Johnny Weir Journal Update !

OldSkaterMom, are you related to Evan, by any chance? You wax so poetically about his virtues...

Now that is really funny!!! First of all I wax poetically because I am a former teacher with a lot of education and can write very well. (Thank you very much.)

Regarding Evan's virtures, I am a dedicated fan who follows his career very closely. I have just about every press interview, either in print or on tape, that he has ever done since his junior years. A friend of mine has made CD movies of Evan's career starting with his junior year in 2000 up until the present. I just happen to know a lot about him. Evan has emailed me a number of times. I met him at Skate America, and I know and have talked with others who know and have met him. He is a genuinely nice and authentic person.

I also agree with the above comment about the media hype surrounding last season's Nationals. The whole Evan/Tanith thing, while true, was pushed to the hilt by ESPN/ABC. Terry Gannon could not stop talking about it. I began to think he wished Tanith was his girlfriend. Evan had said he and Tanith had tried to keep it quiet, but it got leaked out because Tanith was ESPN's hottest female athlete of the year.

What completely baffles me is the outright animosity I pick up around here regarding Evan. Last week I had said on another thread that I wouldn't be back. But then it got rather interesting. But now I am getting tired of it. It is beginning to take up too much of my time and give me too many muscles spasms in my neck and shoulders which isn't good for my fibromyalgia. Nothing I say about Evan seems to make the "Evan haters" change their minds anyway. I am glad to see that there are some who do like him. I was beginning to think that no won in the world did except me.

So perhaps that is what prompted me to sound like I was related to Evan. However, I wouldn;t mind having Evan as my son. He reminds me a lot of my own son, who is very special in his own way with a lot of integrity, genuiness, and honesty.

OldSkaterMom: Someone on another message board explained it very well. Evan in one interview mentioned that his style of skating was a more masculine style, he liked to show the more athletic side of the sport and that... oh (unprompted), I'm wearing Christian Dior. ;)

Johnny likes Dior. I doubt he considers Dior "made famous by using a more voluptuous silhouette after World War II" too masculine for him at all. Quite the contrary. Get the humor now?

First of all, I recall Evan's comments about Christian Dior were made to Peggy Fleming during the broadcast of the Marshall's showcase when she asked him about his costumes and choreography. She was giving him the "style" award for the year. I don't recall Evan making the type of statement quoted above.

Secondly, I am joke impaired. I don't get the humor in Johnny's quote.

Some people prefer Johnny, others prefer Evan. That is what makes sport interesting. It would be pretty boring if every skater was exactly the same.

How do you know there arent many people who like both, and many others who dont like either. I am one who does not like either of them, contrary to your stated belief I was somehow a Johnny fan. What makes you think everyone just takes sides between them.

Quite frankly I think the interest in their rivalry and this whole grudge match of one vs the other, and ones avid fans vs the other, does not extend beyond the U.S much if any. They were 5th and 8th in the Worlds last year, 4th and 5th in the Olympics. They are good skaters but they arent the top dogs, the whole focal point over their rivalry is mostly just an American thing to be honest. They arent like Kwan-Lipinski in the late 90s, or even Kwan-Cohen in the mid 2000s.

Ding, ding, ding, we have a winner.

PS: My comment about you going on and on about Evan's virtues was sarcasm. Since you seem humor impaired I feel the need to mention that. ;)

Well, I am sarcasm impaired too. I am one of those unfortunate people who say what they mean and mean what they say and stupidly expect others to do the same. That makes me a target for anyone who wants to take pot shots at me. So bring it on. Everyone can have a great time.

Relax, no one is taking any potshots at you. I'm just kidding around because this thread has gotten deeply off-topic and your lengthy posts just stood out. :biggrin:I mean no harm.

Carry on, folks.

Well, I don't think kidding around is kidding around when it insults someone. I am outta here. Wasting too much of my time that I don't have to waste.

There is a difference between "Evan haters" and those who don't love him. Some of us find him "meh" as a skater -- I, for one, don't like his movement quality, however many jumps he lands -- but admire him as a competitor, which I do, given how many times he's performed sick.

Actually, "real men" (by whom we mean Budweiser-drinking, monster-truck-rally-watching men) have never heard of Christian Dior -- or at least they would never admit it.

that's right and they all live in Alaska...

I understand your point quite well. I define the "Evan hater" as a person who can't stand someone who is an Evan fan and NOT a Johnny fan. Johnny lovers are extremely defensive for some reason and think that the whole world should love Johnny. You risk having your head chopped off if you don't agree that he is the most wonderful thing on two skates. It even happens on Evan's own forum where some of the people are "cross overs."

I am an Evan fan and absolutely cannot be a Johnny fan at the same time. They have totally different styles of skating and totally different personalities. I happen to prefer Evan's. Plus, Johnny's mouth has really put me off in the past. I have to admit, however, that his last interview after CoR was the best one I have ever heard him give. He is a beautiful skater, but his programs all look alike to me. I prefer the character driven programs that Evan skates. It is all a matter of preference. But for just saying what I have said, I will probably get smeared.

Why do you keep tieing Evan fans and Johnny haters, or Johnny fans and Evan haters together. The two are not mutually inclusive or something. Like I said there are many who really like both, and others like myself who dislike both. It is pure fantasy that everyone is in one corner vs the other.

It seems to go both ways, and is not just a Johnny-Evan issue.

such is the nature of an internet board...

Here's hoping Johnny and Evan have a successful season that way it will be laid to rest who is better on paper... if both are clean in everything from here on out it'll come down to the little things... not that it will change fans opinions of their favorites... but then we won't have so many what ifs.

ITA about the what ifs. They are of no use at all. However, one of them is going to be the National Champion and one will not. Evan gets hate mail from Johnny's fans. I wonder if the reverse is true. I know I would never do it.

Maybe you would not, but Johnny has gotten plenty of hate mail, especially after the Olympics. Evan fans may have been the least of it at that point, but given who he is and what this country is like, I have no doubt he continues to get it from multiple sources. There's a reason he has a reputation about not caring what people think-he can't afford to.

No, I think some of them live the South, where they watch NASCAR races; others live in the MIdwest, where they go to tractor-pulls; and still others live in the Rocky Mountain/West, where they attend rodeos. I don't know what real men in New England go to for entertainment.

I am saying this as a huge Evan enthusiast who was born and raised in Texas but moved to California 31 years ago. And l have been described as "a sarcastic little brat."

:chorus:  :chorus:

BTW, remember, not so long ago, Evan accused "Weir's fans" of sending him hate mail?

Johnny got death threats after the Olympics...

Nope, Alaskan men are real men... ;) can't change my mind on that. Nascar ain't got nothin on Alaskan sports

IIRC there were media reports that he received threatening letters in the mail or by email.. turns out it was a cruel prank... but it was investigated...

Oh no, that's crazy.

Don't they hire people to review the letters before opening them by themselves? These letter can be quite harmful on their mental health.
