Jason Brown

Gracious in defeat, Jason's fine character and fortitude gives us all lot to think about.. I love him even more now than I did before, if that's possible. Looking forward to seeing him again on the ice so I am overjoyed he has another assignment this season and wish him god speed in his future path. BTW, he will never leave Kori... contrary to some views expressed on Golden Skate. It will be interesting to see where his path WILL lead next after Olympic Season.

Jason is in the gala! Considering everyone else are either junior champs or senior medalists (and just the top two in pairs -- but all the medalists in dance). That's huge. Also a very kind hearted soul gave me his front row seat for the gala cause he wasn't feeling well, so I'll be up and close!!

Wonderful news! For both of you! When is the gala???

Starts in a few minutes! A few folks were just wrapping up gala practice when I arrived. Got to see the tail end of the Shibs ex.

Basically junior champs, top two pairs, four dance, five men, three ladies (the Olympians).

Yay for Jason and Congratulations Mrs. P. :clap:Wave through the window at Jason for us, will you?

Small IG clip of Jason's exhibition

I am told by arena spies (not by this user) that Jason received his usual Standing O.

some people have it too difficult to comprehend that a rocky season and disappointing FS at Nationals are not defining point of Jason's entire competitive career/record, nor the end of the universe for him - hence no wonder from my side that he received an invite to the EX and a standing ovation. And thank God for Jason's gracious manner he's carrying himself regarding Nationals finish, whole Olympics spot enchilada and all the talk - elegance, cultured manner and positivity regarding selected skaters AND his own situation Jason represents are really nice and refreshing to see in the sea of salt around. I am selfish right now, but boy - I would love to see Jason at Milan Worlds (one of guys would have to empty the spot, but that's my dream:))

Hey guys! At the airport heading home. :)

So funny story -- the clip el henry posted is actually from a fellow GS user, who ended upgrading her seat from me after I upgraded (I gave her my ticket). The exhibition was really fun to watch and yes he got a standing ovation.

Same lovely soul also gave me a ticket to the Friends of Figure Skating breakfast. It was a ton of fun and Jason was there! We chatted for a few minutes, got a photo and I told him to slay 4CC.

Another story: I was chatting with Camden Pulkinen and Jacob Simon about their music video with TJ Nyman, another Team USA jr. pairs skater. I made some joke that I wanted a photo of them so I could say I knew them before they became famous hip-hop artists. Anyway I just gave my phone to someone and we took the photo. And then when I bothered to look -- I realized I had given my phone to Jason's dad! And I just said that "You're Jason's dad!" He laughed. After I chatted with Jason, I ended up talking to his dad again and for a while. He was super friendly -- it's very obvious where Jason get's his exuberance from.

I had told him that they should go to Din Tai Fung in Taipei, where they originally started (yes, I have a slight obsession with this place), which evoked an enthusiastic response and typed the name in his phone when he asked. Anyway, we ended up talking about parenting. Basically I had mentioned that my husband was watching my daughter, and that she was a very active toddler and jumping off coffee tables. I showed him a video that Mr. P had sent to me while I was here. Anyway, he talked about how active Jason was (lol, surprise to nobody.) and told me that this phase too would pass (which I know of course, but I can always use reminders CONSTANTLY given the current state of things). I then mentioned that he has raised a good kid and that he was lucky to have a supportive family, especially with the tough free skate, which prompted him to say something to the effect that they always support him, but that it's the toughest on him. And he said that you try to do all you can as a parent but in the end you have to step back you have to let them face/process the disappointment and that I will probably be learning the same thing as my daughter grows up. I totally didn't expect to have this conversation, but it was really nice. He was saying how genuine Jason was -- and I have to say it's easy to see where he gets it from.

Anyway, my flight is boarding soon!

devastated. :(

i'm a new fan to figure skating and of Jason but does anyone know if he's ever addressed the probability of a coaching change?

Yeah, me, too. I have no idea if it's been addressed in recent years, but his coach has said that while he was moving up the ranks, she suggested it, but he and his family were against it. If the current arrangement is not working well for whatever reason, I would hope that all parties would consider it. I would like for him to do what's best for him, even if it means breaking up a career-long team.

Question about how the first-alternate thing works. From googling, I can see that the Olympic alternates do go to the games and practice with the other team members, but do not stay at the Olympic Village and have to get their own tickets to watch their events. Is this how it works for figure skating? How about Worlds? Does it work the same way? Do the alternates go to Worlds? As someone mentioned above, with all of this, plus 4CC and SOI, I'm concerned that all of this traveling over the winter will have a negative impact. What's the chance that he could just stay in Asia between 4CC and Korea?

Thanks, Mrs. P, for the first-hand report. Sounds like fun!

