Kazuki Tomono

Hi everyone,
I've been a dormant member but yay, Kazuki at 2 competitions in Europe in 2 weeks!!:jump:

I'd suspected JSF may have assigned him to Coup de Printemps with Kao's injury in mind, as he looks so out of place at CdP especially after his achievements this season (no offence to other 7 skates including Tatsuya Tsuboi, who was 9th in JNat 2021). While Kao explained his injury was new, I think JSF was right for once; it would be quite complicated to send athletes from Japan to Europe at present given Russian airspace closure and the COVID concerns & restrictions remaining in Japan.

I decided only last weekend to go to the Worlds with a faint hope that this might happen, but my friends in Japan had to give up their trip - I'm selling Gold & C2 tickets for Men's at half price in other threads, if you're interested:wink:

The schedule is quite convenient and worth considering if my fellow Kazuki fans wish to make it at the last minute; Men's FS is at 10:55 - 14:50 on Saturday 26th. Hopefully Kazuki will be in the last group (or the second to last at worst), so even a day trip would be possible subject to the transportation availability. From London where I live, easyJet flight arrives at Montpelier at 10am on Saturday @£36. The arena is just 5 minutes away from the airport by car according to Google. Marseille airport has more flights and is connected to Montpellier by Flixbus (about 2 hours at $4) - I'll have to take this route on my way back on Sunday 27th right after the Exhibition.

I didn't even know what NowVoice was, but saw Kazuki's Twitter and immediately downloaded the app while his recording was still available without registration. Rough translation from my vague recollection:

Self-introduction - Kazuki started figure skating nearly 20 years ago as there was an ice rink near his home. He was not an elite skater when he was a novice/ junior. But he didn’t give up and has been slowly making a progress. Now he competes at a global level.
He knew that Shoma, Keiji and some athletes belonging to Central Sports are on NowVoice. He actually had asked Keiji about it shortly before he received an invitation. He is really excited at the opportunity and tried writing a scenario in advance. But now he has started he finds it quite challenging. He's been standing in front of the microphone for an hour recording and deleting.
He ended by thanking listeners and inviting them for questions for the next recordings.

Apparently he had recorded in Japan and the comment section is flooded with messages cheering him for the Worlds, with some genuine questions for him about his hobby, diet, programmes for the next season etc.
Thanks for the translation 😊 maybe you can be the official translator for his NowVoice recordings on the forum here. I’m sure he has a lot to tell. I’d translate if I could but unfortunately I only know a little Japanese. I’m studying to speak it fluently but that’ll take a long time. It truly is a beautiful language.

Everybody guess what?! Kazuki is on NowVoice! This is so awesome! Shoma, Keiji and now Kazuki are on it. If only someone could translate what he said in English. It’s too bad that you have to have a subscription to NowVoice in order to hear it because it makes it harder.
I was so excited yesterday about Kazuki going to Worlds that I forgot to comment this news. That's so cool that he now has a NowVoice, I know Shoma and Keiji have it too and it's always an interesting source of info for fans. I hope we get regular translations of Kazuki's NowVoice, like we do with Shoma and Keiji

@Gaz1 thank you so much for your translation, and congrats on going to Worlds! I had the same feeling when he was assigned but CdP, but didn't want to believe it and ended up agreeing to work on that weekend  Hope you have a wonderful time, and good luck with selling the tickets!

In the meantime, Kazuki skates today at 6:35pm Central Europe time! He'll be the first to skate.
Here's the link for the livestream: https://youtu.be/HWeZSpv6SYU

Good luck, Kazuki! 🍀

Thanks for the translation, @Gaz1 ! I wonder if Kazuki accepts questions from foreigners as well, but maybe only as long as they're translated into Japanese?

I've just realized I'll probably still be shopping downtown today at 6:35 when Kazuki skates his SP. x_x I'll see if I can reshuffle my schedule somehow to see him in real time. 📿

Not Kazuki's best, he looked a bit insecure, but at least it's CdP and not WC. Good luck to Kazuki in the FS! You can do it, Kazuki :)
Hazarding a guess..with photo shoots and other opportunities..maybe being the second alternate ..wasn't training as hard and this CdP seemed to come out of nowhere..I suspect that seeing his friends at the Olympics..and then not being named 1st alternate..maybe motivation was off..He had mentioned that in his press conference at 4 Continents..Hope he wins on Sunday..and gets to Worlds and does what he is able to do! He will earn points here..which will help his ranking..

