1st session begins at 10:00am which would be cutting it a little close for me to make it in time, but if he's in the second group, that would give me a much better chance. I need to make a decision as soon as possible today, so if any of you could help a girl out? I absolutely love the practices sessions! You get to see so much more and get a good feel for the programs. Thank you in advance.

I wish I could help you! I went last year and I vaguely recall that all 3 US men skated in the later group for the first day of practice (e.g., that it was not done by world ranking), but I could be wrong. Hope you are able to make it!

I'm going to pull the trigger on the flight and hope like heck I don't run into too much traffic driving from Midway to Hoffman Estates at that time of the morning. I know most of the traffic will be going in the other direction, thank goodness.

Are you familiar with Chicago traffic? It's awful, and you can't always count on the reverse commute being clear. Midway is really far from Hoffman Estates (about 50 miles) so the trip will not be quick - at least an hour, I'd guess. I know that some airlines like Southwest only fly into Midway, but if you have a choice, Ohare is much closer to the venue (less than 20 miles / half an hour). I hope this doesn't discourage you and wish you a safe flight!

Do you? A few people have said that in the Grand Prix winners / losers men thread, but much as I'd love it, I can't see it happening unless he lands clean quads in both programs and both Shoma and Boyang make several mistakes.

Honestly, I will be thrilled if he lands both quads cleanly even if he doesn't win.

I think winning SA is very doable. He was only 2.44 behind Shoma at Lombardia and has many ways he can overcome that deficit. He beat Shoma in the free at Lombardia, he beat Boyang in the free at TCC - on paper, both are catchable for Jason.

The question is unfortunately the quad... again. Will he land it cleanly... and will he do it in both programs. I actually think he will land at least one good one at SA. He clearly can do it, it is just getting his mental ducks in a row to quack "quad".

If he goes even remotely clean I do think 90+ short and 180ish long for a total of 270 is the bottom end of what we can expect based on the math and past scoring. That could easily be enough to win. But that is if he goes clean with a quad... so who knows.

The thing is, Boyang's FS at TCC was an anomaly - he fell on everything and scored under 160 if I recall. Shoma's FS score at Lombardia was also low because he left out a couple of combos - compare the protocols to TCC and Japan Open, where his BV, TES, PCS and total score were much higher. So I'm not sure Lombardia is a good measuring stick. At Japan Open, Shoma scored 198 in the FS; that may have been inflated, but I still think he will score higher at Skate America than he did at Lombardia (assuming he's clean). Which is my long winded way of saying that a 270 FS from Jason would be fantastic, but still may not be enough to beat a clean Shoma or Boyang.