I honestly don't know the situation with the alternates - I remember when Michelle Kwan withdrew after the Opening Ceremonies, they had to fly Emily Hughes in but I don't remember if that was from the US or if she was somewhere in Europe already.

But I did read somewhere that the USFSA was going to have Kayne & O'Shea stay and train in Asia after 4Cs, just in case, so if that is actually true, then it's probably true for the rest of the alternates.

I believe it's an exception rather than a rule to have the alternates there. Maybe they want Kayne & O'Shea there just in case because if Alexa and Chris should have to withdraw just before or during the team event (heaven forbid), there'd be nobody to cover for them otherwise. Even if one of the singles skaters/dancers had to withdraw before/during the team event, they'd already have a replacement right there and plenty of time to fly the alternate over before the real event.

The 1st alternate pair were flown to Helsinki last spring like one day before the SPs because it looked like A&C might have to withdraw. It was definitely considered an unusual occurrence.

Back to Jason: 340.000 views!

What a lovely story - thanks so much for sharing it!

I bet your daughter and husband were both thrilled at your return! :)

With everything going on with the men's selection I have not had time to come in and
post how disappointed I am that Jason will not be on the Olympic team. He did get
4CC's so we will be seeing him soon. Any videos of his exhibition up yet?

Great story, Mrs. P! And I remember Jason's mother talking about how Jason was the one all over the jungle gym at the park, and she was going, well, yes, that's my child.

Has Toddler P shown any interest in skating?

(and yes, I realized that the poster of the IG exhibition clip was here on GS, but it's not my place to identify her. Maybe she'll pop in and take the credit;) )

Not really. Not that I really gave her the opportunity. I enrolled her in gymnastics classes, but stopped because basically I was paying $50 a month to have her do nothing but run around and jump on the trampoline. Which might have been a regretful move because now EVERYTHING SINGLE THING (i.e. the coffee table) is now something to jump off. I'm thinking swimming next.

And yes, Tavi, I was really happy to see them and they were happy to see me. She said "Mama mama mama mama" for 5 minutes straight. And then threw a tantrum after I told her she couldn't jump on her chair during lunch.

Toddlers. Yes, you're right, Jason's dad, this too shall pass.

I am new to posting in this thread. But I can't help but feel bad for Jason. He too, as well as all the other skaters at nationals have been working hard to be on the Oly team.
I watched his sp & lp a few times and it just seems to me that something is wrong that is not being disclosed.
Maybe he is trying to work through an injury and didn't want to disclose it for fear of it affecting his chances of getting on the team?? I don't know, I am speculating. It just seems unusual for him to be in 6th place at nationals. Jason has been one of our top skaters.
I would have liked to see Jason on the team. I'll always root for the artistic skaters. He brought a lot to the sport. Hope we see him around after this season and beyond.

Hi, I hope you enjoyed being at Nationals! I know you are a big fan of Adam's so I'm happy for his fans that he is on the team.

I don't think he was injured -- I said earlier that basically he was hitting all his jumps really well during the warm-up at both the SP and FS (i.e. the 20-minute warm-up that occurs earlier in the day of those respective segments) and he looked great and well-trained in practice, per Jackie's tweets. I really think the pressure got to him and has been getting to him all season. Not only that I think the programs took a while to master. In hindsight, it might have been good to maybe do the Sam Smith SP again and do the Inner Love FS, but it was obvious how much he wanted to do Hamilton for the Olympics.

I think he was overly ambitious trying to master quads, while doing two challenging programs while managing all the press/excitement of the Olympic year -- four years ago, he had only one new program, he had smartly opted not to include the quad (or rather listened to Kori regarding whether to put it in) but focused on mastering the program and he was a dark horse who had no media attention. I also think that the previous two years--it was easier to focus because the focus was "not get injured" or "make sure I am physical shape to not injured" so he was probably more willing to cut back and it was easier to focus on just training the programs. But then once he wasn't injured anymore, he had the pressure of living up to what he could physically could do and that played with his psyche. And I think there is a bit of stubbornness/rebellion -- it was probably still mild compared to most, but I have a feeling that Jason wanted to do it all and Kori had a harder time convincing him to reign it in.

ETA: I knew this -- but 4CC is like in two weeks! That's such a quick turnaround, but it's kind of fun we'll get to see Jason compete in such a short time. But ugh those time zones are going to be terrible -- I don't think I'll be zombining it -- too sleep deprived being at Nationals.

I agree that the Olympic hype, which started at Champs Camp, likely got in his head and he tried to do too much in one season. It happens that way for a lot of talented skaters.

On the plus side, despite it feeling like there is no plus side, this year he landed a lot of quads in practices and warm-ups that looked ok. I hope he keeps one of his programs at least for next year.