I had the impression Kazuki was struggling with the ice itself, AFAIK competing just after ice resurfacing isn't usual for him. Also, Hiraike-sensei wasn't there with him to calm his nerves. I really hope he will be there for Kazuki at worlds. Still...

WTF are these scores, are you kidding me 🤬

His combo was a bit shaky? Yes. But plenty of people land shaky jumps and still get good GOE. Why be so strict with Kazuki?
No points at all for a 2S? I don't understand.

Finally... THOSE PCS WERE A JOKE. Kazuki should have been showered in 9s just for turning up, let alone skating beautifully. He is literally the headliner of the competition. Why not be a bit generous?

Sorry guys, I'm just so upset, I'm so sick and tired of seeing Kazuki being treated like this.

Uh... sorry for commenting again, but this is actually in the rules... SP has required elements, and the required jumps are 1 axel jump (either 2A or 3A), 1 combo of either 4-3, 3-3 or 3-2 jumps, and 1 triple or quadruple jump. So the solo quad getting popped to a double jump means 1 required element was not completed, and therefore receive zero points (the same thing happened to Yuzuru at the 2022 Olympics SP).

But yes, I agree that Kazuki's scores is quite harsh for 1 invalid element. Yuzuru received 95 points for his 2022 Olympics SP and Shoma received 89 points for his 2021 Skate America SP, both of them popped their solo quad to a double there. Yes, there's a 4-2 combo instead of a 4-3... but still.

Please don't apologise! Your contribution is very welcome 🥰
Thank you so much for explaining the SP rules, makes a lot of sense now.

At this point in time there's literally no justification for Kazuki to get 7s in PCS. Even if he had flopped all his jumps.
Both from a objective POV - what he's putting out in terms of performance and presentation - and from a political POV: it's not like he's a nobody who's just turned up in the international circuit, he's the reigning Rostelecom bronze medallist and 4CC silver medalist, for God's sake.

It just feels like a huge disrespect to him and his skating.

Congratulations, Kazuki, for his first ever gold medal at the international events:clap:
Hope it gave him a big boost in his confidence and a chance for any necessary adjustments. And I really hope Coach Hiraike can make it to the Worlds:pray:

I’m with you, @KiraraChin. While I’m against reputation based scoring, they should have paid more respect to him, when most skaters in his place would have just withdrawn and headed for Montpellier! I guess they were unfamiliar to judge top skaters and uncomfortable to give 8s and 9s, with or without mistakes. In a way I’m relieved that he didn’t peak here.

Re NowVoice, I’m sure Kazuki will welcome questions in clearly written English. Sorry, I cannot commit myself to regular translations. I’m not much into social media and rather reluctant to subscribe services unless necessary, as I’m extremely poor at time management and already spending too much time in FS right now😅
Let me continue to post on an ad-hoc basis:wink:

I know, J5 also gave him 7.00 for Composition and Interpretation of the music, and 6.75 for Transitions!
I wish they could delete this stupid insulting CdP score from the record and just reflect his win on his standing - I’m trying to erase my memory…

Congrats to Kazuki on winning CdP! It's definitely not his best score this season, he was both held down on PCS IMO, and made some costly mistakes (I have yet to see the video as I was on a trip yesterday, I've just seen the scores), but he has the victory under his belt, he still went for the 3-quad layout, and now he's prepared for WC. Good luck at WC to Kazuki! 🍀

Kazuki's IG story from yesterday, it says something like 'Coupe du Printemps is over! Next, Worlds!'

I will try not to dwell on the score, because it's absolutely ridiculous. Kazuki got the job done and I'm so, so proud of him. He said when he arrived in Luxembourg, he was very jet lagged - direct flights from Japan to Europe have been suspended so he most likely had to do a long layover somewhere. Plus, he didn't have Hiraike-sensei with him, and he always struggles in competitions in which he's the clear favourite to win (that's why he always flops at regionals lol).

It could have gone horribly wrong but he managed to hold his own and get those 250 world standing points - this bumped him from 16th to 12th in World Standings. That's really good because it means he'll most likely skate in the second to last group in the SP at Worlds 🔥

I wonder what days this week are the short and free program for the men? Kazuki has so got this 100%
EDIT: The SP will be on Thursday, starting at 11:15am Central European Time, and the FS will be on Saturday, starting at 10:55am Central European Time. We should know the exact times Kazuki will skate closer to the day, hopefully he'll be in later groups for both

He is in the penultimate group at Worlds....Glad that he earned 250 pts for this competition.
