Doesn't every skater capable of finishing in the top 6 of any competition have a look of "Focus" on their faces. I don't remember ever seeing a skater jumping up and down in glee because they lost a skate. They watch, they absorb and then they try to do one better. Sometimes they do and sometimes they don't quite cut it. That is why it is called a competition.
Kimmie will have some stiff competition this season along with a lot of pressure at Worlds and she may not win the gold this time but she will do okay and I predict she will stay on top longer than Mao. Fingers crossed that I am right on that one.

yes. Such "stone faces" aren't limited to just Kwan, although I think she's had some of the coldest stares. But all the skaters do it. Just look at a TV pan shot of them waiting to take the ice to warm up. Even the "light-hearted" skaters (Emily Hughes comes to mind)- they ALL have the "game face" on.

You should see them LIVE at US Nationals for some 9 years as Kwan takes the No.1 Spot and skaters are on the two lower platforms. Cold stares? Sometimes a bit of tears on those lower platforms. And with some its that 'Wait til next year' look.

I think she is as a person is probably nice and fun-loving, but as a skater determined yet not feeling animosity toward the skater who beats her, just views them as a challenge she wants to overcome. And sometimes it shows.
What does everyone think about the 3a staying, seems totally necessary to keep it in with the horizon having the competition almost appearing to be waiting for her.

Irina may have given that impression in her first year in Seniors. But Sasha and Tonya 'puppies and kittens'? Never!

That's a good question about the triple Axel. For one thing, the decision might not be within her control. She might not be able to do it any more.seanibu said:

But Mao has other weaknesses, one of them being that she doesn't have a reliable triple-toe (of all things!) This limits her options for triple-triple combos (she will have to do a triple loop as her second jump).
Kimmie's personal best is 189.87 (worlds) for a program that featured 3F/3T and 3Lz/3T.
Mao's personal best is 189.62 (GP final) for a program that had a triple Axel but no triple/triple.
Kimmie's best strategy might be to play to her own strengths and not worry about what somebody else might do.

With the triple axel, though, she clearly will be formidable over the next few years. I think that barring injury, the rivalry between these two will be pretty interesting over the next few years.
It's kinda funny, cuz the 1st time I saw her, I thought,"AH, "technically superior" just like Tara was!"

Her Jr. Worlds LP this year was the worst all year, yes, everyone has a bad day, but there were so many reports of her tarining for 2 3axles and a quad before Worlds. I hope she improves her FW and gets a program that's not so cutesy.

I know if I was at that level, I'd be sitting in the stands seeing what my peers can do! I doubt I'd be all like giggly and clapping, but I would be taking note of what they do well and what their weaknesses are. Nothing wrong with that. I recall way back in 1994, seeing a clip of a young Michelle is awe of Tonya Harding practicing a 3loop. Fast forward to 1998 and seeing NNN and Sasha, holding hands, looking amazed while watching Michelle at Nationals. Something tells me, once a skater competed against the very person they admired, their attitude changed from "WOW!" to "I can compete with her!" to "I CAN beat her." There was a whole thing how Nicks had to take NNN aside and explain to her she belongs on the same ice as Michelle and to stop idolizing her, think of her as a competitor. Something similar happened with Sarah, and also Kimmie at her 1st Sr. Nationals.
Now, to get back on topic...I'm sure Kimmie was thrilled to win Worlds, beating the reinging Nat. Champ and is looking forward to competing as one of the best next fall. Evident by her serious look as she watched the Ladies SP, I doubt she's in awe of anyone anymore, but is very determined to beat them! That doesn't mean she can't be the sweetest, innocent kid she's portrayed as off the ice.
IMO, the things that say volumes about a skater are things like Kimmie's staying to sign autographs, when others (including Emily) fled, or, Michelle's handling her Oly disappointments, not the way they "look" at their competitors. Kimmie sounds to me like she has a good head on her shoulders, which I think "will stand her in good stead" to use a Button-ism.

When a thread changes to a totally different subject, I just wonder why the person who began the change didn't just start a new thread? Please explain.
I understand the need for something to say about favorites of Kwan and Cohen but it is about figure skating and there are many skaters involved. Personally, I think Kwan/Cohen days are numbered, but that is another thread.
If staring is an important issue even in the summer, then start a thread on staring, and let the members discuss whatever the topic was first presented. It's a lot like, who had the pinkest dress in last year's competition.
