Johnny Weir Journal Update !

Here is what I think is going on. USFSA have a script. They want the sport to be more "masculine". They wanted Johnny to follow that script, but you saw how that worked out. Thankfully for them, Johnny lost nationals last year. Here comes Evan. Like a good boy, he follows the script, saying he'll represent US differently than Johnny and be masculine. He probably didn't even mean anything by it, just followed the script. Now Johnny, when he hears this, gets offended, because he sees this as a slight to himself (and he's justified in thinking that). He calls Evan fake and says, "bring it on, *****!" Now it's a pissing match with no end in site.

Here is why Evan's masculinity talk is annoying. Look at Brian Joubert. He's masculine. He is not afraid to wear sparkles. He does not hold press conferences dedicated to the subject of his masculinity either. Evan is just trying too hard.

Can you hand me a copy of that script should you ever get a hold of it? With the writer's strike and all, I'm kinda hard up for entertainment :agree: ;)

With all the talk that Figure Skating is not really a true sport, I believe Blades of Glory confirmed that. I know, I know, it was a spoof and I should lighten up but it was at the expense of conspiracy theory which I didn't find funny.

Actually, IMO there are two points where Evan's macho-man proclamations make sense.

First, about costumes. The ISU rule states that a costume must be "appropriate to an athletic contest." Ninety-nine percent of figure skating costumes are not.

Second, it would be cool if we could hook into the Xtreme sports movement. I'm not sure how, but we could start by calling a triple jump a "1080."

It definitely supports the already well maintained stigma that skating is not a real sport... especially for men... and even says "yeah pairs skating doesn't even make you look like a guy"

but I've not seen the movie... John Heder and Will Ferrel are not that funny for me...

To me those "Xtreme" sports couldn't HANDLE extreme... try 1049 miles of Alaska wilderness steering through unbroken terrain on a wooden or plexiglass sled controlling up to 16 dogs with the power together to pull a 10 thousand plus full sized pick up truck... going over tussuks and ice and THEN you can call it extreme...

 to me those skate boarders and bikers are no more extreme than a figure skater on the senior international circuit.

Nothing wrong with being masculine. The thing annoying people is that Evan wants to make sure that everyone knows he is masculine.
So what? Johnny wants everyone to know that he's different (he says so in every interview). I just really don't see the difference.

While I think what Evan really wants to happen is to break the stereotype associated with skating, "Look at me! I am man! Don't make assumptions about me just because I am a skater!" It might not be the message that is ultimately coming out.

I think that's exactly the message that is coming out. And still I see nothing wrong with it.

:laugh:Have you seen the poll in this forum? http://forum.hdldemo.com/forum/showthread.php?t=17499
That explained it.

I didn't compare Evan with Johnny on this subject. It's a separate topic.

Yes, to me, Johnny is annoying in many ways off ice. There is no need to list them here. I appreciate him as a rare and talented skater who can skate the way that few skaters can do. The only thing that I am really concerned and annoying me about Johnny is his fear of putting the quad into his programs. I don't care any other things about him off ice. I have learned to ignore his off ice image long ago, and I have to say that, on ice, he is moving into the direction I don't like, such as his LP costume of this year. So I have realized that I am not a real Johnny fan. I don't love him unconditionally. There are millions of Johnny fans who don't think like me. I am only represent myself, and speak for myself.

When Evan talks about incorporating masculinity into skating it sounds a lot to me like double speak for skating needs to be less gay. Obviously people are going to be offended by that. Either that's what he really thinks or he's not smart enough to word his opinions in a less divisive manner. JMHO

When Evan talks about incorporating masculinity into skating

That's why it's so irritating. His message is not "I am masculine, take me the way I am", but "Skating should be masculine". In my opinion, skating should be diverse, and I can't understand the desire to make it to one standard.

Johnny, on the other hand, never said that ALL skaters should wear glitter costumes, for example, it's his own preference and nothing more.

I had many posters differ from me when I said that Johnny did not skate feminine like because I could not think of any female skater who could skate like him. The reason was one could be feminine and not be like a female. I have no idea about his private life in that area. Nor do I have any knowledge of Evan's proclivities to manhood. From what I am reading it seems as if one skates in a perceived feminine way , he is considered gay and one who skates in a perceived masculine way, he is not gay. Is that correct?

From living in NYC, I would say there are feminine men who are gay, but then so there are super macho men who are gay. And then there are men who are neither feminine nor masculine.

Does it help to speak of the differences in the SP and LP?

the truth rarely follows stereotypes...

but stereotypes still reign in how people are percieved...

why don't we ever see anyone skate in a 'metrosexual' manner ;)

I hope not to offend anybody, but I am thinking that apart from the stereotypes (feminine = gay, masculine = not gay), I believe that these topics are only possible in the US, I am not sure if because they are promoted by the press or by the US federation but I do not imagine such a dumb controversy in Europe or Japan, Canada ....
If you like Weir, good. If you like Lysacek, also it is well. If you like out of the ice one more than other, the fantastic one, and if they are not friends, also it is well. There is no problem.:rock:

I would substitute the words society in general for skating just to extend your thought. I'm a dreamer. ;)

Seems to me like Evan tries a little bit too hard to let us know just HOW straight he is… Hmmm, I’ve known ppl like that in my lifetime.. and 5 years down the road they bust down that closet door. That stupid red scarf he wore didn’t help either.
