I noticed that the CW about judging at this years WC seems to be that pairs and ladies had the worst judging and that the level for dance and men was higher.

I'm reminded of Turin where the ladies event was the best judged.

What seems to run in common is that judging gets better as the competition goes on.

This doesn't bode well for pairs which is always stuck in first position. Maybe putting pairs last a few times could improve the quality of judging and eventually of the skating? (And figuring out how to make it less dangerous wouldn't hurt either)

I'm thinking it might be just a coincidence that at some competitions, the later events are judged better. [And in many cases, good or bad judging, like good or bad skating, can be a matter of opinion]. After all, they don't have the exact same judges judging all 4 disciplines, so it wouldn't be a case of them being half asleep early on, and then picking up steam by the end of the week. If the Pairs judging is in fact consistently the worst, then the solution to my mind would be to RE-TRAIN THE PAIRS JUDGES.

Or maybe pairs is just harder to judge.

There are fewer judges out there who have actually done any pair skating themselves, whereas singles and dance judges are more likely to have experience in those disciplines.

Also, judges need to watch two skaters at once, so it's a lot easier to miss some detail about one skater does while focusing on the other.

I think that's an awfully good observation, gkelly. Thanks!
