Farr/Kern (Missing You)

2twist nice
Star lift to one hand, interesting dismount
Throw 2Lo solid, lots of flow
SBS 2Lz way out of unison
SBS spins pretty good unison
Spirals, lines match very well (including matching Y-spirals)
Spiral into FI death spiral with hand change
Pairs spin a little out of control in the camel (not their dominant direction) but came together well when they switched
They seem to be a well matched pair. No major mistakes.
Quite a wait for scores.

Farr/Kern 43.41
Smith and Bartholomay 35.79

Star to immediate one hand hold
Throw 3Lo fell (but rotated)
SBS spins out of unison for some of them
Spirals ok
Pairs spin, some very nice positions for her

Simpson/Miller (techno Firebird)

Very confident
Split 2Twist almost horizontal
SBS 2Lz great unison considering the size difference
Throw 2Lo huge
Very fast across the ice
SBS spins unison a little weak, very close together
Star to immediate one hand, she grabs blade, one hand dismount
Spirals -- he's not very flexible but the speed and edge control were very good
Death spiral with hand change, her knees were very bent
Pairs spin a little slow
Very energetic program.

Thanks! Sorry it's a little vague -- pairs is definitely the discipline I know the least.

Carman/Knierim (Czardas)

Spirals, good edging and control, she needs to straighten her skating leg
Very energetic
Splt 2Twist fully horizontal
Throw 2Lo from dance lift
SBS 2Lz both fall (too close to boards)
SBS spins started way out of unison but got better
Star lift to one hand, to upside down
Travel to FI death spiral with hand change
Pairs spin, slow at first, very fast on second half

Carman/Knierim 48.31
Simpson/Miller 46.39
Farr/Kern 43.41
Aaron/Cohen 42.04
Gueli/Marron 40.05

14 and 20, I think. And yes this is typical Sappenfield.

The little girl braids make the age discrepancy even more glaring.

It's nice that he has decent flexibility in the spiral, but I think they were given a gift.

Same deal as the last couple. Except not only did they both fall (-2), she really had weight on her free leg in the throw double loop takeoff.

humm, i wonder why Sappenfield always does that age difference thing for her pairs.. i really don't think it's good for the pairs in a long run.. although you might see some good results early on.

It's a great way to look good almost immediately on lifts (they go up quick when you've got a beefy guy lifting you) and to be thrown high on twists or throws without the girl having to be perfect on picking in (or jumping up in the case of loop and axel throws). And there's an upside that a strong guy is less likely to drop you on your head.

There are downsides to both boy and girl since it's a real crap shoot about whether the girl will grow or not when they're 11 or 12. It's not just bad for the girl. The guy has invested all that time in a partner who gets too big. And then he's too old for juniors.

The downside to the girl is that these big beefy guys are often not that flexible for the spirals and it's harder for them to jump than for a skinnier guy.

Right.. but it's just not ideal in the long run. Later on, they won't be able to go to competitions even if they qualify for them because he's too old or she's too young. Then even later, when the girl's still at an extremely capable age but just too old to find a new partner, the guy's well over 30 already..

It's rather childish to focus too much on the immediate results.. just IMO

How did Carman & Knierim get into first with both falling on SBS jumps?

Their lifts were very hard, and very well done. They probably got a great GOE for the twist.

And at Sappenfield least isn't as bad on the age thing as Kerry Leitch who had pairs that were over 10 years apart at one point. He also had Tanovich and Chau doing lifts that were WAY too hard for them their first year of novice (2006) when she was 8 or 9. Apparently she was dropped on her head several times in the official practices.

He turned 21 in early November and she turned 14 a few weeks later. The 7+ year age differences are strange to me because the guy is going to age out of Jr probably way before the girl is ready to move up to Sr.

Leitsch seems to always have teams doing tricks that are too hard for them.

Chase and Speroff who are on the ice now are much better matched than usual for a Sappenfield pair.

The throw triple loop was very good. Too bad the pair spin kind of collapsed and probably lost a couple levels that way.

oh god.... i hope those little girls don't actually listen to the coach all the time.. it's just too dangerous, and not worth it.. if a pair is more than 10 years apart, it's obvious it won't last long
